Shooting Cannon Grapeshot

Today we're going to be shooting an old dishwasher to see what kind of damage will happen with a few different types of grapeshot projectiles to see how they will fly and what kind of damage they will do! We've got bouncy balls, marbles, wooden grapeshot, and the more traditional grape shot and cannonballs. Cannons like ours with a 1.5 inch bore, called robinets, were used as anti-personnel cannons in their time so we're going to be using ours for what it was meant for! How far will the grape shot spread? Will the bouncy balls bounce? Will a marble go through a dishwasher? Let's find out!

I've always wondered what would happen if you shot a few hundred of those .177 cal bbs out of a cannon. I imagine it would have an effect similar to that of a punt gun. Also, steel flechettes would be cool, but I have no idea where you could find any. If you have a MIG welder and an angle grinder, you could probably make some.

Thought it was very interesting how well you could see the different mass of the projectiles affecting the spread of the shot.

Oh for sure. Weight is the main thing that keeps things flying where we aim them. The real cannonballs we can put in the size of a softball all day long but anything slightly lighter is completely unpredictable. I found it horrifying the force that the actual grapes carried and hit that dishwasher with. That was way more force than I expected. It would just vaporize someone.

@@TheCannoneer what would you say the maximum rage is before the accuracy becomes completely unpredictable? And how much of a difference is it between a ball and grape shot?

@@blankslate5981 So far the furthest we've shot at is the previous video where we shot the freezer at 50 yards and with the lead balls we can hit a dinner plate 100% of the time however, lead grapeshot from that range has a very low hit ratio compared to the up closer ranges. Of course when you're talking about lines of soldiers you're bound to hit someone from wherever you're shooting! That video has a few of the fun projectiles at that distance and the lighter they are the less predictable they fly.

You need to put 5 gallon bottle of water inside the dishwasher when you shoot it with the big canon ball. Create hydrostatic shock inside the container should be pretty impressive.

@TheCannoneer I'd love to see the cannon shoot at a boat to see the damage it can do like on some cartoon shit you know. But realistically you're killing it man keep up the great footage we love seeing the craziness of bouncy balls goin at a dishwasher in the middle of the woods lol if I think of something I'll let you know

@TheCannoneer that would be incredible man. The first thing I think of when I think cannon balls are them being shot by pirates at boats. If you can find an old boat and if they'd let you shoot it at that pond would be top notch, definitely would bring alotta traffic over to this channel. I love the originality of it and it's a fkn cannon in 2024 shootin shit who's not gonna like it?! Hahaha, have fun brother. I hope you got the youtube partnership now that you have 500+ subs, cant wait to see what you do next, (also would it be possible to fire a model rocket engine out of the cannon? I know that with muzzle loaders the powder will actually light the engine, but I do not know it will scale upwards)

Great idea! Still working on the watch hours but getting there! I’m going to add that to the list and now I’ve got to find some rocket engines that fit. Start small and scale up.

Cannister and grape shot is 2 different types of loads. But i reckon you know that. Thats a small cannister load your firing. I'm a long time southern living history war of lincolns aggression reenactor...just annoys me when people call cannister - grape.

Indeed you are correct! I’m hoping to make some of the historical grape in the little spring type thing and in the little bags for the naval loads and see how those work in the future. I started calling it canister in the later videos since I figured it out! I’ve been learning a ton about cannons since we started and I’m hoping to get a 3” ordinance gun if the channel gets big enough. I do appreciate you tuning in and for the info!

I was expecting the glass marbles to pierce right through the first layer of steel, just a liiiiiitle more weight and they could have done it. Had these been ball bearings and no one would have been save behind that dishwaher.

Me too. I would have put $$ on them at least going through the door. I’ve got some ball bearings we’re saving for a future video. I think they will be the ones that we will use to test things like steel after lead.

Are you nowhere near the coast or a big lake? I guess permits are the thing but if just firing into water we could see your range and distance from splashes..you might have to use a drone for camera work - so something for your future BIG budget productions…..Pawn Stars likes cannons …perhaps they could put you in touch with some other cannon owners - BIGGER ones …grin 🇮🇪

We’ve got a lake at one of our ranges but I haven’t asked if we can shoot in it yet but that would be a super fun one! I actually have a buddy who’s a commercial drone pilot so he might be able to hop into a video one of these days but he’s a couple of hours away from me and a state over…

@@TheCannoneer since your piece is a smoothbore I doubt the tugsten cor will be able to stabilize by itself. You can make some tests using steel elements to find a working formula (steel is cheap when compared to tungsten). Placing the tungsten insinde of an aerodynamically stable shape like a diabolo pellet, making an APCR shell, would have higher chances of success (include a steel plate as a base otherwise inertia may tore your projectile apart).

Okay , asked and answered...400 to 600 grains. A fun thing to shoot is old CRT Tv sets, they implode nicely.
