@@johngoldsworthy7135 I don’t think that this is the case. What Ohtani did, made current and past players look greedy and selfish. Ohtani did a selfless act. That sets him apart from the American players. American players fear that the status quo, will be threatened by Ohtani’s act.

He will get boo'ed because he's a Dodger now. The Dodgers fans boo'ed him when he played in LA as an Angel. It's what fans do. Shohei won't care IMO because he understands that's part of the sport.

When has Shohei ever said he "wants" to be the face of baseball, like AJ puts it? Only thing I've heard from him is he wants to win and thanking the fans/city for support. Wasn't AJ hung up on Shohei not speaking English during press conferences? I wonder if he feels the same way about 600+ Americans who played in Japan who can't speak a lick of Japanese. Should they have learned enough Japanese to converse to reporters? - WW

And remember shohei bet on himself. He took a less contract as a rookie to be a two-way player. And I give the angels credit for letting him do it. If you think about it, the huge stars like Michael Jordan, for example, he was not approachable when he played Even to this day he still isn’t He’s an icon. Shohei will rise to that same level. When Shohei was in the homer Derby, I believe at that point he was making two to $3 million per year ( with no deferred 675 million at the end haha ). he donated the monies that he got paid for doing that to the staff for the Angels He’s a standup guy he’s not getting in trouble just like Jordan didn’t

@JeremyDale216
@JeremyDale216 9 месяцев назад
Nah. He was “projected” to receive $50M+ a year as a 2-way player, even though he’s not going to be pitching. $68M in 10 years has a real money value of $52M a year today. If the Dodgers put $26M in an S&P mutual fund every year for the next decade, can you guess how much money they’ll have in the fund a decade from now? Yup. You guessed it. $68M. Sooo… Esentially, Shohei said, “put 26mil in a mutual fund to pay me later, and use the the other 26 to sign Yoshimodu.” The Dodgers get 2 players for the same price as 2 players. Good for them. Good for Shohei. I don’t think it breaks baseball. Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Kershaw doesn’t “break baseball” any more than Maddux, Glavine & Smoltz broke baseball.

Totally agree with AJP. There's nothing crooked or dishonest about the contract. He's giving the Dodgers 10 years in exchange for payment on a schedule that benefits the team. That's all it is--a unique payment schedule for a unique player that works around the luxury tax. The luxury tax isn't a moral imperative, it's just a rule for how baseball teams operate. If MLB thinks deferments like this contribute to disparity, then they need to adjust the rules. You'll have to show me why deferments contribute to disparity and then explain why I should care about that when some of the best teams have the lowest payroll.

@@WanderingWolf365 Of course his deferral helped the team in terms of salary space and luxury tax concerns. But if he gets hurt and can't play and they haven't secured an insurance policy because of his two surgeries, then they're SOL because, backloaded or not, the entire amount is guaranteed. What I'm saying is simply factual: endorsement money belongs to the player and his agent, not to the franchise. That it allowed Shohei to comfortably defer payments from the Dodgers is a consequential benefit.

if the dodgers were willing to pay $70M per year for the first 10 years, and if ohtani said he'll defer most of it, then ohtani basically took a $232M pay cut to keep the dodgers competitive. it's that simple. -$232M=($46.8M-$70M)x10=(AAV - salary without accounting for the time value of money) x number of years. on the other hand, if the $70M per year for the first 10 years was never on the table, all this is just optics. i.e. this is not really a $700M contract. it is essentially a $468M contract, and the dodgers are getting charged as a $468M contract. illustratrion: any team that can pay $468M over 10 years can do the same thing as the dodgers. they just need to save $44.8M (=AAV minus $2M) each year and put it in an interest bearing account. then after 10 years, they'll have $68M to pay their player each year. any player can do it as well - a player that gets signed $468M over 10 years can save $44.8M of the $46.8M each year, and 10 years later, the player will have an income stream of $68M per year. of course you need to adjust the math for taxes, but the same argument holds. overall, i think the $468M (or $700M) over 10 years seems fair for ohtani given his injury this year. i.e. ohtani is getting paid what we thought he would get paid, between $450M to $500M because of the injury.

I think he was just done with the angels(owners). What can you say when you are doing all this amazing stuff and the teams still lost. No offense to Angels, I think they were trying to build a team just didn't work out... kinda just got that vibe from him. He already had one foot out the door waiting for his free agency. Seems like he was ready for this fresh start. Like he can be that missing piece for an amazing team with 3 of the nicest superstars, mookie, freddie, will smith, and I think Jason Hayward is just a good example of club house leader. I don't get how anyone could hate those guys. Instead of 70M hitting the AAV and making their payroll 245 and over the 237 luxury tax threshold, its 46AAV and making their payroll only 221 and under it. I bet the CBT will be changed so the deferred money hits during their playing days. Small market teams should be furious.

One of the reasons why Ohtani chose the Dodgers over the Blue Jays is because of the broadcast time slot from Japan. The Dodgers on the West Coast will be broadcasting around 10 a.m., while the East Coast Blue Jays will be broadcast around 2 a.m. Japan time. In other words, Japanese people will not be able to watch live broadcasts of East Coast teams for the next 10 years. Otani wants Japanese people, especially children, to watch him play baseball live. That's why I first decided on the West Coast Angels.
