A tip I'd offer is the disposable shower caps for covering the camera and lens. I've used a Walmart bag at times but they tend to blow around a bit and you can't see through them. The shower caps are clear, have elastic on the opening and don't blow around or come off accidentally. Obviously you wouldn't shoot through it but you can see through well enough to frame up a shot when waiting for conditions to change. The caps are about one dollar for 15 as best I remember and are reusable. I always keep several in all my bags and give one to all my workshop participants before going into the field. Something else is to keep one on the camera when near a waterfall even if it isn't raining to help prevent spray from covering the lens until ready to shoot. Sometimes you don't notice spray on the lens until you get the photos on the computer.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Thanks for the post/tip Philip ... sounds like another good idea!:) The shower cap has the elastic wrap making it less likely to fall off. I typically use a bag only if it is raining hard over a long period of time. I have used my camera in light rain/mist without any issues.

I am in my 50’s and was looking for a hobby that I can afford and with all of your help, I have found a hobby that I love. The Nikon D5300 I have along with the 18-55, fixed 50, and 55-300 lenses gives me great range for all my needs. I also have a set of extension tubes for macro. I find photography amazing. @@RealWorld Hello Sir, i have a question please. My D3400 sometimes I have pics with a red tint to them?? Not all of them but out of 100 pictures about 10-15 will have a red tint. When this happens my Nikon D3400 will make two photos of the same thing, one pic will look right and other one will be red. How can I offset this or correct this? Thank you for your great teaching of the D3400 Nikon
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Hmmmm - this is a bit odd:). Are you shooting in RAW or JPEG? If shooting in JPEG, I suspect the camera is falsely rendering the final images based on internal settings/sensors. I typically shoot in RAW.
@williamlowery9891
@williamlowery9891 4 года назад
RealWorld Hello, Thank you for your reply. WOW, You are a wonderful teacher. I went back to your first video (“ Got your first DSLR Nikon D3400- now what”) and I completely reset my Nikon D 3400. I started doing what you suggested on your first video (“ Got your first DSLR Nikon D3400- now what”) each time I change the settings I check to see if the problem of the Red Tint image was there. I got all the way up to the settings for Image Quality- JPEG, RAW, or RAW+JPEG. Please note that the pic taking on D3400 have a Red Tint on the hold photo, everting is Red. So my problem came back when I set my D3400 on RAW, or RAW+JPEG. I can only shoot JPEG, I cannot shoot in RAW, or RAW+JPEG. If I shoot in RAW+JPEG I will get two images one looks good but the other one will have a Red Tint. If I shoot in RAW each Photo has a Red Tint and I can’t use them. I have my settings set to the video (“ Got your first DSLR Nikon D3400- now what”). I am shooting in JPEG-Fine. Also, my Nikon D3400 The Firmware Version: C 1.13, LD 2.015, LF 1.00 What can I do to correct this? I like to use the D3400 in RAW if I can. Thank you again, you a great teacher. You're back! The video is like photographer's adventure. It's enjoyable and also inspiring. I like it a lot. By the way, not sure if you guys in the US have some(big) problem with fungus in/on lenses, but recently my two lenses(kit 18-55, 18-140 about 2 years old) had had fungus grew in them(due to a lot of humidity here in tropical zone countries - SE Asia). I had to sent both to the service center for clean out and paid for not so cheap. It was my fault for not knowing how to take good care the them. If you have some tips about how to store lenses in proper way maybe you could share with us on video(if you would like to) Thank you for the video. Keep up the good work! 🙂👍👍👍
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Thanks for the post and glad to be back ... great/Interesting question!:) Various parts of the United States are more humid than others. I live in an area with four distinct seasons and humidity is not too bad with exception to a month or two. Nonetheless, I can relate with the challenge you face:). Do you store the lenses where you spend time and do you find where you spend time humid? The concept is to keep the lenses near you in a temperature controlled environment ... if you are living in a relatively humid free environment so will your lenses:). If you are unable to avoid humidity, I might suggest storing the lenses in a zip lock bag with either dried rice or silica packets ... both will do the trick and keep the lenses free of moisture and thereby free of fungus (fungus needs a moist environment to grow). Might make a quick tip video on this as well:).
@munarong
@munarong 4 года назад
@@RealWorld Now your question back helped me see things clearer that I didn't realize before. My old apartment was kind of bad ventilated. In summer I got humid air, in rain season I got humid + damp (no winter here lol). My room was often times so moisturized, it's even had mold in some corner of the room. In the last two years since I got the camera, mostly all camera and lenses I left them in the bag. Later on, the bag got mildew (I hadn't been aware of it could infect to camera gear) so I washed the bag once, the bag seemed cleaned for months then mildew came back(with all camera gear in it!). that's when I found out a little later that my lenses got fungus. So the whole thing to me, it seems like my old apartment and air quality could be culprits for the source of all mold stuff + leaving camera gear in the mold infected bag. I moved to a new place since the end of last year that is cool and less humid air with better ventilation. Now I temporary stored the lenses in plastic box and will look up for packs of silica gel and some zip lock bag as your suggestion. Thank you for your reply and suggestions. I appreciate it. 😃🙏
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Glad to be of help and I can related with your environment to some extent:). If I lived there, I would consider the same - place the lenses in a large zip lock bag of some sort with good amount of dried rice or silica packets. I used dried rice in the past for various reasons with good success. Both will do the trick:).

