As food inflation continues to persist, some shoppers are getting creative with the way they shop for groceries and plan meals. The Wall Street Journal reports consumers are cutting down on eating out, leaning more on coupons and changing the kind of food they eat. Heather Haddon, the co-writer of that Wall Street Journal story, joined CBS News to discuss.

@@chrisbammer4946 Hi. the people that are greedy don't want to solve or change that. They enjoy their lifestyles. They say the care, and I'm sure most of them do! But they care more about themselves. How do we change corporate greed? Great question. Solving it, means those that HAVE, need to humble themselves. Give to the needy. I doubt that will happen. One recent example: Walmart CEO's bought up Visio for 2.3 Billion dollars. Why - for the advertisement, market access. Meanwhile, Walmart has been cutting associate (hourly workers) benefits. Walmart's 4th quarter earnings were better than they forecasted. Yet they are cutting part time worker hours in their stores right now! In states like Massachusetts, where Health insurance is mandatory, these part-time associates have to buy health insurance, or be covered under someone else's. Those that have to buy it, the cost is about $500.00 a month, just for health insurance! How do we solve this? Maybe by first, outing those that take more than their share, while their flock goes hungry!

After watching the whole interview in its entirety, people are really blowing something out of proportion- yes, I agree if a random rich person said “feed the poors cereal for dinner” that’s terrible. A CEO of a cereal company saying “you should eat cereal for more meals” is akin to Bob Iger saying you should go see Disney movies every week. Obviously they’re going to try to sell their own product, what do you honestly expect?
@shad0wCh8ser
@shad0wCh8ser 3 месяца назад
@@BichaeldeAngelo If you look into it, a majority of the cereals are bad for you and many ppl are lactose intolerant. It's also the dumbest thing you can say to staving ppl, tone deaf for sure. It would be more akin to a supplement CEO telling ppl to skip meals and eat their vitamin supplements than Iger telling you to watch Disney movies. There's real and immediate health implications to that statement. And it's surprising how much ppl don't know about nutrition bc something like a sweet potato is more vitamin/mineral rich per cost than cereal. Cereal is mostly sugar. You can buy like 5lbs of potato and a pack of meat vs 1 box of cereal + milk for the same price and you will def feel more full. And if you're that broke, start planting. LOL Seed are $2.

Want to know the real reason? You might want to sit down for this. I worked at a high tech company that specialized in helping grocery stores increase their profits. They did this by using data they collect from your club card purchases. Using this data, they calculate the optimal price. Gone are the days of 99 cents. Today, it’s $1.03 or $1.12. They know what price you will pay. They know what price you won’t. Even you don’t know what is happening. So yea, we know it’s more expensive than before but we haven’t gotten to the point that we just don’t buy. They won’t let us get there.

Do you realize how percentages work? The margins are the same, when costs go up profit also goes up to keep the same percentage of profit thus as inflation occurs the flat total number goes up higher than it was before while the margins remain stagnant. Therefore the profits aren't the highest in history the dollars just have the lowest value in history. The problem isn't greed it's the endless printing of money that the government is addicted to that's causing the problem but you expect the providers in our society to fall on their swords so you don't have to deal the consequences of government mismanagement

Yes, what the first person who responded to your comment is correct. Just to add onto it, prices are set by supply and demand. The increased money supply means the demand increases which results in higher prices. This is how prices have always been set. Its not a coincidence that prices have risen greatly as inflation has risen greatly. They go hand in hand.

The real problem is : Wages not keeping up with the rise in cost of living . As The US Dollar decreases in value the prices of everything must rise , but one area of the situation is not following at the same rate and that is wages . The economy would not be as bad if wages went up because people would have money to spend . In the 1950s a family with 2 children could have a nice home and a car plus a pension and benefits with just 1 full time paycheck at a local factory or store , and they could still afford 1-2 weeks vacation every year . Over time , as businesses started getting really big places like Sears lobbied to get part time employment laws changed and BAM !!! pensions in the private sector started to disappear so that Stock Holders could see a higher profit margin , next they went after benefits like health insurance , after that they went after wages . Companies celebrated an employee who stayed with the company for many years back then , now they don't care about you or the service that they give the public just as long as they can show more profit . What they don't understand is : if people don't have money to spend the economy will go right down the tubes just like back in the late 30s .

@Nisa-gm5wg 3 месяца назад
People will still spend more even if their wages increase. We have to fix our behavior with money first. . Ever heard of little money, little problems and big money, big problems? People need to live on less than they make, get rid of debt ( might have to pick up a side job/ hustle to get it paid off), actual budget and plan. Then when the debt is paid off and you have some extra money please don’t create new debt.

