In this video we tackle a question that I've personally have struggled with over the years which is: Is it worth it to shoot real estate videos in a log picture profile in order to get more dynamic range? In the video I will compare standard footage to LOG and see what the difference in dynamic range actually is.

Some people are hellbent on doing these big productions for real estate when they are only charging a few hundred dollars. I think your time is more valuable unless you are getting paid.

If you use the gamma display assist while shooting Slog 3 which helps you get accurate white balance.. and using the neutral "phantom lut " your work flow will be the same as shooting in pp1 tweaking every clip .. all while having way better dynamic range ... you can also shoot 12,800 in SLog 3 with minimal noise if you need it in a dark room

Regardless if you shoot in log or Pp1 you're gonna have to hit the hue saturation tab to mute some of that orange tungsten light out depending on the actual scene ...

The view out the window can be a significant selling point for the room. I'd shot in SLog3 and add the LUT of your choice. That shouldn't change much from room to room. Make sure you can adjust highlights pre LUT as that might change depending on where the window is relative to the sun when you shoot. Consider how important bracketing is to real estate photos. If you can close to that with windows during video you may outclass your competitors.

Not my log workflow at all. I have an a6400 (ASP-C) and shoot interiors PP7, F4, 4K30, shutter minimum is 1/60 but go faster if needed, Auto ISO 500-1600. From there I'll set EV comp to +1 to +1.7 and use whatever EV comp and shutter speed to get my ISO to be as low as possible. PP7 base ISO is 500. I get well exposured interiors without a ton of noise and significantly improved dynamic range. Similar to how you suggested there that auto detect feature in premiere, i use color space transform in resolve to transform from slog2 to davinci wide gamut then to rec709. No manually tweaking each clips as you suggested. With 5-10 extra clicks at the start of the project everything is the same as any other project without a PP.

Log is worth it. I’d consider shooting 60fps so you can lower your shutter speed or shooting iso 12800 and closing your aperture for a sharper image. 120fps also has a 1.1 crop, taking 16mm to 17.6mm. In my opinion, that is too tight. I choose to shoot 12mm to 16mm on my wide shots. Thanks for the video, mate👊

Couple of things to bear in mind. Some interiors are dark - this combined with a bright day outside can make dealing with windows challenging. 2 not all cameras can use high frame rates to the extent of using a shutter speed of 1/250 .

I think anyone who's able to do RE photography to a high standard can figure out how to expose when shooting log. It's easy using a histogram. As for a complicated workflow in post - you can simply use the manufacturers technical LUT to change it from log to rec709 - it takes no time. I'm a bit confused by the debate to be honest... I think 99% of the RE video guys are shooting log, along with the rest of the film and video industry.

dude, thanks for this comment. I really dont understand why there is this huge misunderstanding. My expertise is photography and felt more confused with video because of all the LOG concerns starting. all you have to do is just get the camera makers LUT and batch apply it... its not complicated at all

Great video. Curious if you might have edited a (exact) complete video using both techniques and timing each so that you might determine a % time increased to using the LOG process (shoot & edit) and translating that to costs? Maybe then you could charge a premium "price bump" to offer that extra if the client wants it. I am curious in your experience what the time increase was using the LOG technique. If not that might be a great video to make. Breaking it down to numbers.

This is a nice comparison. I’m not sure there’s enough difference to justify the extra time for log. The lighting in every room will probably be different and exterior lighting conditions will also play a role in the window view. I’d probably stick with the standard profile unless the realtor was willing to pay extra money for log, which most wouldn’t. The best case scenario would be to video the interior on an overcast day or early or late in the day, which would surely create a mess with scheduling. Sometimes we just have to do the best we can, within reason, with what we have to work with. Nice video.

@@IyanuWole for real estate you’re better off is a7siii. They are both essentially the same camera but the a7siii is cheaper. You won’t really be using any of the extra features of the fx3 for real estate shoots.

After 2 years of shooting in SLOG3, I finally threw in the towel a few weeks ago. The amount of time required to get it "just right" in post was insane. Now I shoot in PP off, NT with a few tweaks (highlights/shadows -2, saturation +2). Works like a charm!

@@steveparkins6854 Most of the videos shot on my YT channel in the past 6 months have been shot with PP off. Many were also recorded in 1080p and then upscaled to 4k. Let me know what you think!

I dont know man, but I love shooting my RE videos in CLog3. I did the switch like 3 properties ago and man... I do see the difference brother! Day and night, lol. I mean, It does add maybe 5 minutes of tweaking on the turnaround but I don't mind bc the pay off is so big. Maybe SLog and CLog aren't as closely regarded as I thought. IDK, subjective, Amirite? 🤷🏻‍♂

I stopped using my A7S3 and now use my iPhone 15 Pro Max with the Blackmagic App. The dynamic range is fantastic, have complete control with the blackmagic app and I have to say blows away the A7S3 standard profile and log profiles with dynamic range. I mount it on my DJI Ronin RS3 so it looks more professional.....but the outcome is amazing.

@@HiFocusedCinematography I was surprised too after starting to use if for all RE videos. I know a few others that started to use the iPhone 15 Pro Max for video. It sad....but blows away the A7S3's dynamic range and several others. I shoot PP8 SLOG3 with A7siii i think it’s really not much more work. As long as you overexpose and either shoot 640 or 12800 ISO. I typically use the Gerald Undone LUT and turn down contrast. I also find it way better color when shooting people with their skin tone.

PP5 is MUCH BETTER! Here are my settings. Gamma: Cine 4 Color Mode: ITU709 Matrix Saturation +2 Seriously, I spent 30 days with my Sony A7S3 exploring color and DR. This is about as good as it gets without going to SLOG 3.

In my opinion, it is about delivering a high quality video and there is no way PP1 will ever be as good as SLOG3. I use Davinci so I have color grade presets set up in Powergrade folder so everytime I create a new project they are available. Too simple. You are making minor tweaks on PP1 and I am doing same with SLOG3 which I would bet that will always look better than PP1. Sorry I think you are giving out some pretty cruddy advice.
