Shooting a Glenfield "Squirrel Stock" .22 the First Time 

In the video I incorrectly stated that the "JM" stamped barrel stood for Jim Marlin. I meant to say John Marlin, but it came out as it did, and I wanted to take the opportunity to correct myself.

I was 14 years old (41 yrs ago) when I went with Dad to a department store in Syracuse NY and he bought a Glenfield 60 with a squirrel stock brand new for, like, 70 dollars or so. I believe its the exact same as the one you show here. I did have to replace the recoil spring once because it had a kink in it and caused the gun to jam. Dad is gone now but the 60 stands in the center of the gun cabinet, spotless and ready to go.

Very good squirrel, your squirrel has a number of the details most are missing. If you just found it sitting in a pawn shop!! You won the squirrel lotto! Never let it get scratched up! Save that squirrel!

My mom set me up with credit at a jewelry store back before my father retired from the us navy. She set up a payment plan for $1,75 per week on a marlin model 60 that had a cash price of $23.00. I was 11 years old and cut grass making about $3.00 per week.the store told me when I made the last payment to get mom to come sign it out . The 1960s still seem so long ago.

I had no idea the Marlin had outsold the 10-22 ! I'm not surprised, however. I had one many years ago as a teenager. I won several matches with it, shooting in a youth league. No one told me it wasn't a target rifle! Thank you for bringing back the wonderful memories with that rifle. Great video sir!

My dad bought me one at 9 years old. I was so excited. It jamed up so much, my dad sold it and I kept shooting his Winchester 69A, which I ended up with. I gave it to my son when he turned 18. About 3 weeks ago at a local gun show I picked up a Winchester 67.

I love my model 60. My first rifle when I started hunting. My dad got it for me when I was 12 years old. Now I’m 42. Very accurate and can group them about a pea size at 50 yards.

The Marlin model 60 used to be very popular, when I was a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's. Many of my friends had them. I was torn on my 16 th birthday, when I was told I could get a 22 for my birthday. I was interested in the Marlin and the Winchester model 290. I decided on the Winchester. A really great 22, still have it 45 years later.

Those fantastic rifles were also sold under the westpoint brand name using the squirrel design birch stock. I received one on my 16th birthday and still shoot it today, 40 some years later.

Very nice! I picked one of those up at a pawn shop this year. I love it!! 1976 model.

My Marlin Model 60 was made in 1982 it has a 22-inch barrel.

The first gun I ever shot was a glenfield model 60 the day my dad bought it back in the 70s. He let me shoot it before he did. I think I was about three or four years old. That was a day I will never forget.

Another .22 Series! Not one, but two of what has probably been America's favorite .22 auto. I have only one - no squirrel. Like you, I fear the series is gone from us. I don't see Ruger resurrecting their 10-22's greatest sales competitor. Hope I'm wrong. Even more, I'd love to see a re-issue of the Model 39 - America's longest-lived. We appreciate your work, Sir!

I picked up an '81 Marlin "Squirrel Stock" Model 60 from an estate sale for $100. Best .22 rifle I've ever owned, and I'm partial to pump-action Winchester model 1906's (I have two vintage models). I was blown away by the accuracy and smooth cycling of the Model 60. It's my new squirrel / raccoon rifle for sure.

I own the Glenfield Marlin model 60 made in 1976. It will hold 18 rounds in the magazine tube but the bolt has to be closed when you load it. Just double check to make sure it is unloaded before loading with the bolt closed. Remember it also has a safety to use. Liked the video though, great job.

Great video as always. Love those model 60's. I only have one in my collection, unfortunately it belongs to my wife. Lol. I hope Ruger does start making them again. I graduated in '79 so we're not too far apart.

Tks for the video. I, too, have a Model 60 with the long barrel and magazine. Bought it new. I took it clear down and apart and cleaned it, it needed it, and tooth brushed the mechanicals with solvent, and of course lightly oiled it. It is a sweetheart. I treat the unmolested stock like it is fine walnut furniture like I do all of my guns. I also own another Marlin, a 39M (M for Mountie) that I bought new back in 1976 in Wellington, Kansas at a little gun shop. That does have a walnut stock and has a pretty grain to it. That microgroove rifling is for dadgum real, right after I bought it I was in farm country and from about fifty yards away, not a historical shot I know, but that rotten old fence post, about three inches in diameter, I saw it wiggle. I traipsed over there and darned if I had not hit it absolute dead center. I wanted a Marlin 39M because my cousin had been given one many years earlier, and I knew what they were and are. My first rifle was a Christmas gift, I was 12 at the time. A Remington 572 Fieldmaster. Yes, I still have it and treasure it.

