Shooter On Campus: Know You Can Survive

If I'm running from the shooter my school will be like no running in the halls

my school is so stupid, we all are supposed to huddle inside a classroom in a corner... if the shooter enters they would have one easy target

At our school, we hide. If I hear shots down the hall, I open the window and run, not giving 2 cares about what my teacher says.

Some tips: - If a shooter is nearby, or you think they are, always choose to turn the lights off, it will make you a harder target for the shooter to get to you or to aim. (If possible, think of a plan while taking action, it may be hard to do so, but trust me planning is crucial in the situation, so that things like ‘dead ends’ or ‘don’t know what do next’ don’t hit you by surprise). Only run if you feel that it is safe to do so, if you want, you can take someone or even 2 people along with you, however NEVER travel in crowds above 5 people, it will only make it harder to escape and an easier target for the terrorist. Preferably, stick with 2-3 people (including yourself). This may be selfish, but try to persuade your company (if your only in a group of 2) to go first, and if your in a group of 3, try going second, so that someone is guarding you from both the back and front. To make it a bit fair, try taking turns going first and last, but if you know that a shooter is likely to be in an area, RESIST going first, but if you truly are a selfless one, go first and then run for cover ASAP. So that your chances of surviving are higher, since the shooter might not see you. In case you cannot run, hide. If you feel that it’s not safe to run to another area, stay where you are, make the most out of the place, even if it’s not much. Look for heavy objects to block the door from opening, or to use as a weapon….anything will do in this matter. But do this all quietly and if possible, quickly so that you get things done faster and you don’t give away your location. Silent any gadgets to avoid unexpected noises or phone-calls. Tell your buddies and people around you to do the same, for their safety and yours. If worse comes to worse and the shooter gains entry to your area, you have 2 options. The first one you have is to RUN to another area if the room your in has access to other rooms or is a hallway, but always know where your going, never go down paths that look sketchy. If you don’t have the option, or you simply feel uncomfortable with it, you have another one. DEFEND yourself and others (if possible) but of course this is your last resort if you absolutely have to confront the shooter, this may put your life at stake but it’s better than doing nothing and leaving yourself and others a 0% chance of survival, while hiding, call the police but don’t put it on speaker, it’ll attract the shooter. Always state your location first and then the precious and valuable info so that if anything cuts the call, they’ll know where to go. Remember, you only have to fight until the police arrive. If you manage to disarm the attacker, NEVER EVER pick up the weapon or use it, it’ll make it look like that YOU are the shooter, and you don’t want that to happen. If possible, whenever you hear the shooter coming your way, and you have limited protection, try looking for a window, it may be a risky way out but chances are, you’ll survive the fall, however, this is a no-go if you are higher than the 4th or 5th floor. Try landing into a garbage dumpster, it’ll lighten your fall and prevent serious injuries. Weapons to use can include fire extinguishers, a mop, even a pillow or book. In case you don’t have anything that will hold the shooter off for as long as the police arrive, at least get you something to buy you some time, it’ll give you the chance to run out of the room and hide or even escape to somewhere else. You may even step on the attacker’s feet or scratch them with your nails, go for the face, it’ll hurt the most. You can even use your jacket as a weapon, by swinging it around. Hopefully, you won’t have to deal with this situation, but if you do, at least you’ll know something. Stay safe! And thanks for reading :)

At my school we have active shooter drills or code reds where we hide in a corner with the lights off. I find this “strategy” to be useless because the shooter knows that the students hide in their classrooms and would most likely do anything to get in. Instead of hiding we should be escaping and have a planned escape route. Anyways the main problem is how the shooter easily got onto to school campus. We should be worried on how to prevent this from happening in the first place before we start doing all these drills. Like at my school they sometimes check if you have an ID around your neck and just let you go into the school. Most times the gate is left open while unattended all day and anybody could walk in. What I’m trying to say is prevent the problem first before trying to save yourself from it.

The key in situations like this is to just survive, if you're too afraid to fight it's not dishonorable to flee in situations involving an active shooter, but if you do have the will make sure to play it smart, stay out of sight and flank, keep flanking till you can get a hand on the barrel or slide of the weapon and give every cheap shot in the book as you can to get said weapon, if you have to kick a guy in the balls, do it, follow through with a throat punch and another kick to the groin, stab a dude in the eye with a spork, do what it takes to win. Remember, honor comes second to survival especially when you're already at a huge disadvantage of, well, you know, not having a gun.

