This also tracks with Toranaga's flaw of him refusing to trust anyone with his plans, even his own son. This stubborn nature of keeping his plans secret to himself led his son to be reckless and get himself killed. Toranaga is a tactician, a specialist in political, social and military affairs , this episode showed how long or old he has survived in this lifestyle and won and survived battles, he has a plan and he is always two steps ahead of anyone, he fooled the council when he left and revoked his position, and he sees the value in the barbarian everyone wants to kill already. There is no way he is surrendering.

When a warrior takes the head of his opponent after a battle, he does so to show his lord what deeds of valour he has performed. If he took the head of a samurai of high rank, he would show his head as proof and receive a reward to match his deeds. The heads of lower-ranking samurai were not taken as they were not eligible for rewards. It was necessary to verify the identity of the dead person. A warlord who loses a battle commits seppuku, thereby asking the victor to forgive his men. He took responsibility and in many cases his men were forgiven and survived.

Toranaga did everything he could to try and get through to him but he kid just kept learning all the wrong lessons. He gets led into a brazen assassination of a messenger on someone else's leash, and while this ends up serving Toranaga's needs, he tries to emphasize for Nagakado how foolish it is to be manipulated by others. He tries to teach him this repeatedly with his birds and otherwise. To teach him patience, awareness, and strategic caution. Instead, the lesson that Nagakado learns is, bafflingly, that he needs to be braver and more assertive. He suffers the consequences of learning that very wrongheaded lesson.

The thing I really can’t get over once I heard it in another video is the subtle power of translation and it’s role in the storytelling For example Mariko is given both power and burden in her translations, so often she’s tweaking people’s words on the fly to almost imbue ever so slightly different meaning or changing things slightly to be more palatable either for the social standing, the situation or to diffuse potential confrontation. It’s really fascinating, I think at face value you sort of think she’s giving a true translation and there’s one or two changed words but those extra words here or there can change the entire meaning, have a different impact and can change the intent behind the original words, it sort of goes back to Blackthorne getting the hard lesson on the weight of words.

Guys, I have a theory: If you go back to episode 6, near the end, when Mariko goes back to Toranaga’s tent to report on how Blackthorne’s night at the Tea House went, at the beginning of that scene, you’ll see Toranaga folding up a paper and throwing it into the fire in front of him. Whenever he’s about to make crucial war decisions, you always see him receiving or sending messages through his spies. I think the message we were not allowed to see on that paper MUST be related to the Crimson plan he has unfolding. It is also not a surprise then when we see his go-to SPY guy in episode 7 when his half brother is being welcomed into the village by the villagers. They focus in on him, which I think is subtly telling us “remember the role of Toranaga’s spies in relation to who you are seeing on screen.” If this is all true, this would make Shogun one of the smartest shows on television because they really plant seeds and expect their audience to be smart enough to connect the dots because nothing is “filler” or used to kill time on each episode. What do you guys think?? Let me know.
@paragonpiper4081
@paragonpiper4081 3 месяца назад
Yes. She knows. I’m thinking when Toranaga was away a few episodes back, he had visited his brother, and this is all a part of his plan to get into Osaka. Fighting from within. This has to flip. Toranaga is far too smart to have fallen into this trap. But his dim witted son again acted rashly, and paid for it. I think in a way, his uncle had warned him, while still playing his part.

Watching this ep with you again i came to the conclusion that if Toranaga-sama has a plan it may include the only wild card nobody expect and that leave the picture with that display of disrespectfulness by the Anjin. After his plead and loyalty maybe during that night Toranaga-sama gave him a purpose and he was at the beach watching the boats, maybe supervising something? idk, thats my guess/conclusion. Great Reaction and vid!

I loved the two moments (which were not included in this reaction video) ''Kashigi Yabu'' (my favorite character, performed by the great Tadanobu Asano), when he's showing up at the hot spring, and when ''Toranaga'' surrenders, he was one of the few men that stood up to disagree by his decision (of course I know his reasons, but still).....Greetings from The Netherlands.

