Olympus has a built in camera feature that captures up to super high resolution RAW file of 80MP. I explore the mechanism on how this technique works in the OM-D cameras, the benefits and disadvantages of using the high res shot and also the technical restrictions that come with it. Also, how to activate and use it!

Tip: you can combine the high-res shot with the 2x digital tele mode! It still produces the 50 and 80mp images, but cropped in 50% and then upscaled. So if you have a 300mm lens (600mm full frame equiv), this gives you 600mm (1200mm full frame equiv)!

Another great vid Robin, I really feel your efforts (and those of Matti, Rob T, Peter F, Red 35, & the 2 Joe’s) have developed into a great online resource for m43 users. There’s huge value in all of this for the rest of us & obviously anyone thinking of getting into the system. I bought an Oly EM1.2 in Nov and these videos helped guide my decision before hand & are now helping me come to terms with the camera. For the record my cameras prior to this were very simple, 1998 to date, Ricoh GR1, Voigtlander Bessa, Leica M6, M7, Sigma DP2 Merrill, Fuji X100,...the Oly is definitely a bit more involved. It’s amazing ergonomics by the way.

Thanks for the kind words, I do what I can to help, and I have been getting a lot of questions about Micro Four Thrids in general. Making these videos help me answer potential future questions, say someone is to ask about where to activate the high res shot, or how does it work, I can show them this video. Saves me time in a long run.

I am getting in on the use of the High Res modes a few years late with my new E-M1X but am glad for the information you've shared. My first tests were with the handheld mode with grasses in the foreground in the wind but shooting with allowances for wind movement, it was still very impressive. I've been doing a lot of research trying to find the right camera for the kind of work I want to do and it was a toss-up between Sony or the OM-D E-M1 Mark III. The 50-megapixel handheld convinced me to go with the OM-D E-M1 Mark III although there are many other features and advantages to buying into the Olympus brand. When I shoot architecture with landscape I shoot my hi res shot and a normal 20 megapixel shot. I layer them in Photoshop after up-res the 20 megapixel image to match the hi res shot. You erase areas which have movement from the hi res shot which shows the lower res shoot without movement. The up res shot is still better than hi res motion. I also pop the number two card from the EM1mkII. It writes to the card slower and slows up the total process time. The number one card will process and write much faster on it's own.
@robinwong
@robinwong 4 года назад
When you shoot in high res mode, Olympus gives you a single 20MP RAW file from one of the 8 frames (I assume the first) for this purpose of layering.

@Sjekster
@Sjekster 4 года назад
I love high res shot! I mainly use it for long exposure photography, that's where it shines for me. I have made long exposures in the minutes (per individual shot, so times 8 for the total exposure!). The disadvantage of strange movement artefacts is negligible then, since that movement is smoothed out anyway. Btw, your examples of that movement between shots are quite nice by itself, like the one with the bird. It kinda turned that disadvantage into a creative tool. The E-M1.2 is the first camera in a long time, that I really fell in love with! So much, that I won't see myself upgrading in a while. Maybe when a E-M1.4 comes out, I'll have a look again ;). That said, I'm quite curious what the E-M1.3 will bring! If it's only the few extras of the E--M1X, like LiveND and Handheld HiRes, that would be a shame. Handheld Hires seems awesome, but I don't shoot many short exposures with Hi Res, so I use a tripod anyway. LiveND is a very cool feature, but not enough to upgrade for. Olympus upgrades have been a little underwhelming (even the Em5.3, although of course the AF upgrades are very nice!), so I hope they can surprise us!

Thanks, another great 4K video! It would be useful to see visual comparisons of the same subject scene between the regular JPG, HiRes JPG, HiRes RAW and EM1X HiRes handheld modes while you are doing the verbal narration. A comparison of the same scene shot in HiRes between the ordinary M.Zuiko 45mm f1.8 and it's PRO counterpart would also be useful to know how much difference that expensive glass makes. Finally, it would be interesting to know when and whether lens diffraction at smaller apertures compromises the final image resolution.
@robinwong
@robinwong 4 года назад
Thanks for the suggestions. I thought of doing some comparisons, but the 4K resolution made it difficult to do so. I don't have a 4K monitor screen, so I cannot just screen capture the view from my post processing software, the 1080p display will not look good.