We need to start teaching people how to identify a gunshot. A lot of these cases are people thinking it isn't a gun or its a joke. I think the problem with drills is that doing them so much students start thinking it's just another drill. When it's real. I remember for fire drills my school would let people know when the alarms were going to go off, because some students would get anxiety from the alarms going off. What they should do is get with the fire department and only the principle should know it's a drill and pull the alarm. So that they can see how teachers and students react if they think it's a real fire alarm. Also the drills should be done to not only show the main exit from the class rooms but also how to get to the secondary exit if the first one is blocked or can't get to it.

It’s idiotic how some schools don’t show us these videos, our school had us huddle in a corner and I was once piled on top of about 2 people, (in a fake drill obviously) a bullet could rip straight through my classmates and me, so much for a human shield. But all jokes aside these videos can be super informative instead of what some teachers tell us to do. The school I go to doesnt even remind us to barricade the door or fight back if the shooter enters, we just huddle in a corner where we can all be finished in about 3-4 bullets. Schools definitely need to show us these types of videos. I’ve been watching these now but I guess it isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Where I live, the local schools have call buttons/phones in each of the classrooms that can be used in all the different emergencies. Also my college is right next door to a state police station.

here's another thing, especially you're in a situation where you can't use our phone to call the authorities: if there's a fire alarm that you can pull/start, then do it. The sound will spook the shooter, possibly scaring them off. along with fire-fighters, ambulances also go to the location. sometimes hiding isn't the best solution. We have lockdown drills in our school, that simple ask us to hide in the corner, which can prove to be ineffective, as most shooters are already aware that children hide in classrooms.

my school has all of these heavy desks, and almost all of my classes has a door that is connected to the outside. I also have an extremely heavy metal water bottle, so even if i pray that i never will have to endure this, i will be prepared.

I'd have a suggestion for the government and this procedure overall, the gunmen can always impersonate an officer which would add deaths to the death count, of course not everyone would believe the gunmen, or even dare to open the door, even for an officer, however for those who do it's a game over. Each campus, School, etc, should have a separate police code for such incidences, this would be the 2FA of an active shooter situation, although this could probably be bypassed too, it should be that extra protection for schools.

**tips if ur in a classroom:** -if u r in the classroom and hear gun shots anywhere near ur classroom, don’t jump out of the window especially if there’s lots of ppl in ur class and ur at the top floor. The shooter can just walk in and see you guys jumping out and could possibly harm u during this. However, if ur at the bottom floor and there is a door that leads outside of the skl in ur class evacuate quickly and leave the school ground. -if u do not have that option, grab tables in ur classroom NOT the chairs and block the door. hide away from the door by hiding under the chair or behind it. Turn off the lights so the shooter doesn’t think any1 is in there, don’t forget to lock the doors if ur teacher has the keys. -if it is too late to do so and yk that the shooter is right near the classroom. Defend. put ur bag over ur stomach to protect u if the ^shooter tries to shoot, like a bullet proof vest. Grab chairs, anything in ur bag or in the classroom like books, pepper spray, tampons, perfume, and attack. Get the shooter on the ground, grab them but do NOT grab the gun first unless if it’s on the floor. DONT shoot either. Make sure the gun is not in their hand before getting them on the floor. Once it is get it away from them. -hit their head wity anything hard, spray their eyes, scratch them with ur nails,throw anything at them. -make sure all phones r silent too. **Tips if ur in the hallway:** -if there is any classroom nearby, even if it’s another year group run there IMMEDIATELY. it doesn’t matter. u can do the same thing like the tips above. -if u do not have that, think,Is there an exit nearby? Is there a janitors/cleaners closet nearby you can hide in? Is there a bathroom? Is there a windo I can jump from? -if u run out of the building call the police. -if u r on the stairs and hear gunshots, hear where the sound is coming from, if it’s coming from upstairs go downstairs, if it’s coming from downstairs go upstairs and find anywhere u can hide or leave. **Tips if ur in the bathroom** -you must think, is there a window I can jump from? you must check ur surroundings, if there is a window that can lead to the roof, open it if u can or try smash it with anything you have and climb out by getting on top of the toilet stall. -if you do not have that, do you know if ur lights r automatic (come on when someone is in the room), if so go to the end of one of the toilets stall and climb on top of it away from the lights and do not make a single noise or movement until it’s off. -if you have a water bottle, drop water on the floor, get water from the taps and drops water on the floor near the door. -check any resources in ur pocket or bag, if u have a pen or paper/posit note write “out of stock” nd put it on a toilet stall. Get in the toilet stall and hid ur feet, if u think u have time put it on the door outside of the toilet but DO NOT run out. **advice** always have a spare pen in ur pocket. -check if you can grab anything to lock or block the door, like ur belt, a mop, a broom? -once you know the shooter is out of sight call the police. I pray no one’s in a situation like this! x don’t just hide under the table with no blockage of the door! React fast!