Another great .22 review, Tom. I just remembered, I have one of the squirrel stocked Glenfields. It is currently residing in my son’s gun cabinet, I might have to reclaim it and give it a try. About two weeks ago I picked up my second Marlin 39A. This one was made in 1946 and is in remarkable shape for its age. I shot it last Saturday for the first time with open sights. It functioned flawlessly. It is drilled and tapped for a vintage Weaver N3 scope mount, which I luckily had one. It accepts a 3/4 inch scope, which I had a couple of those lying around as well. Undecided as to whether or not I will leave it with open sights or give that old scope a try. My other 39A was made in 1969 and has the Micro Groove rifling. The 1946 rifle has Ballard rifling. In recent years I have developed a new found appreciation for the older Marlins. Keep the .22 videos coming.

You can sure see why the 22LR is a squirrels worst nightmare. I just bought a pristine Glenfield Marlin model 60 from a buddy that's been sitting in his safe for over 45 years. Date code shows 1972. Paid 100 bucks, love the gun

Sure love your .22 videos! I have one of the "old 99c Marlin with the Walnut stock & 24" bbl, that will group WW solids with the best of them. Bought it new with hay baling money when I was age 13; ......I'm 70 now & hope my grandson(s) take good care of it ! Will never sell it ; & I have newer .22's that have to play catch-up on accuracy!!

I learned awhile back when one needs to tap the rear iron sight left or right it's hard to really tell if the sight moved. I found that by putting a pencil mark at the front sight point on the barrel that most barrel sights have, it gives one a reference point to determine if the sight moved and how much. It's simple and works very well. I enjoy your videos very much so ! Continue in the direction of God.

Congratulations on your finding such a nice rifle. You and the model 60 are good shooters. I'm going to check out a couple of local shops today, maybe I'll have some luck as you did.

After watching your video I finally figured out how to date a Model 60 I bought at a gun show. To my surprise it has a “J” for 1966, I’m blown away that it’s a year older than I am. After breaking it down its missing the retaining clips and the buffer was yellow and cracked. Order a softer trigger kit, now I’m waiting for a day to hit the range to see how it fires. Yup, a pity the Marlin lawyers had to shorten the magazine capacity (and barrel) of the model 60. I remember the old ones. Funny thing about Marlin. Why they called soooooo many rimfire rifles "Glenfield". I got a Papoose in 1991 and did find a keen used model 20 bolt gun in 2010 for under $80. It also had that funky squirrel/gopher imprint. It was a hefty sucker and had the Monte Carlo stock swell so boss for scope shootin'. Those Micro-groove barrels sure are accurate. My choice fodder was Armscor Precision .22 solids. I added a BSA S4X32WR optic for under $20. As they used to say in the old west..."there ain't nothin' wrong with beans that a good rifle won't cure". Cool video.

Great video, just getting into watching your channel. I graduated in ‘79… got my first Glenfield exactly like yours when I was about 15 or 16. Great little rifle, sold it to get a Rem. 552 Speedmaster. Killed a lot of squirrels with that Glenfield!

I recently picked up a 300 round box of the PowerPoints and MAN! They sucked! At least in my rifle. Smallest group I got was 2 3/4” at 30ish yards with the average groups being around 4”. I also had an average of 3 duds per magazine! (Ruger 25 rd mag) I shot maybe 1/4 of the box before giving them to the neighbor boys. They have more patients than I do for crappy rounds! LOL I told em they weren’t the best rounds but they were happy for em! They like to walk around the woods plinking at cans, pine cones, rocks, etc. and are just happy to have some ammo. They don’t have much money and are good kids. I’ll give em some ammo here and there and never ask of anything for it but I’ll wake up sometimes and see them across the yard raking up leaves or cleaning up fallen branches without being asked. I don’t mind keeping them stocked on .22 ammo when they are such good kids!

..dad gave me my first rifle..a Marlin 81c..bolt/tube 60 years ago, this past June...in 1963..the night I graduated from grammar school...

One of my grandson's upon his grandpa from his mother's side [assed away left him a Marlin model 60(his father ny son being a big fan of Marlin) so it's a family heirloom now one of our favorites.

I bought one of those for 20 bux off someone's wall that "did not work". Guy said it had been on the wall for 30 years. Took the stock off and there was a washer jammed in it. Dang fun rifle.

great info thanks! original stock on mine was broken when I found it but found the same squirrel stock on ebay for replacement. Serial number 19xxx indicates 1981 thanks for the translation.

I have two of em and they shoot great ..... after I watched your video and replaced the ejector/lifter springs in both. One of them threw a dime sized 5 shot group (25 yds) for me. Also have the Mod 20 with the groundhog. Only need the Model 30 to complete the set.

