Today we're shooting a stand in USS Philadelphia with our revolutionary war style black powder cannon. Our stand in Philadelphia is made out of 2" thick solid red oak planks. During The Battle Valcour Island in 1776, Benedict Arnold ordered his soldiers to armor up their ships with fascines (bundles of green saplings tightly bound together) in an attempt to block musket fire and small canister shot. Today we're recreating that battle bu armoring up our stand in Philadelphia with a few bundles of fascines and we're going to be shooting it with the standard naval shot from the time to see if the fascines will stop a cannon. Will the fascines stop any projectiles? What kind of damage will they do to the hull? What kind of splinter damage will the hull do to someone on the ship? Let's find out!
