The best way to blow a shoot is on someone else's dime. In this case, Braedon's dime. This video teaches you about mistakes that can be made with using strobes for lighting. These same mistakes would happen digitally, but you see your results immediately. With film you don't get to see those results until the film is back.
For most cameras, your shutter sync that fires the flash, and then captures it on your image is 1/125th of a second. We weren't aware before this shoot that with a Pentax 67, the shutter sync is 1/30th of a second. So nothing came out on the initial shoot.
This video talks you through those mistakes, and then explains how to do it right. So if you want to learn how to shoot film in studio, this is a good watch for you.
Let us know what you think and thanks for being a part of our community.

I feel like no one talks about this sort of stuff as it relates to film so THANK YOU!

ahhh the joys of a huge focal plane shutter. Loved the honesty in this vid. The pentax 90mm Leaf shutter lens is a saviour for the studio.

That leaf shutter would have done the trick. We'll have to do a part 2 soon.

@@FilmSupplyClub I highly recommend the 165. Great lens and more of a portrait focal length than the 90 LS.

@@FilmSupplyClub Yeah, they're not that easy to find. When I got mine it was the only one listed on ebay at the time. It's supposedly a lot simpler mechanically than the 90 and easier to fix which is a bonus. It's compatible with the auto extension tubes too.

Crazy getting a camera doing a youtube before learning as much as you can about the camera. Has to be the most fascinating thing to wrap one's head around. I enjoy seeing the luck of getting a clear image after a few rolls of film. It's amazing...

You learn from your mistakes; when all else fails, read the instructions. This is especially important for film as there is no instant feedback. Thanks for the video.

This is something forgotten these days where modern cameras prevent settings that du not sync the flash. When I started photography in the 70's my Prectica had amax sync speed of 1/40 and my spotmatic F 1/60 - for cloth shutter this was common - and the 6x7 is using the same technology - you can bypass this problem by using the LS90/2.8 or the LS165/4, but in a not too light studio environment the long sync speed is no issue - this changes if yo want to use a fill flash at daylight.... no chance for the Pentax 6x7 without a LS-lens

You guys obviously don't watch enough RU-vid. They always talk about the 1/30th sync speed with the Pentax 67, especially if they comparing it to the RZ67. But loved the honesty! These things happen.
@FilmSupplyClub
@FilmSupplyClub 3 года назад
Braedon responding here. I watch almost zero RU-vid. But which I had before this one. It literally didn’t cross my mind the shutter sync would be so slow. Lesson learned.
@seanfshannon
@seanfshannon 3 года назад
@@FilmSupplyClub Hey Braedon. Probably a good thing that you hardly watch any RU-vid. I watch far too much! I hear you completely, if you didn't know it would seem completely bazaar that the sync speed was only 1/30 of a second. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the follow up video. Always enjoy your stuff!

You would get the same problem with the Contax 645 you show in your vid, just at a higher shutter speed.

You mentioned the incident meter reading was f16 and you put at it at f8 to place the highlights based on the zone system? Does the zone system not use reflected metering and the the incident metering would have placed the highlights properly anway due to incident measurement? The f8 was required to balance the left and right lighting exposures?
