In 2022 I converted my Fuji X-T3 to a dedicated 720NM infra red camera. Now thats ping has arrived, the infra red photography season has started and I venture out on my first infra red photo shoot of 2023. I take my camper van and set off to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but am I too early?

Your videos from last year started my own IR photography journey. Thank you for that! One note on IR filters on unconverted cameras with long exposure: that might not work for some camras. In particular, Sonies have very powerful hot mirror filter which hardly lets any IR light in, so with 720nm filter they will just be let through a tiny portion of visible light.
@KyleClements
@KyleClements Год назад
Thanks for posting another great video. I got a full spectrum conversion on a Z5 a few months ago that I use with filters, and 720nm is by far the one I use most often. When the light is bad for my regular camera, it's great for IR. With my Z lenses, some of them like the 50mm /1.8 are perfect, while others have hotspots that appear if I stop down below /8.

I picked up a Nikon Z7II in anticipation of the thing you can't talk about that your making a video for next week. I mean if Nikon is going to make the very thing I want finally, then I should be in the system. The only problem I I think it's going to be Christmas 2025 before there's enough stock to actually get one for us mere mortals. (If it's what we have all been hopping for.) Cheers! 🙂

A quick tip for anyone that are considering to convert a camera to infrared: if you convert it to full spectrum, you'll have the flexibility to use various infrared filters and take photos as fast as a regular camera. If you use a filter on a regular camera, you could require a long shutter speed to get a good result. And you can also get a filter that makes it like a regular camera, so the same camera can be used for infrared and regular shots

Always good to see you get the IR out! Skeletal trees work well - some great trees on Hadrian's Wall. As you've said, it totally transforms summer - which I know how much you hate! :D Hotspots are always fun though. When I bought my last IR camera (a Z5) I bought the Z 24-200 to go with it, thinking it would be like the perfect 18-200 matched to my D7100 IR. Turns out it's the worst hotspotting lens I've ever had. It now lives on my Z7, which seems daft! and... OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Z8?!!

@@explorewithgeoff I understand what you're saying, but the truth is Nikon isn't pricing you out of the market. Either you are in the market for a high-end flagship camera or you're not. In fact if anything, they are opening up the high-end market to more users. You can't get a cheaper flagship model than what's coming. But they do need to bring out a Z6iii to get more enthusiasts in the system.
@thephotoyak

Thomas, good sources for knowledge which lens creates hotspots at which aperture are for example kolarivision, edwardnoble and robsheaphotography. Also manual vintage lenses without coatings tend to have no hotspots at all. I use some Konica Hexanon lenses adapted to my full spectrum X-T10 and they work excellent. Got my camera converted after you inspired me last year btw. Thanks for that, no regrets at all. And I use it also for astrophotography with the increased sensitivity in the reds.

Another IR option is to go with the Sigma Foveon cameras that have a removable IR cut filter in front of the sensor, such as the Sigma SD1 Merrill or the Sigma SD Quattro. The extra benefit of these cameras is the insane, medium format level detail resolution you'll get along with it. And you don't need to permanently convert the camera at all.
