Thank you!! - I'm a Nikon shooter with exactly the equipment upon which your video is based and the content matches exactly what I was looking for. It couldn't be better. I particularly like the quiet and concise explanation that was easy to follow. Much appreciated!

I use the SB800's (3) and the SB900's (3) with my Z8. And, I'm really pleased with the outcome of these two older flashes. Saves me a lot of money. What else is great most of all my older Accessories works with the Z8 so far, all the way back to my 10 pin Infrared remote which is about 40 yrs old are more and wired ones too. Haven't had a chance to try my SU and Radio Poppers remote control yet but i feel like they work also with the Z8.

The portion about Commander mode was helpful, I realized it won't let you get into E3 zone if it's in AUTO setting. That may help somebody on here who is stuck finding the settings 'grayed out' and unavailable. Change your mode on the dial to M or U1/U2.

I used to use Nikon's Creative lighting system with my ( many ) Nikon speedlights via the commander function in my D7200. The issue however these days, is fully wireless systems from Godox that use Wi-fi instead of infra red are so cheap and reliable I no longer use Nikon's built in system. Nikons CLS is fine in studio but needing line of sight makes using it in bright conditions unreliable. You can still use it in slave mode allowing a pre flash to activate the off camera flash but I've moved entirely to Godox for my off camera flash needs. Still, I suspect many users may be unaware that this wireless system is built into their camera and requires no further investment if you already own one of Nikon's compatible speedlights. 😊

Great video. I have a question, I am shooting Nikon D3s and D4 bodies. My wireless setup is PocketWizard FlexTT5-Nikon attached to the flash (Nikon SB 5000). Another Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 is mounted on the hot shoe of the camera and the SB-800 on top of that. I can shoot TTL at any shutter speed I want. Questions are: 1) When I put the D4 in Manual Mode, and leave the Flash in TTL mode, I can manage the flash power through Exposure Compensation using the SB-800; but if I have the camera in Manual and put the SB-800 in manual mode, is the flash power (1/8; 1/16; 1/32.....) equal to the exposure compensation when the SB-800 is in TTL?
@photofonz
@photofonz Год назад
Thank you KV. Since you're shooting with the Nikon D4, and if I understand your question correctly, Nikon has an artical regarding Exposure Compensation When Using i-TTL. Nikon says that the D4 & D4S are the first Nikon DSLR to separate flash exposure compensation from the camera’s exposure compensation when using the camera with compatible Nikon Speedlights in i-TTL. Here's the link: www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/products-and-innovation/exposure-compensation-when-using-i-ttl-gets-easier-with-the-d4-d4s.html

Help pls. Can you or anyone please share settings I would need to have my flash mounted on the camera for a bounce? It works great off camera on CMD mode, but doesn't fire anymore when I mount it to the camera (Nikon D750). I'm new to flash. Do my settings have to be different when mounted on the camera versus hand held? thanks

so I have a Nikon D850 (no built-in flash) What do I need to trigger my external speedlight (SB-700). A flash trigger? A master?
@photofonz
@photofonz 3 года назад
A good option to fire your SB-700 would be an SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander or equivalent.

I turned off my built-in flash, but the flash still pops off. How can I get it to not pop off?
@eddyla00
@eddyla00 3 года назад
The flash will pop off, but not illuminating your subject, its actually more of a light pulse which send the signal to the remote flash. However, you may still see the reflection on a reflective surface, but rarely on human skin & face.

Can you use the sb800 off camera with a non nikon camera?
@photofonz
@photofonz Год назад
Yes, I've used it with a Fuji mirrorless and even a point & shoot Fuji camera shooting in SU-4 mode. I set the built in flash to shoot in commander mode which can fire one or more flash units. Here's a YT video that explaines how you can shoot remotely using Nikon's SB-800 and even an older SB-80DX: "Shooting Nikon Speedlights in the SU-4 Mode - No Radio Control Needed!" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZT9jwbXORTE.html

Can i set this to Nikon D3500?
@photofonz
@photofonz 4 года назад
Yes, it should work. Here's what I found: The D3500 can be triggered remotely using the camera's built-in Bluetooth and a compatible Android or iOS smart device that is running Nikon's free SnapBridge app. Yes, it does work with D3500. This is an IR remote. Camera must see the remote to works

The SB800 and SB600 had the worst proprietary hotshoe. Bizarre nobody complained about it.
@rahitilongine3371

I can't do that on my D500 😭
@photofonz
@photofonz 3 года назад
While the D500 does not have an internal flash, you can control a commander on the hot shoe such as an SU-800 commander, a SB-910 or SB-700 flash in Master mode. Other brands will work also, such as Yongnuo or Godox. Here's a link to more info: nikonites.com/d500/34932-how-will-d500-do-commander-mode-no-built-flash.html

@photofonz

@@jsprite123 Unfortunately No. The SB-400 is a great little flash though. I have one and use it on occasion when I want to bounce a little light onto my subject.