I bought mine in 1980 it was made in 1979 too. Same as yours for $49.95 at Kmart. Still have it. My Son shoots it now.

I have a few of these rifles and they have always been reliable. I prefer them over the Ruger 10/22 because I don't have to keep up with a magazine. I saw a new model 60 at academy sports the other day for about $160 I think. I am sure it's from the Remington line of marlins.

I found a Glenfield model 60 in a pawn shop a couple years ago. It was not in as good shape as yours. I bought it anyway and have had fun shooting it.

I've got a Glenfield mod 60. Probably a little older. No bluing left on the barrel or tube. Hand painted stock buck scene on one side turkey on the other. Found in an abandoned shack on the property somewhere and paid $75.00 to get it. Works just fine and will probably leave it as is for the rest of the time I own it!

I just bought that exact rifle myself and four weeks ago. I've only shot it for cycling and not accuracy just yet.

I would love to see a video on refinishing these old Glenfields. My grandfather gave me a single shot 30 years ago as my first rifle. I’d like to make it look like new again.

I have a Marlin M 989 m2 . Its a wonderful firearm.

You lucked out, mine looks like it was a truck gun, kept in the bed and taken off road in bad weather.

The Marlin mod. 60 was the first .22 rifle that I bought myself, and was one of the surprisingly more accurate .22 rifles I've owned .

My dad bought a squirrel glenfield at a Kmart in early 1980 and he gave it to my grandpa a long time ago. It's in really rough shape because the person my grandpa lent it to didn't take care of it. The stock is cracked all over, the magazine tube is busted, which makes taking the inner tube out and putting i back in a chore, and the whole thing was spray painted green. he's lending it back to us and I'm hoping to restore it to something that looks and runs good again.

As a teenager..back in time..i really loved 22 's.. And to this day...I still do.. Only thing that i wasnt fond of in a glenfield model was the birch stock with the cheap finish applied..i wish they would have used maple or walnut instead..but i realize cost was a factor

I bought a new marlin Papoose when I was a young man. Same action as the 60 .Cannot remember what ever happened to it.

I've fixed loads of glenfield and model 60 I love them for what they are but I prefer the Marlin 795

Thinking about getting my kids into shooting and gun safety this year and I knew I had a couple .22's laying around. Just checked and I have the older Squirrel stock with the JM stamped on the barrel and full length tube. If I am doing the serial number right, it's a 1979. Have to clean it up and see how it shoots. Any recommended ammo or just try a bunch?

It's hard to believe you shoot that many rounds without having a misfire I've shoot Winchester ammunition and always have misfire s in all types of ammunition!!

My model 10 single shot it has a wood chuck on it instead of the squirrel.

Love 22 shooting and watching all videos on shooting I notice on some other channels, they “season” the barrel when they change ammo shooting 10 shots or more. Do you think this isn’t necessary? I haven’t never done that but was thinking about trying it out New subscriber here. Thank you for everything

I have four Marlins.. and a few glenfields.. They all shoot great..except one. Jams everytime.. stove pipes.. New feed throat.. new buffer .. new recoil spring.. on and on.. still won't work.. driving me crazy.. But I have others to shoot.

Just picked up one of these today (with the squirrel stock ) ! Found it at the local gun shop , paid $185.00 for it . Looks to be in beautiful shape . Hopefully, it fires as good as it looks . I'll be looking up the serial # as well . Curious when it was made . Anyway , just my 2 cents . I'll be checking out your other videos on it . By the way , where did you purchase your upgrade kit for the bolt hold open ? Sounds like a worthwhile upgrade...Thanks, Dan...

Had both 1022 and 60 I say the 60 shot better gorgious guns

I've been squirrel hunting with a Glenfield model 20 bolt action with a wood chuck engraved on the stock and the JM barrel. I've found it to be accurate. What's your thought and opinion on those.

Who knows? Maybe Ruger will introduce a 1022 tube fed? Lol😅

Keep your 10/22 rugers with crappy factory barrels and crappy mags crappy spongy triggers and it’s ability to mod and upgrade to kingdom kom what a money pit trying to chase accuracy those factory mags and how they are loaded into the chamber will always scrape the bullets, I rather have the sleek tube fed mag that doesn’t deform bullets and has the perfect accurate barrel from the factory ❤ marlin model 60 for life, ill never sell my marlin model 60s, I’ll probably sell all my other stuff before those two rifles, its getting harder and harder to find marlin model 60s in good condition anymore keep them if you have them 😢

Guys spend thousands of dollars chasing accuracy. Most good guns are more accurate than most people can shoot them. Just practice shooting with the gun you have, trigger control and breathing and different positions.
