By the way this show is in VASTLY superior quality on Disney+ than it is on Hulu (at least that is what my American friend told me who was watching it on Hulu at first). The story is roughly based on real historical events but all of the names are changed, some changed a bit (which is probably why Toranaga sounds familiar, won't say more than that), some a lot. Couple other details: Blackthorne is English but the ship is Dutch (Erasmus was a Dutch philosopher). With the exception of when the crew of the Erasmus is speaking to each other (which is Dutch), spoken English in the show is actually Portuguese. I saw some people get confused by this because the subtitles can be inconsistent in saying which language they are speaking.

James Clavell wrote Shogun in 1975 which is an engrossing read. His first book was King Rat, followed by Tai-Pan, then came Shogun followed by Noble House, Whirlwind and Gai-Jin. All of which are brilliant stories all set in the Japans.

Just a clarification, Toranaga doesn't have a claim to the Imperial Throne. What he's after is the Shogunate, which is basically the equivalent of a military dictator. The Emperor was a ceremonial figurehead at this point. Shogun translates to "Barbarian Suppressing General" or something along those lines. It's been over 30 years since I read the novel.

Characters are: In Japan, your family name comes before your given name John Blackthorne, English pilot on a Dutch privateer. Toranaga, council member and Lord of Foreign Affairs Ishido, leader of the council and rival to Toranaga Yabushige (Kasigi Yabu) opportunistic ally to Toranaga Omi, Yabushige's nephew and master of the village of Ajiro Kiku, the best courtesan near Ajiro Toda Hiromatsu, Toranaga's right-hand man Toda Mariko, daughter in law of Hiromatsu, and christian Vasco Rodriguez, Spanish ship pilot Dayoin, nun, and wife of the late Taiko Yaechio, the Taiko's heir Lady Ochiba, Yaechio's mother, currently not a hostage at Toranaga's castle.

09:24 Shogun is a temporary position in the imperial court called Seii Taishogun. The Seii Taishogun was originally the commander-in-chief of the army that was formed to subjugate the EZO (a powerful clan in Hokkaido), an ethnic group in the northeast region who did not submit to and were in conflict with the Yamato Imperial Court(currently the japan imperial family). From 1185 onwards, samurai families (a general term for families with military-related government positions in Japan) were appointed by the imperial court, held military power, and held real political power.

🌸⛩ I really hope you guys will also do the the 1980 mini-series. The two shows feel quite different, which would make an interesting comparison and the original was excellent. After seeing the first 4 episodes of this one and re-watching the original adaptation, I think the new version just isn't as impressive as the old one, which: - didn't use constant dark & gloom to hide a bunch ofI and choppy editing - was beautifully filmed on location in Japan, including Osaka Castle - used full-scale Japanese and European ships (the Erasmus was actually sailed to Japan before filming started) - used authentic sets and costumes hand constructed with traditional methods, including an entire fishing village - had a largely Japanese cast speaking Japanese dialogue with no subtitles, putting the viewer in the place of the foreigner Blackthorne - had a wonderful Mariko (Yoko Shimada) who moved and spoke like a traditional Japanese woman, not a bitchy 21st century girl. Best thing in the show IMO. - had a Blackthorne who didn't resemble a block of wood - had a great performance by John Rhys Davies as Rodrigo. - had a remaining cast every one of whom was memorable and well acted, even the small roles 🌸⛩ On the other hand, I've always wished to see more of the Japanese politics from the novel, so there's that, and I have no complaints about Sanada as Toranaga. Also, the new costuming is very elaborate and pretty, even though it feels a but too modern Hollywood - reminds me of current superhero outfits with all the textured materials. Maybe I'm wrong about that. But where are the orange robes the Jesuits should be wearing?

I first read Shogun 42 years ago, when I was on holiday, a few months before my 10th birthday... 😂 I spent almost that entire holiday sitting on the beach with a book as big as my head...! Needless to say, I struggled with ideas like navigation rutters, and imagined them as maps, but I was captivated with the story and have reread it so many times. Game of Thrones isn't a terrible modern comparison, but maybe it's more like House of Cards?

FYI: Blackthorn speaks English only to his crew, after that EVERY TIME you hear English being spoken it is supposed to be Portuguese. This show is a remake of a TV mini series from the 80`s.

MVP of the series, I can already tell you, the Spaniard. if you have a grumpy Spaniard in your cast who's always pissed off at life for whatever reason, you know he's a solid bro.

Ishido can't actually become shogun, he doesn't have the bloodline for it. Also, he wasn't really wrong. Toranaga IS suddenly building up his power through marriages and other means, which is pretty suspicious in their eyes.

IRL, Yoshii Toranaga is Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shogun. Ishido is Ishida Mitsunari. Most of the characters are based on real people.

I've seen the original at least 40 times since 1980.

Ooops, got my comment deleted, must have been about the bucket! It's just to ritually clean his sword before he does The Thing I Can't Say. I loved the rope joke, didn't see it myself, but yeah, it's got to be on purpose. Try watching episodes 1-5 of Sengoku Jidai by Extra Credits, it'll give you some of the historical context.

In the 1980 mini-series John Rhys-Davies (Gimli from LOTR) played Rodrigues, I like him in the role better than this new guy, but overall this new series is spectacular.