We’ve watched you test a lot of camera gear and cameras on your channel. I’m curious what you like to shoot with the most? I just changed to a Fujifilm X-T30 because i loved the nostalgic feeling while using it. I still have my old Minolta and all of those lenses. Also, I absolutely love your videos in the mountains. My first trip there was a year and a half ago and I cant wait to go back.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Ahhhhh yes, the X-T30 ... this is a solid/great mirrorless camera with a throwback look and feel:). Great question as well. I have shot with many cameras over the years. I tend to focus on the D3400 simply because it is entry level, and I want everyone to know it's not necessarily about the gear, rather it's about the photographer's ability to leverage the gear and compose a shot:). I also believe in post processing, and feel it another creative outlet. Tough to pick one one favorite camera as I like bits and pieces from each:).

Very enjoyable video to watch and learn! I hope your staying safe durening the coronavirus pandemic!!! Some very good tips here and you got some great looking shots. I know a trail in Glencoe near Fort William that leads to middle of nowhere and it's so good to walk entire distance it'll take you at least 3 hours and there are great waterfalls so next time I'm taking shots and probably camp out there! I bought the K&F concept carbon fibre travel tripod and I love it. Have you seen the lamcou flexible tripod? It's pretty good. The trail you did here are there many places where you can put up tent or hammock and tarp? To let you know that Nikon D200 I bought last year still works so good for second hand and £100. Hello!I Recently discovered your channel and so glad I did!I am checking out videos to find more about photography, and also to find the best camera for me to enter the world of photography. I gravitate more towards Nikon, and I am in a bit of a loss here... my options so far are the d5300, the d6500, the 7200 as far as Nikon models go, and now I was also checking out a couple of Canon models like the Eos 800d and 80d. Ideally I would have loved for a Nikon model with a weather sealing body, a fully articulated screen and a good tracking video (despite the fact that I am more interested in photography) because having the options is always great and I would like to gain everything I can from my purchase. As comparisons go, I like the photo quality Nikon provides and the video quality (because of its tracking system and flow) of Canon. However, I am afraid I will have to choose in between. Which one would you advise me to get? If there is another option you would like to offer except the ones I mentioned, feel free to offer please. So far I'm looking into DSLRs, because I think they suit me best, however, I haven't really looked into mirrorless cameras, so if there are any suggestions for them as well, also feel free to offer. And last but not least, I've been meaning to ask: are all the photos in the video taken with the basic kit lens 18-55mm of the d3400?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Thanks for the post/questions!:) I see you mention video ... when I see video, I think Canon:). I have shot with both and favor Nikon slightly for photos simply because they removed the anti-aliasing filter for many in their line (the anti-aliasing filter tends to soften images slightly). Canon's STM lenses coupled with their AF system is great for video. If I had to choose from the given cameras, I might consider the Canon 80D (again, thinking about video):). I have shot with various cameras ... some weather sealed and some not. Weather sealing is a bit overrated IMO:). You might also consider the Sony a6600 (mirrorless and loaded with features ... should be solid with video and photos).

How do you compensate for potential over exposure? My challenge with these kinds of shots is always adjust for light and over exposure. One has to be at a slow shutter speed for soft water but it also increases the risk of over exposure.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 2 года назад
The key is to close down the aperture:). Doing so will slow the shutter and reduce the light.

always enjoy your videos! I have been to that church and took the same images. My photography lacks a workflow. I noticed the SS was all over the place. Please tell me what mode you use most of the time and what drives your choice of SS and aperture. Dave from Virginia Beach. (Go Navy)...
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 2 года назад
Thanks for the post/question Dave!:) Appreciate your service!:) I typically leverage aperture priority and manual ISO (set to 100 and will adjust as needed to maintain 1/60th of a second SS). I evaluate the scene as well ... if I want to freeze action, I will push for a faster shutter; if I am taking landscape or some still, I will push to maintain 1/60th of second; if I want to slow the shutter to capture flowing water, I will drive the ISO to 100 and close down the aperture. :)

Which lens would be better for landscape and waterfall photography with Nikon D5300? I have got 18-140 mm, f3.5-5.6 kit lens and 50 mm F1. 8 prime lens. In my location, lots of hills and waterfalls are there, with unmatched beauty. And, now, from your video, I know, I have to get this ND filter. But, for which lens should I buy? Please suggest. It's been awhile since I saw you on. and your videos always inspire me to get out. I do have a question or a suggestion for another video. Have you worked with any fisheye or extreme wide angle lens? I tried the Rokinon 8.5 but it just isn't compat to my D3400 so it's a bunch of guesswork as the light meter in the camera doesn't work and anything has to be done in manual. I am about to get the Nikor 10-20mm lens and give that a try as I have a trip to Rome in the near future and want to get as wide a shot as I can. Again thanks for your videos they help me alot.

Do you think a screen protector is a good thing or a bad thing? Have the Nikon D5600 and sure as heck don’t ever want to damage or scratch the screen so I’m wondering if you have used one before? Pros & Cons??
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 4 года назад
Thanks for the post/question:). I have one on my older D7000 only because it came with it (bought the camera used) and have not used one since. The old on my D7000 is hard plastic and not touch sensitive which is different compared to what you might want for the D5600. Since the D5600 is touch sensitive, you will need a nice/tight/secure laminate of some type. Do I think it is needed ... no:). Is it nice to have ... perhaps. I have used the D5600 along with various other cameras without any screen protectors and never had any issues.

Yes, should not be a problem:). On a BRIGHT sunny day, you might need to close down the aperture all the way along with using an ND filter - still not an issue but be aware of do so in the event the ND filter is not slowing down the shutter enough:).
