Will Sticks Stop a Cannon? Recreating the Battle of Valcour Island

Today we're shooting a stand in USS Philadelphia with our revolutionary war style black powder cannon. Our stand in Philadelphia is made out of 2" thick solid red oak planks. During The Battle Valcour Island in 1776, Benedict Arnold ordered his soldiers to armor up their ships with fascines (bundles of green saplings tightly bound together) in an attempt to block musket fire and small canister shot. Today we're recreating that battle bu armoring up our stand in Philadelphia with a few bundles of fascines and we're going to be shooting it with the standard naval shot from the time to see if the fascines will stop a cannon. Will the fascines stop any projectiles? What kind of damage will they do to the hull? What kind of splinter damage will the hull do to someone on the ship? Let's find out!

Have you ever read about the Royal Navy's "Copper Head" shells, dating from the 1870's?? They were the Victorian version of modern HESH shells, designed to deal with iron clad naval vessels. The shell was a iron cup with a front facing soft copper ball, filled with black powder, fixed to the front. On impact with a piece of sheet iron, the copper ball would deform and spread until the black powder self detonated, transmitting a wracking shock wave through the sheet iron and causing spalling on the far side. Copper Head shells were rendered obstelete, by the 1880's, when laminating sheet iron with oak became standard practice in iron clad warship design.

Fascine relates to the word "fascist" and was a part of the emblem of many fascist groups. It essentially held the connotation of "being united makes strength," just as tying small sticks together makes a strong barrier. It also relates to the word "faggot" which used to mean a "bundle of sticks".

Id like to see cannonballs vs some fortifications. Stone, lumber, maybe some thin metal, and I think it would be cool to have a big piece of cardboard or something like that as a witness plate behind your targets to see how much fragmentation is generated, and how widely it spreads out behind the target. Love these vids man, keep it up!

Oh good idea! I’ve through about that before but I’ll have to look into getting a catcher for the backstop. I just built a cinder block wall so that should be a fun one. I’ll add the others to the list! Thanks for the kind words!
@CZ350tuner
@CZ350tuner Месяц назад
For at least 8 centuries, fortification walls had cavities filled with gravel, sand, soil, etc. to prevent wracking occurring. Wracking is the technical term used to describe the effects of a shock wave, from a non-penetrating impact on one side of a wall, passing through and causing spalling from the opposite side. The expression, "Wrack and ruin" originates from this.
@victormartin2774
@victormartin2774 2 месяца назад
Nerdy snack for the algorithm : At 9:30 you can see the camera shaking because of the shockwawe, this prove that, 1) that cannon has quite a decent amount of power and 2) since the balls impact after the camera was shaked, they are travelling at subsonic speeds. Not surprising considering that they come out of a black powder cannon but balls coming out of a musket would have been faster, although not by much.
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 2 месяца назад
I didn’t ever think about that but it makes complete logical sense. I’ll have to get a chronograph one of these days and see how fast they are really going.
@vfbrs2382
@vfbrs2382 2 месяца назад
@@TheCannoneera chronograph is expensive and needs to be placed far away from the muzzle to avoid errors due to interferences with the smoke of black powder firearms. Frame counting is free but it’s time consuming and can be inaccurate if you are not careful. On the other hand it should work great for grapeshot.

There is a full scale replica of the Philadelphia at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Basin Harbor, Vermont. I've been on it a couple of times when it was actually on Lake Champlain, it's now on the grounds of the museum, more or less minus the guns and gear. My first visit in 2001 that I have photos of show the fascines and how they were hung above the decks leaving about 18 inches of visibility for the gun crews to see out to fire on the enemy. The biggest reason for the fascines was to protect the crews from Mohawk allied to the British because the fleet would be anchored in an inlet and the Mohawk would get close and sneak up to about 50 yards or so from where the ships were anchored and fire on the crews. I tested fascine armor once with a .570" roundball which would have been around the size of the preferred Native American trade muskets and the Fusil de chasse which were about .60-.62 caliber as well as buck n ball loads. The British ships were bigger and had heavier guns than Arnold's fleet and simply more of them. The Philadelphia had three cannons, a 12 pounder and two 9 pounders. If you look at the original Philadelphia that's in the Smithsonian, there's a British cannon ball stuck in the hull and it punched a hole in that helped the gunboat sink.
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer 2 месяца назад
I missed that on the photos! I did see they had a swivel gun that’s the same size as ours! I’m planning on having a buddy that has a bunch of original firearms on at some point and we will shoot some fascines again with those rifles and see what happened. Hopefully I can check out that museum one of these days!

As a defence against period Royal Navy 18, 24, 32, 36 & 42 pound ammunition, shot from Carronades, the fascines would have next to useless. There are videos of what a Carronade ball does to a 12 inches thickness of laminated Oak and it's quire a mess, particularly for anyone on the other side. They were more of a 18th century American "Cope Cage" crew psychological aid.

@carloshenriquezimmer7543
@carloshenriquezimmer7543 2 месяца назад
One thing about the splinters is that it is a very cramped space inside a ship of that era. It is full of stuff, like the cannons, the rigging, metal fittings; not only the wood would be shattered, but everything would be trown around when hit by a cannonball, and those would fly in a small space full of people. I have never seen anyone try to replicate this, it is always a single pannel of timbers and a body analog (a gel block or a pig). It is never impressive, or accurate. Maybe if you try to make a simulated ship's gundeck, with a witness target behind, it would be a better visualization.

I know its sounds lame but when l was 13 and 14 to keep me out of trouble l was kind of made to go watch my dads friend shoot his canons at cival war reenactments and l got totally addicted to the canons and l started shooting them. He had 2 like your with a little bit bigger barrels and he was in charge of all canons at these reanactments and we would go to Fort Morgan Nd Fort Gains that guarded Mobile Bay and we got to shoot their huge canons that are attacthed to the fort walls. And l actually got to shoot them and its like a huge honor because they dont let just anyone shoot those except that 1 guy so anyway your lucky as fk having your own canon. Thats so awesome man.
