Shooting Sequins at 50 yards with 22 long rifle

Once a month I go to the small bore benchrest match at Bayou Rifles gun club. We shoot three bench rest targets then for added fun we shoot aspirins at 50 yards. 22-Plinkster calls this drug abuse, maybe that is why we switched to sequins this time. This was going to be camera experiment part 2 but since this was a real shooting match I figured it deserved a better name. It was a cold rainy day with wind blowing in from the left then the front then the right and back again. When I remove the camera to insert the bolt you can see the rain drops on my rifle stock. I tied for first place with 8 hits. I am not sure of this count, maybe something fell off while I was carrying the wet target so leave a comment as to what you think the count is. The rifle was custom made in Houston by

@@AmateurRedneckWorkshop try standing up shooting or at the least a bag or bi-pod. I see guys at he range with these sleds bragging with their one inch groups where all they did was load the rifle and pull the trigger 5 times. You can do that with your eyes closed.The rifle never moves in a sled.
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop

@@DLN-ix6vf from the things you are saying it is obvious that you have never been very close to this competition and have never shot at one of these targets. You are embarrassing yourself. You have not noticed that the rifles used here are 22LR. I have done this and no one is good enough a shot to shoot this off hand. No one is shooting for groups. Without a good scope you cannot even see the rings on the target. AT 50 yards with iron sights each of the 25 bulls looks like a black circle. You will need a rifle at least as good as an Anschutz with a good scope. You have 20 minutes to shoot one time at each of the bulls. If you hit inside the 9 ring you will hit some part of the 10 ring and score 10 points. If you obliterate the 10 ring you also get to count an X on that bull. As you go down in number (up in size) each ring counts one less point. A perfect score is 250 points and 25 "X"'s Scoring ring sizes in inches are: 10 - 0.100" = 10 points 9 - 0.300" = 9 points 8 - 0.550" = 8 points 7 - 0.850" 6 - 1.200" 5 - 1.600" 4 - 2.050" = 4 points. Outside this circle deduct 10 points. I have seen people try to shoot this with standard factory guns like a 10/22 and they never do well. People who have been there and done that can easily see that you have no idea what you are talking about.

@@AmateurRedneckWorkshop we have older guys at our range using lead-sleds all the time and bragging about their 1/2 " groups. It's very very funny but they are old so we just let it go. My .22 is a Bergara B14r , shoots fairly well but again I don't use a lead-sled just a bi-pod.

We've been using Tic Tacs indoors on a 50' range. They fit right in a previous 22 hole and the spongy material of the backer holds them secure. Get a nice little color burst depending on the flavor, lol.

when I was a kid we would kill squirrels by "barking them" We would use a high powered rifle, generally a 30-06. We would aim as close to the head as possible without hitting it and wait until the head came close to the tree or limb and fire aiming as close to the head and hitting the bark thus killing the squirrel from the concussion.

what kind of ammo are you using? I have a nice Schultz & Larsen M70 that I recently acquired and love very much so far. it has a nice 26", .920" barrel and I'm looking for the best ammo to shoot with it. I've tried 9 brand or model and so far I got my best results with: Blazer, CCI Stinger, and the two best: Remington 22 Target and Remington Viper P.S. I only have peep sights, no scope for now

Daniel I use Eley Match ammo in the black box. The usual speed is about 1065 FPS. Lately I have been experimenting with 1070 FPS but most people prefer between 1050 and 1060 FPS. Among other places you can get this from Killoughs shooting supply. At 50 yards you cannot get by without a good scope and the more power the better. The scope I use is a T36 Weaver. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

I am looking through the view finder of a JVC digital camera. You can see better looking through the scope than through the camera but as you see it is doable. I have some videos on my youtube channel showing how I made the camera mount and my first experiment with it. It is very simple to do. The main thing needed is to get the camera as close to touching the scope lens as possible so it will focus properly. I hope this link will take you there; Rifle scope video camera mount part 1

Great video footage looking through and shooting the Weaver T36. When the t36 can be had for ~$420 and the nightforce 42x44 goes for ~$1700, it made me really worried that the weaver was not very good. But the image quality looked perfectly fine in your video. Have you had a chance to look through the nightforce competition scopes? If so, what differences did you notice?

What brand is your 22 my husband has a 22 but it is so dang loud.I noticed yours is more quiet.
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop 8 лет назад
+sarah joseph your husband is probably using high velocity 22LR. For the type of shooting I am doing here (bench rest) you use standard velocity 22LR so that the bullet does not break the sound barrier. If the bullet breaks the sound barrier it is louder, that is the loud crack you hear. In theory if you break the sound barrier the bullet will slow on the way to the target and the pressure wave following it can catch the bullet and make it wobble. So bench rest shooters use ammo that stays around 1050 feet per second. My rifle is a custom made rifle specially for bench rest and has no actual brand. It was custom made for me by Evilio McDonald who was once in Houston but has since moved out to Wimberly Texas. It is a single shot bolt action rifle. It does not have a magazine, each round it loaded into the chamber by hand. He makes some very nice bench rest rifles but they can easily approach the $2000 mark. Thanks for stopping by.
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop 8 лет назад

@AmateurRedneckWorkshop 7 лет назад
No one shoots bench rest without a rest. In fact it is a part of the name. Some competitions require you to use a 2 piece bench rest, others allow a one piece. 50 yards is a long way for a 22LR bullet to travel in a straight line. The wind causes deflection most of the time. A 10 mph wind can move the bullet about one inch off target.
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop
@AmateurRedneckWorkshop 7 лет назад
I did not mean that you had to use a rest. I meant the if you did their were certain rules about it. I have only shot small bore bench rest so I do not know the least bit about bench rest for center fire rifles. The closest I come to owning a center fire rifle is a 45 acp carbine. It is good to be good enough a shot to shoot in any national competition, congratulations. By the way would you be interested in buying a nice 22LR custom made bench rest rifle and Papas rest and some wind flags?

Last year I shot with the air rifle guys at my shooting club. None were as good as you. They had these $3000+ air guns and were shooting out doors on a tree and brush shaded range. They were shooting at less than 50 yards. The fellow who is the most experienced runs the match and he came to the small bore benchrest matches a few times and his high dollar air rifle could not handle the wind and so he was not competitive even with a low scoring shooter like me. So he gave it up. I would think with your considerable talent you would go to the air rifle nationals a lot. You probably have this info already but here it is anyway. www.usairriflebenchrest.com/notes-from-the-bench/target-tolerances-scoring/

Great, most of the folks who claim to do better with their 10/22 or slingshot have no proof. Not that I am saying I am a good shot, I am in the poor to average group. I used to shoot with some fellows who always scored at least 748 and better every match. I doubt that they could put 22lr bullet on bullet unless it was the very rare still day. If you notice in this video we were shooting in a light rain with some side wind. I have no idea of the quality of a fx typhoon and no interest in finding out but the people I know who shoot air rifle benchrest pay thousands for their air rifles and cannot hang with the 22lr group. Just my experience is the only reason I have to doubt you. For all I know you may be a world champion and shoot better than the fellow who has the Teds Holdover channel. But most of the people who come here talking trash probably do not even have a rifle.
