Shop Projects: Mobile Lumber and Plywood Storage Cart

Wall space in my shop is difficult to come by and my garage isn’t even a full clear 8’ in height so I decided to take plywood and lumber storage to a mobile rack. In this video I show you how I designed and built my own custom rolling cart out of inexpensive easily sourced materials and with simply but sturdy joinery. Even fully loaded it is a breeze to move around the shop.

Mike, You built a tank! I really like the details you put into the rack like the lag-bolts and all of the sandwiching you did to stiffen the whole frame-up. I only wish I had the room to keep one of these in my tiny shop. It is only 10'x16' and about a year after building it I wished I had gotten a wider building. I have been planning to build a closet/shed off the back of the shop to house the dust collector and air compressor. For the rest of the back, I was going to put on a covered lumber storage rack. Now that I am cramped I think I will just move the entire back wall out 4-6 feet. I That will give me more floor and wall space and I can still put the DC & AC in a soundproof closet. The lumber can then be stored inside on a mobile rack like yours. I like this video so I will check out your other videos too!

I used your design and have considerable storage on this rack. I did modify the original design a bit. I built internal bracing for greater strength and stability. I also did not have a great need for storing sheet goods, so I added a sloped tray with compartments for storing cutoffs. I’m really pleased with the rack. Thank you. It is quite heavy. I used 5” wheels.

Alot of people might not think the jig is necessary, and it's not, but it's a damn good idea.

This is nicest wood cart I’ve seen yet. I’ve got build one that’s only two feet deep, so I’m really racking my brain to maximize the space. This was very helpful! Subscribed.

Awesome design, really like the use of conduit to reduce wasted space, a lot of other carts are using 2x4 or shelving which just gets pricey. I'll be making one of these. thank you!

Great project. I've watched about a dozen videos and I like this design best so far. Love the idea of the jig for the A-frames.

Thanks Mike for your feedback. I put a lot of thought and effort into this rack and it serves me well in my shop. I have plans for sale on my website if interested (link in video description).

It definitely helped me during the build and ensures the piece of plywood you install at the end is straight.

I wonder, how is that bosh miter doing? I'm about to buy one (next year...yo know, so far away), btw, nice build, gave me some ideas for my shop, I have it all over the place

Thank you! Love this saw, best upgrade for gaining space. If you use the older style rails you have to leave so much wasted space behind the bench. Build quality and engineering is superb, I will be doing a review on it in the near future.

were the carriage bolts necessary over just screwing them together with some all purpose 2.5" construction screws? thinking of building something like this myself nice video thanks!
@briancnc
@briancnc 5 лет назад
For the added strength yes. You could probably get away with screws by adding more though. When fully loaded both sides this thing is very heavy though.

You're mileage will vary. Remember, the longer it keeps you in the shop the longer I keep you away from your other half asking you to build something else

I am assembling your cart and am confused about the diameter of the tubes. The materials list says they are 1/2 inch, but in your video you talk about using 3/4 inch. Which one did you mean?
@briancnc
@briancnc 5 лет назад
Rick, standard 1/2 EMT is what I used on mine, I may have mispoke. 3/4 has almost the same wall thickness and these are such short sections they can hold a lot of material.
@matthewsmith8573
@matthewsmith8573 4 года назад
The conduit is 1/2 inch (specified by inner diameter), and the holes are 3/4 inch (outer diameter of 1/2 inch conduit is just under 3/4 inches, or 11/16, as he mentions in the video).
@ao2092015
@ao2092015 4 года назад
I ended up wrapping the end of the conduit in electrical tape to make the fit more snug.

What’s the foot print
@JoeyGaglioti
@JoeyGaglioti 4 года назад
If you still the 3/4" holes for the pipe 3" deep your only leaving .5" of wood left in that 2x4 it's gotta be weak as hell
@briancnc
@briancnc 4 года назад
Not weak at all, the load is vertical not inboard to the 2x4. Mines been fully loaded for months with no issues, I move it around a few times a week.
@dumbdumber1885
@dumbdumber1885 3 года назад
no way that's less than $100, the six castors alone would cost me close to $100 but then i live in canada so that might be part of the issue lol.

Understandable, I don't even think I could say the same today, lumber prices in the US have skyrocketed with everything else last year.
