I stumbled across your channel because I am researching these bone conductor headphones. Brilliant - down to earth review. The fact that you ran all the way through too!! I struggle to get back to running but you’re inspirational. Great video and thankyou
I will miss the non-proprietary USB-C charge connection of my old Aftershokz Aeromove, but sadly they finally broke on me. I'll take a port cover over yet another single-purpose cable that I have to either buy extras of or can only charge at home or work. 🙄 I do hope these don't start saying "charge me!" every goddamn minute when they still have an hour of charge left! Who does that help?? It's also weird and not confidence inspiring that the Pro model is significantly LESS water resistant that the cheaper model. Am I going to kill these riding in the rain? 🤦♂️
I bought a budget-headset from eBay a few months and love them. The only down side is there is no base and also I cannot use it in public. Unfortunately you ear every being transmitted. So it would irritating to others. So I looking for one that does not share my private play list.
I have been using the power beats pro for a couple of years now. Well recommended. Not bone conduction but high quality and undercuts these for price if you shop around
If you keep some comfortable ear plugs handy you’ll find that wearing them with the headphones will give you that inner ear bud affect. Just pop in the ear plugs when it’s too noisy around you, like at the gym and then take them out when you want to hear your surroundings again. Works like a charm.
OR you could just wear earbuds and take one out if you need to hear something. Wear open headphones if you want open ones, wear inner earbuds if you don’t
The moment I saw this 'user' just 'chuckin' away the packaging!!!; I dont like that sort of disrespect; I refuse to watch any more. Don't like this sort of 'attitude' Good bye.
I love that they don't fall out of your ears. I'm in the building trade and buds always fall out into paint or water. I love my Shokz. If outside noise is a problem. Wears some ear plugs. The sound is 100% better.
@@kellyvalentine9567 Hey Kelly. I also have a 'Garmin Forerunner 245 music' watch, so i can download songs into my watch and pair my watch to the shocks headphones... which means that i don't need to run with my phone.
I have a pair since about half a year... I love them. Sound is pretty good. I mainly use them for running and cycling. I can still listen to audiobooks or music and hear traffic. In the gym I use airpods, as I like the noisecancelling - shutting out the crappy gym beats.
I used to want to block everything out at the gym, but I've been going to the same gym for several years now and I know a lot of people there, and so prefer to keep the opportunity to be social open. So these are great for that. The crappy gym beats are still there, but I don't really notice them when my own stuff is playing.
I was upset since like you, I had their Aeropex I want to say was the version number they used, and couldn't find it on their site and even trying to find their site due to their name change was hard to do. LUCKILY "OPEN RUN (regular)" is apparently the successor to the Aeropex. Which as a SUPER SWEATY BOY, kind of need that ip7 rating.
Not to be negative, but getting gifted the headphones is the same as being paid by Shokz. They have paid you in product. So thanks for the useful info, but it doesn’t actually count as “honest review”
Completely agree and love mine, I think you nailed it. Have seen some mixed reviews and wonder if bone conduction is as effective for everyone anatomy-wise. Only other negative I've had is they don't properly relay long presses to apps (such as the Overcast app for podcasts).
You have to find quiet roads to run on if you wear these. I have the cheaper version and music sound is less good on the low end of the frequency, which is to be expected, but still a good sound, for podcasts its perfect. For safety while you are running bone conducting is the way to go.
Honestly I think OpenPro does not worth the money compared with OpenRun, I mean audio quality is not so much better than and OpenRun has high level for protection for dust, water and impact
Thanks a bunch for your video! I made my Shokz purchase after watching your review and just completed my first run this morning with no issues at all. I was worried I would have issues since i run in the morning cold temps with a beanie/skull hat and wasn't sure if it would interfere and did not. I've used earbuds for the past several years and I sweat alot which somehow always made my skull cap tap buttons causing music to pause, skip to next song etc which was so frustrating. None of this at all with the Shokz this morning. Thanks again!
I would be curious to know how they work with clothes on the head, like hats, bands, etc. I find many of even high quality earbuds having this terrible design issue of being absolutely impossible to wear during winter because they tend to be pushed inside your ear.
That’s a really good point, I’ve not yet tried these ones with a headband (obviously too warm for that right now!) but found in the winter and using my old pair you have to angle them right and have the loop bit above the headband, otherwise the headband isn’t keeping your ears warm. Definitely less comfortable, maybe the big over the ear headphones are better in the winter?
I use the previous gen of these year round. They work fine with caps and glasses. For head bands or buffs in cold weather you have to angle them a bit. It probably looks a bit odd but it works fine. Nice to hear they improved sound quality in the latest version.
Yeah but I though that specs still mattered. I would like to know the difference in specs between these and Aeropex. I've heard that the older Aeropex model is better?
Gave you a thumbs up in the first minutes for your nice intro. Incorporating the device you're about to review vs. Some elaborate intro. Great production value, now on to the rest of your review.
I bought a pair about 6 months ago, I work in electrical. They are seriously awesome. Sound quality is not the greatest thing ever but better than you would expect, but I also normally use studio headphones at home. I use mine when on jobsites to keep aware and when working with another person, being able to hear what they are saying without turning off and on music or pulling earbuds out constantly is amazing.
Great reveiw Phily! I have the openrun non pro version and I completely agree with everything you said here. Bass isnt amazing on the non pro version so not great for heavier music with lots of bass. but spot on for everything else (in non busy or loud enviroments). Think these pro ones improve the bass problem a bit though. 👍
@@HWYHOG1 Shokz are saying that its one of the main features of the new openrun pro that they have enhanced bass. I havent tried them so can't compare and Phily hasn't used the non pro version so can't compare. Would be interesting to see who has used both and what they say.
