In this video I talk about focusing in portraits. You should be focusing on the eye when you take a portrait but sometimes people are not sure which eye to focus on. I cover key points in this Portrait Tutorial that will teach you where to focus. This will also prepare you for when I do Group Shot Tutorial in the near future.
Equipment Used:
DSLR: Nikon D70s, Nikon D7000 and Nikon D3s
Lenses: 50mm 1.8G Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII and Nikon 24-70 2.8

Your videos are THE BEST. I am totally hooked. I have a nikon D5000 with a kit lens and 18 - 200 zoom lens. Do you think I can get better results with a 50mm prime lens ? My photos are not always that sharp. What is your view on the D5000 ? Your help is so much appreciated. Thanks so much ! :)

Hey I can't tell you how much your videos have helped me improve my shots. I was wondering which settings you would recommend on a Nikon D90 for an event photography where lights is ever changing and subjects moving lots please? Also, any chance that you will be doing group photography tutorial? Thanks a lot!

Thank you so much for your videos. Don't you think aperture is the key element behind sharpness besides the AF point positioning? warmest regards,

I agree to ur views, except on that of the last foto of the best man speech. I strongly believe that here the bride is the most important person in the entire event,and the focus should be on her. Because u r a pro, and I believe that u were using a prime lens, it really deosn't matter; u end up freezing a perfectly focussed moment. Big fan of your preachings. keep up the good work. ciao......

I have a 35 1.8. Would it be better to use the 18-105 zoomed in to 50mm to avoid the difraction you spoke of in one of your posts? Would this be the same as using an 85mm on a full frame?

Nice tutorial but I would like to know how do you actually focus on that certain spot. Do you do it on the spot? Or already set up?

Considering these pics and focus plane, have you shoot them all on f2.8? If it was 5.6 or higher then focus point would play insignificant role...Unless its wide aperture focus plane wont be that important. Saying this do u shoot weddings/parties where bunch of people are involved do u continue to take it on 2.8 and calculate on focus point continously during the event?

Nice tut, maybe a stupid question( just a beginner of photography) why not raising your f stop/apperture, to get more sharpness?
@apiitg

should we redefine to rule to "focus on ur subject"? this is what i get from this video.

what if its a group of people... what do u focus on then? Also what if you want something on the left and right of the page in focus and the back round in blur... For example.. a a mom and a dad with twin babies and there each holding out one child on there fore arm.

I always have a hard time with this. Im trying to take a picture of my parents holding my niece. I want both of them to be in focus. My niece is about chest high. How do I get both of them in focus? Where do I put the focus point on? Thanks

Is there anyway to get everything in focus?......suppose you have a person and some kind of monument behind him/her and you want both of them focused.

I wonder why is it important to focus on the eye?? Other phototgrapher say that its wrong to focusing on the eye and insted focusing on the nose so both eyes get in fous when they stand straigth like the first picture you show.
