Make an easy shop vac gutter cleaning attachment using PVC or any other light weight pipe. This is a great DIY project that can help clean your gutters without getting onto the roof or a ladder.

I just used a Leaf Blower blowing thru a long enough Lightweight Aluminum Gutter/downspout (which I already had). made a U-turn at the top so I could blow debris out of hard to reach gutters up high. worked like a charm

Thanks, very informative. I did not know that there is schedule 20 PVC so that alone made it worthwhile for me. You have a very pleasant demeanor, no bragging, yelling, annoying music, etc., you seem like a great guy to have a beer with. Just the facts, as Joe Friday said. Great job!

This little baby packs a punch for the price (just over 30 bucks). I'm comparing it to an old Craftsman blower that recently died after about 15 years. So far I've used it four times ru-vid.comUgkx9IdbewMd3eOaX3SS_kV4wC73v6yWG2KY and it's done an excellent job. It's light, and it moves leaves and debris very well. It's a little shorter than the craftsman, but it's fairly easy to manage. I don't ever use the front grip (requiring both hands). If I did, it would increase the distance between the blower and the debris, or it would require me to bend over awkwardly. I'm 6' 3", so I just hold it (since it's light enough) with one hand down at my side and it's a perfect fit. It's also back-heavy, making it easy to maneuver up/down/left/right motions of the blower end. As a final perk, I can actually appreciate the safety cord lock feature, since my other blower's lack of a decent one caused my power cord connector to start falling apart, due to all of the pulling, etc. If you're not ready to spend 200 - 400 on a gas leaf blower, and you don't mind messing with a cord 2 to 4 times a month, then this thing is for you.

...thanks for the informative video mate.... I've since made one, and it works a treat.... I had the same issue with the 50mm pipe getting stuck between roof edge & gutter along various sections... I grabbed my heat gun and reshaped the 50mm round pipe to an oval shape ~ 40mm and it fits in perfectly now without any issues what so ever.... I've even made an attachment with a slightly protruding chisel/squareish shaped edge to scrape along the gutter base as it sucks..... again the heat gun worked great to shape the pvc - thanks again mate, cheers

Great video, thank you. I recently had a new roof put on my home and replaced my gutters. I had 5 inch gutters and went with a 6 inch gutter to give myself more room to work when cleaning the gutters with this method. I also hope the larger gutters will handle the water better. Thank you again.

Thanks for the sched 20 whole house vacuum 2" pipe suggestion. I found mine at local elect supply store for $6 for 8' section. The extra pieces, unions and elbows, were about $1 each. The weight difference made it so much easier in reaching second story gutters. I had been using a telescoping pool pole attached to extra shop vac hoses, looped at the business end, but it got pretty heavy. However, the 2" sched 20 pipe kept getting clogged at the suction end due to large/wet leaves so I switched to blowing out the gutters instead. A little messy but ground cleanup is no different that when I would climb on the roof (2/12 pitch) AND is so much safer. I will now be switching to my gas back pack blower for a air source as it doesn't require dragging the shop vac and power cord around the house. BTW, I also gave up on those downspout gutter screen inserts that clog almost as soon as installed and rely on a homemade screening cover made of 1/4" holed wire mesh. It measures about a foot in length and 1 " high. Might allow more fines to get through at roof level so I installed an inline flexible downspout diverter/screen close to the ground. About $6 from Lowes or HD, they can be checked and cleared before the fines can clog my underground system. The only other alternative I have considered is moving somewhere with no trees!

Great idea, I just did this today. I have a 2 story house and 2 areas at each corner that always get clogged. I used schedule 40 with 2, 5 feet lengths coupled together and then shimmied about 4-5 rungs up a ladder to reach. It was kinda heavy however I found I could get up the ladder with the pipe and hook it into the gutter and leave hanging while I get the end of the shop vac and hook it to the end of the pvc. Also have a couple of areas of single story guttering so just disconnect one of the 5 ft sections and do it from the ground. Nice project, thanks for sharing, may look into the schedule 20 and a better coupling to make it a little more solid..

On the short end that is inside your gutters, just use a heat gun till soften then flatten the fist 3 or 4 inches about 1/2 inch. It will then clear the overhanging roofing.

I was just cleaning my gutters yesterday and wondering if I could use a shop vac because my trees are sweet gum trees. As you can imagine my gutters are full of those little sticker balls. I have one side gutter left to do and now it's going to be much easier than trying to dig those out by hand!!!

if you have trouble with the pipe fitting between the roof material and the gutter. Heat up the end section og PVC with a heat gun till it is just soft and squash it flat till it fits nice. . carving the end away with a hole saw is a good thing too ..... do this before you cut the pipe to length

Good idea...Every year I need to clean gutters at least 3 times and often 4 times due to the varying times the different trees lose their leaves. To have a person clean my gutters it typically costs $150 to 175.00!! ( home is two story) I also have them rinse the gutters as well to wash the silt down. I think this is definitely worth a try -especially as I think another improvement to your idea (in my application) would be to run my garden hose through it. Design a type of clamp or inside reducer to secure the hose nozzle like the small brass jet nozzles. Perhaps someone might have an idea how I can do that. Many thanks, I enjoy your tips!

at the end of your pipe where it touches the bottom of the gutter you should either cut the tip off diagonally or cur a concave out of it with the two lower tips toward the shingle side and the other top toward the longer pipe side so that the upside down U is open left and right to suck leaves in

I'm thinking to make this tool with 3" cardboard core tubes 48" long. It is usually found in signs or printing shops. A few can be stuck together without tilt weight problems. The join can be made with a piece of the same tube. They are very sturdy and lightweight. I know that because I work in a printing shop and already made the test with 4 tubes. The only downside I see is the dirty gutter has to be dry because the tubes are made of cardboard.

You didnt show how you joined your pipe to the shop vacuum inlet. Theres a big difference in diameter. My shop Vax is 32mm and you are going from 2" (50mm). Also this big drop in diameter is gonna be a problem for blockages. I am also looking at other shop vacuums, and they are about 35mm standard ID.