CinePals, We all know that Lord Toronaga only moves when he has to. The death of his son has brought him more time before setting out for Ishido. Then he might decide to only go very slowly and drag the march out longer. He also now knows that his brothers castle and lands are not protected like they should be and are open to "Bandit" attacks. Do we really beleave that Toranaga did'nt know a big army was approaching? Cheers, Chris Perry.

One thought-- by giving in, Toranaga has bought time. An immediate refusal would have meant instant battle with his brother's forces. And don't think that the army Toranaga has with him is the sum total of his followers. What might the other other forces be preparing?? We have three hours left to see.

For the record, I think I read somewhere that the difference between harakiri and seppuku is harakiri you alone, you slit your stomach and die slower, and seppuku is more ritualistic as well as having a "second" there to end the pain by cutting off the head. In other words harakiri is more like suicide as we know it and seppuku is an honor bestowed rather than an order given. If that makes sense.

Izu is Yabushiges land, and Toronaga's always been mentioned as "lord of Kanto". Also in the will that Toronaga had written in this episode shows that he is allocating his land to his grandchildren when they come of age which likely means his land was not part of whatever was offered to Saeki.

Can't figure out if the guy playing Toranaga's son is a bad actor or a genius level actor. There's a level of sophistication in acting that everyone, even background characters, seem to have. The way Toranaga's son speaks to his dad, holds his sword, delivers his lines seems very amateurish, but I'd also believe a greenhorn buffoon character like him would behave and speak that way lool

Toranaga has some sort of plan up his sleeve. It’s not like him to be caught by surprise by his brother’s betrayal. As the madam observed he could have seen his brother’s army move to cut him off with only one spy. And Toranaga even had a spy planted at this formerly unimportant fishing village. Wouldn’t he Also have a spy to tell him what his brother was up to? I think he’s acting like he’s defeated to lull his enemies into thinking they’ve won. Maybe he’s made asecret alliance with the Christian regents (the priest was saying they should make Toranaga an ally. Obviously he hasn’t told his vassals (or his son) about whatever plan he has but I’m sure he has a plan.

Then, probably, ishido who is waiting for them not realizing that what comes their way is a marching warriors of Torunagas battle with him. Haha. Toranaga wants to be Shogun but he has lived in the era of warring Daimyos, the era of Nobunaga crushing everyone and creating festering resentments, the Taiko's takeover and endless attempts to take over Korea and hopefully China. He doesn't want to return to the chaos of all against all, or the fear of everyone the last two overlords went through. I don't see him as afraid of war but he doesn't want wars that resolve nothing rather only create fodder for future conflict. That's his sensitivity to Blackthorne's requests. He knows Blackthorne wants to go after the Portuguese but while he too wants the Portuguese influence curtailed in Japan, Toranaga doesn't want it at the cost of war or conflict with Portugal and Spain. Blackthorne doesn't get that part of Toranaga's attitude toward the Portuguese. I don't think knowing about that first battle and its conclusion would have changed the son's actions. He was obsessed with living up to his father who he thought was god's own Samurai/Daimyo. If he learned the truth it most likely would have been spun in his head that killing the uncle would let him stand equal with dad. The kid would have been in even deeper crap had he done it since he would have murdered one of the regents. Toranaga would have had to slap him silly and tell the kid to put his own head in the box. I suspect everyone has forgotten the deal making Toranaga did on the black ship with the priests. Why would those Christian regents vote Toranaga's brother to the regency? Does that make sense given how much they hated him? Even if Toranaga is killed, the brother takes over those lands and vassals and the regents would have a new Minowara threat on their hands who is even more rich and armed.

There was one thing that stuck with me in my Asian Civ course regarding Seppuku and being the second. I was reminded of it here and I apologize for the detail but the thing that stuck out was how specific it had to be when you perform the beheading. Ideally to be a good second you wouldn't behead the person committing seppuku completely, it would leave just enough attached in front for the head to fall forward and stay attached. It would be held against the second if they made mistakes during this process, so as a result not many people would actually be willing to be a second back then.
