In this video I compare the two most popular types of umbrellas, shoot through and reflective umbrella. Shoot through umbrellas are translucent which allows the light to pass. They give you more wrap around light in your portraits. With reflective umbrella, it's still wrap around light BUT it becomes a bit directional and may cast a little bit of shadow compared to shoot through.
Which umbrella should you choose? Well, they are so cheap that everyone who does studio portraits or outdoor strobist photography should simply own both.
Equipment used in the video.
DSLR: Nikon D3s and Nikon D700
Lens: Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VRII and Nikon 50mm 1.8G AFS lens
Umbrellas - Lastolite trifold umbrella and cowboy studio reflective umbrella

thank you for educating us about photography. YOu're the best teacher here on youtube to be honest. others (i wont mention usernames) but they are too technical on explaining things. You teach from the heart. keep it up PhotographersOnUTube!

Thanks for the comparison. I was dealing with a lot of light pollution with my shoot throughs. Now that I can see that reflective should get me better contrast, I can't wait till I get my new umbrellas in.

This was a highly informative video. I have been researching what type of umbrella I may begin with and this video was very educational. I appreciate the time you put into this.

Hi, thanks for the comparison. Yes, I guessed it correctly. Did you measure the exposure for each shot separately? To me it looks like the two shots weren't exposed exactly the same.

Thanks so much for this information on reflective vs. shoot through umbrellas. It was extremely helpful to see the photos and compare the techniques. Now I am getting an understanding of what to buy as a first time umbrella buyer. It was very excellent information.

Yay! I guessed correctly! I'm excited because when it comes to shooting with speed lights & light modifiers (which I do not own yet), I'm a total newbie. That's why I appreciate these videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them for us! I'd like to see more speed light vids; I'm not stupid, just ignorant. For some reason, speed lights intimidate me. : / Cheers!

I saw the picture on the right was the shoot through umbrella, there is more lite in the background of the image then there is on the reflective umbrella, nice video, perfect details.

Would have been nice if you had measured the exposure so both photo's would have been lit the same. What you are explaining as more contrast is actually just a stop difference in light.

ps Try to ignore the angry people. It's them, not you! If you can, embrace all of the positive feedback. That's what's important. Thanks again for helping us all out by teaching us things we may not already know. Take care...

Thanks Jibran. Directional light is contrasty and create more shadows that diffuse light.. good physics concept. I've been reading a lot about the light and lighting.. it's interesting..but i need to put them in practice! I think i'd go with the 2 in 1 umbrella set up. What would you advice on backdrops? Thanks

Thanks Jibran. Yes for me the reflective umbrella works better for me since im going more twards off camera flash. Also using a cowboy studio flash trigger tops it all off im getting great results now after watching some of your videos on strobist photography, I do have a question ??? am I supposed to meter the background, or the subject ??? im getting some mixed reviews,,, mabey on your next video you can add that part in for us ROOKIES ... Keep up the great work.

I'm a big fan of yours love your videos .. I have a question ? Q-Flashes.... I don't see so many reviews on them.. I"m a event and Portrait shooter.. I"m planning to shoot weddings soon.. My camera body is a canon 5D mark 2 full frame .. I currently own 3 Canon 600 Ex Rt"s .. I don't think that's enough power to light up my group shots , church settings , and sometimes over power the sun ... Should I upgrade to the Q-flash Trios , Qflash t5DRs ??

Im right there with you on using my camera on manual mode, the only time i go into aperture priority mode to get a meter is when im indoors, im having a bad time learning how to shoot indoors since i do all my shooting outdoors, but i wont give up and im almost there.

Backdrops are for the indoor stuff for kids etc. there is a bit of a demand for it in here.. but i keep encouraging them to do outdoor shoots :) my next purchase would be a wireless trigger and the umbrella and stand.

Good video but audio hurts the content, obviously a mic clipped to the narrator's shirt collar on the right side drops off in sound volume when narrator is looking straight ahead or even to the narrator's left makes it inaudible. Time to get a boom microphone stand and place the mic overhead for better sound clarity and delivery of the message.