Thank you Robin for pointing out that the resolution is closer to 50 Mpx. Pretty much my experience too. I shoot architecture for a living and I found my Nikon D810’s 36 Mpx providing pretty much the same information (if not even more) than the E-M1’s High Res Mode. Don’t get me wrong - I think it’s an awesome feature, especially since it’s processed in-camera (unlike Sony). And I hope that Olympus keep improving it.
@robinwong
@robinwong 4 года назад
To fully maximize the benefit of high res shot you do need very sharp lens. Then you can see the full 50MP resoluion. Indeed, the in camera on click implementation is convenient. I think Sony needs a super powerful processor to have this happen with their much larger file sizes.
@ThomasGeist
@ThomasGeist 4 года назад
Robin Wong Of course I used any of Olympus’ top (Pro) lenses. Plus a super sturdy tripod, geared head and L-bracket. So the conditions are good. I’ve had several people ask why in-camera processing would be important. Easy. That way you can check focus and sharpness while shooting. The main reasons why yo’d use high res mode in the first place! ☺️

One of my use cases too, but with 6x9 film (and only when I want finely defined grain). I use the Olympus 30mm 3.5 macro lens for those applications, and it does a marvelous job (its resolution at f5.6 or f6.3 is perfect for 80MP shots) - much cheaper than the 45mm 1.2 … ;-)

@@c.augustin I bought this lens for low light and for portrait shots. But its great for repro-work as well, especially since its still regarded to be the sharpest Mft lens available, as far as I know. When you "scan" an 11x14, you need a long copy stand rod for that lens, though.

Hi great and informative video. I’ve been shooting with Sony A6300 and love it but I have been looking into getting an em5 mk2 or em1 mk1 to add a second camera with different feature because of affordability, image stabilisation high res feature and how light the lenses are etc. However I was wondering if the em1 mk1 has the high res option now with an update? I’ve been reading conflicting info. Some articles say yes and some no. Also will high res work at all with non pro lenses so I could at least practice until I can afford a pro lens? I wasn’t sure if you meant it could still work with non pro lens or not. Also which of the two would best suit me for shooting mainly wildlife, landscape, macro, a little video of macro wildlife and dabble for fun in Astro/lightning photography but that last one not crucial. Again a great and very informative video. Thanks

Good overview, Robin! I'm still experimenting with HR mode myself. Those whiffed Hi Res shots are actually kinda cool. However, I'm sad that it doesn't work on the moon, which seems to move too fast for a clean HRS but not fast enough to make some sort of cool effect.
@robinwong
@robinwong 4 года назад
The Earth is constantly moving, and the Moon too, hence both subjects are not perfectly still. Bear in mind, even just a half pixel distance mismatch, the images cannot be composited properly into one.
@JeffreyMcPheeters
@JeffreyMcPheeters 4 года назад
Yes, it takes at least 1/100 shutter speed to get the moon and since the E-M1.2 takes 1 second and the E-M1X takes 1/60 second at their fastest to do the seqence of shots, it’s not possible unless mounted on a tracking mount. I can do this on tracking mounts. Also, interestingly, the hand held variety of the E-M1X works fine with the moon IF you have enough telephoto or enough other contrasting details in the frame for the calculations to work. For example, hand held high res of the moon, if it’s in a dark sky, and if the moon is not sufficiently large enough within the frame, won’t likely work. Still, as Robin noted, the hand held high res is not the same overall quality as the tripod version, and in my experience, I’d rather use a standard image of the moon or even the jpeg 2x maginified view, will often be better than the hand held high res version when looked at closely. But it’s all getting better all the time and in the future, we’ll see even more robust kinds of calculated images I expect.

I've recently bought the M5 MkIII and it has this function too. But you cannot open the resulting RAW file in Lightroom or Photoshop. Do you have to download and use the Olympus Workspace program to see and use the High Res file? How are you supposed to do post-processing on it and print it?
@stevocem
@stevocem 3 года назад
Hi Robin, I am thinking to do some artworks reproduction work in high res mode. I use to stitch those images to get even more overall resolution, a kind of plane panorama. My question is: If I capture 2 images in 80mp high res from a tripod, with some overlapping, do you think that the stitching will be possible? My worry is the Olympus calculation in the camera to get a 80MP image. Is this laws the same formula? For example, I photograph a painting. I capture an 80 MP picture of the corner of painting first, then I move on an electronically controlled and highly precise tripod to capture the next area, with overlap. The parallelism, illumination, etc., remain perfect and the same. Do you think that the 2 images will look same or is there a danger that the camera recomposes the second high res image a little differently, which makes the stitching impossible? Any idea would be of great help. All the best, your videos are amazing. You are a very positive person and it is a pleasure to watch you speaking.

