Shooting the Breeze. An Evening's Rove.Traditional English Longbow Archery. The ancient practise of roving marks, shooting long-distance target areas. A glorious evening of good fellowship, drawing big bows and seeing arrows flying past the setting sun.
By kind permission of landowners Mr Guy Mansfield and Mr Willy Hallifield. Very many thanks from Mr Gary Williamson and all those present for giving access to your land on such a beautiful evening.
The archers: Phil Kearey, John Cullwick, Mark Brownridge, Steve Djurovich, Mike Strong, Gareth Luke Adams, David Peach, Gary Williamson & Mick Grewcock.
With thanks to Gary Williamson for bringing us all together for a very special evening of summertime archery.
And a big thank you to all for your fellowship that evening.

I'm Mick Grewcock, retired from business and now self-learning the arts of longbow- and film-making. Join me in my light-hearted quest for knowledge as I learn to combine the ancient craft of bow-making with digital videography and film making - I'd be delighted to have you for company on this bizarre journey combining digital and primitive technology.
I have a deep passion for the medieval English longbow, the grreat warbow - the bow that earned its fearsome reputation during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the ferocious battle fields of France and England during the One Hundred Years War. It is an iconic weapon - and to this day, exudes heritage and awesome power.
Lots of bow making on my channel - do browse, view, like comment and subscribe. I have videos on making yew, hazel, elm and blackthorn longbows as well as many others related to primitive and instinctive archery, target archery arrow and bow making. In my videos you will see and hear what it is like to self learn bow making. I am self-taught as a bowyer and still learning every day - sometimes I fail, sometimes I succeed; but I'm always learning. I also explore the UK's rural landscape, sometimes in search of bow making woods, discovering survival skills, sometimes in search of the glories of this landscape. Do subscribe if you'd like to join me and influence what I upload and create more videos.

Mick, what I wouldn't give to have just BEEN there with you and your mates, eight sturdy Englishmen loosing arrows together. This is one of your most enjoyable videos yet. I hope you and the others enjoy many more such outings together.

Johannes, I could not agree more. I'm at best a backyard archer, not nearly so bold or talented as Mick is to fabricate his own bows, but I sure do love my small collection of longbows and recurves. Mick and his fellows clearly had a wonderful time which all of them will remember for life. Cheers!

That's what archery is all about! The good old English longbow, no fancy gizmos. There's nothing like using a bow and some arrows that you've crafted yourself, I only wish I could find a like-minded group where I live. I envy you Mick!!!!!

That video possessed a level of inherent grace and elegance of recorded archery style with the bows that could almost have distracted attention from the deadly potential those gentler qualities were unleashing. There was such a quiet, gentle beauty running through that film Mick ...

Hi Richard. Glad you enjoyed - it was a special evening and I hope that I managed to capture some of that magic. Yes there is a title to the music but I'll have to re-check it and tag a message to this one when I have reminded myself of it! Good luck with the warbow; it is a mighty weapon and well worth the time and dedication learning to use it.

Mick Grewcock I’ll join one of the local clubs and get some experience first, find out what my old and flabby body can put up with! 🤪 Once I know my limits, I can then think about an appropriately proportioned bow.....I watched your target shooting vid....I can see that it’ll be practice, practice and more practice....😜
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 4 года назад
Richard Baxter If I may suggest: make contact with warbow archers rather than a regular archery club. The philosophies are very different. So called warbows are necessarily heavy in draw weight but you will be welcomed at much lower weights. Archers who use heavier bows employ different techniques to regular target archers and getting involved with a traditional longbow group will expose you to the appropriate skills and techniques. Good luck.

Evening Mike, I absolutely loved your video, the camera work, archery, sunset... Beautiful :) I have been shooting bows since I was 10 years old, in various styles and techniques (Recurve, Compound and longbow), I have put down the compound bow and picked up my longbows again (i'm currently shooting my brothers 50lb Tomahawk woodland and loving it!) but I have always wanted to try my hand at a traditional English Yew longbow and one day to strive towards using an English warbow, however, I live in New Zealand and they are not the most common bows around. I was wondering if you or your fellow Archers could point me towards a great website to purchase my own longbow/warbow with shipping to New Zealand :) keep up the amazing videos and I hope you and your fellow archers have tremendous fun.

Ah, to Mick and his fellow rovers, I'm sorry I failed to pick up on launching at a setting sun. Seems shooting celestial bodies might be in the genes of archers though. The case at our Korean traditional archer club. Our club is on the side of a hill on the north side of a former, world cup stadium and faces east. Not every month, but some, we get a full moon rising that arcs over the stadium. New members take the opportunity to silhouette themselves with the stadium behind them and draw so that the moon is at the tip of their drawn arrow. Truth is it’s all in the trickery of the person with the camera. No shots are actually taken, except those of a camera. However, a bottle or two of soju, maeju (beer-barley), or mokolae (beer-rice) do seem to disappear after this ritual. Sadly, this practice doesn’t really add the “Blood Density Points” to oneself. Not like that of actually being in the outdoors, as done by you rovers. PS - Please, could you ask the horsebow rover if he could launch one arrow for an old hornbow archer stuck in the second largest city in Korea - namely me. Best and all the rest. D

Mick, oh how I miss old fashioned "clout shooting" (what you're calling 'roving') ... I havent had the opportunity to do that since oh 1995 or so. There just arent enough large unoccupied publically accessible open spaces here in suburbia to do it safely. Heck, if i walked into a public park or school scrimmage field around here with my longbow, i'd probably get tackled by good samaritans or the police. SIGH. Anyway, when a few friends and I were clout shooting back in the 90's (an alumni reunion of a boys camp in new hampshire, if I recall), we usually staked out an old queen or king sized bed sheet on the ground, and used spray paint to mark concentric circles on it, and then we started from 75 yds or so, and gradually worked our way outwards after each flight, in 25 yd increments, until we either ran out of space or reached the max range of our bows. I vaguely recall 100 yds being the most popular range for the bows we were using (40-60#) ... far enough to force us to "arch" our shots (hence the name of the sport), yet close enough so we could still see where our shots landed so we could adjust accordingly. The stronger the bow, the higher an angle you had to shoot to avoid overflying the target.

Great times they sound. I was just aiming for the field - and only missed it once!!

Mick Grewcock You ... missed the field ? Blahahaha 😂 Always a pleasure, Mick.

I reckon we've all done that. :-) Looks like a safe place to stand in the other field would be close to the flag. Nothing unusual about that either.

Rod Parsons True. Case in point - I managed to miss not only the target but the entire wall in a game of darts once. Rather embarassing.

:-) A fear of embarassment is maybe a more common characteristic of those who rely upon the purchase of accessories and this year's model rather than the employment of keen observation, native intelligence and useful practice. Seems to me that a sense of humour is essential when we choose to shoot a self-bow with wooden arrows of our own making.

Was the English long/ war bow actually Welch in origin?

Some say so, but the origins of longbow-type bows seem to be rooted somewhere in Europe. Certainly the Welsh longbow has a long and noble history and we who enjoy such bows owe them much!