Bass is indeed better, but that's because they "cheat". These are combo bone conduction/speaker headphones. The OpenRuns (I own three, went through five of the original Aeropex versions), because the transducers would keep coming loose or stop working). Regardless, the bass sounds better because the Pros use speakers, while the OpenRuns/Aeropex/Trekz Air (also own a few) are solely bone conducting. The trade-offs are the OpenRuns/Aeropex/Trekz Air series sound GREAT when you use ear plugs, while the Pros sound HORRIBLE. Why does that matter? After a long day of biking or exercising, and hitting that mass transit home from the gym/work/etc, one cannot simply tune out the external noises with ear plugs.
My sister got these and called me while wearing them and they were super clear. I couldn’t tell she was using them. I use the AirPod pros and they aren’t that clear on the phone. Came here to see if I should order some. Great review. Thanks.
Wait, say WHAT?! You can use them in media production too?!?!? I think a whole bunch of us have rewound that part at 00:08:03 which I think is a GAMECHANGER in itself! I just got mine yesterday and I just fell a whole level deeper in love with them when I heard you say that!
I suggest NOT getting the old models. They tend to break soon after warranty. I had two - one developed rattle on one side, on the second pair the rubber just delaminated from sweat.
I'm thinking about getting these headphones, but I have a conch piercing, and I tried them in store it kept hitting my conch (I mean they also have those cords on them to stop them from being stolen so i couldn't fit them perfect), I wonder if anyone has had experience with this?
I'm definitely not interested in hearing the noise around me when I put earphones on lol... Also would prefer sound quality over hearing the noise around me lol.. I'm not sure what the point of this device is if it degrades the point of private listening..
I think it would be good for driving and doing skiing for tracking danger traffic. Also i feel comfortable when wear during sleep time > You don't feel anything stuffing in your earnail.
Anyone have any experience using these with Garmin Fenix 7 running/ training audio prompts without your phone? I’ve found my old aftershokz to be useless in this scenario
I was on the fence about these but you've convinced me. I am typically by myself and run with one airpod in so that I can hear what's happening around me. These just might be the solution. Thank you!
I've got the aftershocks aeropex they sound fine and will last 14 hours straight on a single charge - - openrun pro they do sound slightly better especially the bass they are just too expensive
I got tired of having to say "Huh?" every time my wife said something on our runs/walks. So I tried the Open Run pros and they are about what I expected. Decent sound quality through the mid and high range, but lacking bass. They are supposed to have better bass than the non-pro version, so they must have about zero bass. A friend at work has a different brand of bone conduction, and he said my Shokz sound great. So they must work better than other brands. They don't sound anywhere close to the quality of my Bose, but they don't isolate me from the world like the Bose. I'd say they fit in where they are intended to: Decent sound that won't fall out and lets you hear what's going on around you.
hi, it seems that with my OpenRun Pro Mini, the "digital assistant" function triggers on my iPhone, but the mic on the OpenRun Pro Mini doesn't work with Siri.. it only works with the mic on my iPhone..
Some how I can not connect to my iPhone or iPad I try all the recommendation still no go. But one thing I could connect to other phone but not mine any idea .
Openrun Pro is my previous models, and I am currently using Wissonly Hi Runner. To be honest, Openrun Pro works very well, but it doesn't have MP3 mode. I don't like running with my phone, MP3 mode is important for me, and its waterproof grade is not high enough to be used while swimming. Therefore, I switched to Wissonly Hi Runner this year.
I would say that their biggest downside is that they can't get very loud, so they don't work well in loud environments, or if you are hard of hearing. But aside from that, they are pretty great. (I have the standard OpenRun version, and now so does my wife as she kept borrowing mine!)
Been using these for about four weeks and they are shite! Too quiet which means you have to use them on full volume which means you will get about 3 hours max battery and they WILL let you down on a run like they have me already! NOT WORTH THE HIGH PRICE TAG! That’s an honest review from me!!
Have you figured out how to play the audio through them from PC? My phone + spotify works great but Windows 10 - although it recognizes it as a bluetooth device and adds it... it doesn't recognize it as an audio device... so no sound...
On the comment about gym useage, my old Aftershokz came with ear plugs so you can hear just the music and block out background noise. Pretty effective and simple. Great review though, my Aeropex battery has died so looking to upgrade somewhere!
In fact, I am delighted with this very lightweight audio headset, incredibly comfortable, with sound quality that is sufficient, and moreover, it performs much better than far more sophisticated products for making phone calls. It even works well for WhatsApp calls, which is not always the case with other headsets. I am much more critical regarding the non-standard charger, which is truly bothersome. In fact, unlike most other headsets, if we forget the charging cable, we cannot replace it with a standard USB cable that we can find everywhere... we have to store the headset and wait until we return to charge it.
Question - there was no issue with the fit regarding getting the standard size vs the mini? My head measures in at the size for the mini but I want the Blue color you have! Just wondering about the fit, since your head looks close to my size XD
I sweat A LOT when I work out or run. Like, very excessive. Haven’t seen anyone who sweats as much as I do. So should I get regular Open Run since it is quite waterproof, whereas the Pro only provides a moderate level of dust and water resistance? I want the hard case tho :(
Open Run with the IP7 rating…Totally AMAZING. I know people that shower with them. I live in Florida, they are drenched with sweat after my run, and I am out there for hours. I wash them under the sink when I get home. OPEN RUN ALLLLLL THE WAY!!!!!!!