Robin, How do you actually process the High Res files? I have an OM1 MkII and the v1.0 photoshop plug-in but I can't get it to work! I always have 2 files generated: one ORF and one ORI . Is the ORI a sidecar for the ORF? What is the trick. I have tried in the Olympus Workflow program as well but never achieved anywhere near the file size or resolution.

Mr. Robin, what is your final opinion regarding the E-M1X? We can say that it is a camera suitable for both photographic hunting and sports photography, and why not also for street photography? Thank you very much.

Robin, I am having one major problem. I just got an OMD E-M1 III and when I do a 80mp Hi Res "Raw" on my tripod with a 4 sec delay before the shot starts, the image comes out blurred. But If I shoot 80mp jpeg it is perfectly sharp. Why is the raw blurry but a jpeg sharp? I have tried delays from 2 sec all the way up to 8 secs and still the raw is blurred but the jpegs clear.

can you use the built in ND filter with the Hi-Res?

One more technical limitation, I think, is that you can’t use Interval Timer. It doesn’t say it in the manual but Interval Timer only allows Single/Anti-shock/Silent, and setting High Res turns Interval Timer off. I can’t see that it mentions it in the manual, and I don’t really understand why it should be the case. I expect if I buy a cable-release with an intervalometer built-in, then it should work, but that seems a bit strange. I am trying this on an EM1 mk3 with a 12-40 Pro (and just starting to dabble in astrophotography). Should it work (and I just have some conflicting setting perhaps) ?

@stephanepost

Ong Donavon - Yes it does, and quite a lot actually (I’ve used it quite extensively on my E-M1.2). I can’t remember who tested it but it actually matches or even slightly exceeds the DR of the FF cameras with the best DR, such as the Nikon D850 and the Sony A7r3.

Something you go over really fast, but should be explained better is no matter how many megapixels you have, if the lens cannot resolve the image, the image will be poor. Paraphrasing what you said around 11:37.

Hi-Res is brilliant - except for a major failing. It cannot be used via WiFi with Oi Share, I've been trying, but when using Oi Share via smartphone, the Hi-Res option is not there.

I like the high res mode and have gotten some impressive results. However, it doesn't work for moonshots. I've taken shots of the moon with a 300mm F/4 lens, but the moon is moving too quickly across the frame with this level of magnification. A nice upgrade to high res mode would a 'moonshot mode' that compensates for this movement, which is quite linear, steady and predictable (especially with location data, entered manually or via GPS on the E-M1X).
@LexTNeville
@LexTNeville 4 года назад
Great point. If there were any variation in the speed which the moon moves across our sky, it would likely be accompanied by a pretty major disaster. Sounds achievable. Hi Res Moon Mode enabled!
@terrylovejoy3147
@terrylovejoy3147 4 года назад
Actually, you can use the moons motion to achieve the same effect as moving the sensor. Take a series of images in high speed sequential mode (say 100 images) and use a program called PIPP to center and crop the images on the moon. Then stack these cropped images in Autostakkert using the 3x drizzle mode, then finally sharpen the image (recommend either registax or Astra Image). It takes a bit of learning to get the hang of these programs but the results will be likely be better than anything you could achieve in Hires mode.

High res mode would be good for landscape photography. But using tripod is essential usually, if it does not need tripod, would be great.

I tried it on a night when the moon and clouds moving across moon were quite fast. The pictures were blurry and shows overlapping moons. Switching back to normal mode and ensuring shutter speed was about 600th of a second, I can get sharp moon at normal resolution. So Robin's advice seems to work if the moon and clouds are relatively still. Anyone have same experience or is it just me goofing !
@gingerstuey
@gingerstuey 4 года назад
Since you can't have any movement, do you think Olympus is going to make a firmware update that provides a 2 sec delay on pressing the shutter? Even on a tripod, just releasing the shutter button moves the camera enough to ruin my images. I was surprised to see that the O.I. Share app doesn't include this as a shutter option, because using the app as a remote would be a huge help. (I have the 5mii, maybe this is included on the 5miii or MK1)