It's not mere "creativity," it's actually just relying on the old ways of life to survive 😬 Finding cheaper ways to get roughly the same nutrition (rice & beans over meat for protein), keeping a tight thought-out budget (planning meals a month in advance), keeping home gardens, and making sure you don't buy excess ("checking their pantries so they're not buying duplicates" & "they're only buying what they really need") is not some new modern phenomenon.

Yep try not to feed the greed. I diy my own stuff as much as possible versus paying high prices I utilize coupons and sales. Make my own dang mayo, pickles, broth, dry mixes, soups, sauces, dressings, and ECT. If it's too much it sets on the shelf or I see who has it cheaper or figure out replacements ECT. We've always shopped around sales utilizing store cards and coupons. I keep a working pantry and when stuff is on sale we stock up as much and as cheaply as possible. As someone else mentioned casseroles, anything to stretch your meal. No aversions to eating or freezing leftovers. We make our own sausage breakfast and Italian with on sale roast or ground meat. Got fruit on sale this past evening five pounds of apples and dehydrated them and four pounds of strawberries also dehydrated half. Last time I got strawberries I made jam twice, to put a dollop in homemade yogurt or my muffin mix. We do a lot of our own baking too. We never eat out. We've cut back on everything well before everyone had to. Heck we were social distancing from people before it even was a thing. It's weird in a way, we were ahead of all this before it happened. Being frugal has kinda been a way of life for us a game almost. Last evenings groceries were a 72% savings. We spent $42.00 at that store we got five 30.6 oz Maxwell house coffees, two 18 count eggs, ten pounds of potatoes, five pounds apples, four pounds strawberries and two Cornish hens. I always leave Grocery Outlet with a FULL grocery cart of GOOD stuff and I don't even spend $100. They have so many snacks and foods for $1, $1.50 and $2. I really hope they'll continue to keep their low prices.

I get a cardboard tray from the produce section, fill it with only absolute necessities and my bill was like $300 for the month but I also eat gluten free food which is beyond ridiculous to start with.

Instead of going to fast food places and restaurants, go to hospital cafeterias. They have full meals for under $5, sometimes with a drink.☺️

I would never go to the local hospital for food, I used to work as a janitor and cleaned those nasty places. You would think they would be cleaner they are not they are nastier. The health department will not close them down nor, do they fine them. I've been is some that had cockroaches all over the place. This was not an inner city place it's a smaller regional hospital, if I have to go into the hospital people will be bringing me my food from the outside.

True. I quit buying Chobani yogurt when it was nearly doubling in price. Then only buy again when it was back to the near normal price. Get generics in the meantime. I think more folks need to pay attention, not just grab stuff, and vote with their dollars.

People are creatures of habit. They pick up the same 99% of things they always do regardless of price. I now keep a freezer and pantry list and buy on sale. Then I reverse meal plan with the things I already have, adding in items. I definitely notice a change when I’m keeping tabs on my grocery budget versus when I’m not.

As much as I detested having to weed the garden as a kid and help with canning, I certainly am glad I learned how to do it. Looking into indoor gardening options like hydroponic vertical growing towers for salad greens and cooking herbs for year round food. $4 + for a bag of salad greens that may or may not be on recall or spoiled is not something I am willing to put up with.

@@monicaluketich6913 I was actually considering converting like an old china hutch with the glass front doors into a system of some kind. Mount the grow lights on the top of it have a mist system or something. 🤷‍♀️ seems like a fun project to embark on. In the meantime I'm doing okay with my plant pots and decent sized windows. But am looking for a longer term more sustainable and efficient and self contained way to go about it. I always was intrigued by the drop down hydroponic garden over the kitchen island in one of the back to the future movies. Where the plants were growing in the attic.

We need to a few things to voice our concerns. 1. Only buy essentials. That includes no cereals, chips, cookies, etc. your waistline will thank you for it 2. Dine out less and if you do visit your ma and pa shop 3. If you absolutely dont need it, dont buy it. We...have to change how we live and that will "help" change corporations market products and prices to us.

On the bright side diabetes and overeating will probably go down a bit. I've lost a few pounds. I went from from 3 meals a day to 1 sometimes 2. Anyway packaged foods and snacks are extremely expensive. Large bag of Doritos are more air than they used to be and almost 7$ when they were 3$ and don't get me started on cereals. Haven't had any in over 5 months.

@farmtoplate123 Sweetheart, my health comes first and foremost. I mix up my own taco seasoning as everyone should who is on a budget and concerned about their health. I also make my own chicken bone broth, which is much more flavorful and healthier, containing protein and collagen. If you are on that tight of a budget and want a versatile complete protein, get yourself some quonia and use it in place of rice. Much higher nutrientional profile. Just make sure to rinse it very well before cooking to get rid of bitterness. I would use cheese wraps in place of tortilla shells to cut carbs, up protein, and save a step with shredding cheese. Very few people in the US have missed a meal.
