The topics in my videos are based on questions that I am asked from time to time and are meant as a guide. It is important to consult the wiring regulations for other requirements that apply.

Please see link to my next video: Short circuit calculation walkthrough ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kw0SUZGL0Ic.html which includes a worked example of a short circuit current and fault current calculation.

Thanks. When I was in China, we based on the GB and IEC codes. We calculated all the single-ground short currents for every nuclear power project and compared them with the Voltage drop when long-distance low voltage distribution. But right now I am in Canada, and I could not find any Engineer calculating single-phase short current. They recognize Voltage drop data when the circuit is too long. It seems they don't know sometimes breaker (I-instantaneous) settings should be smaller than short currents which happened at the end of the circuit. And single phase to ground short current data makes the cable fit for Vd at the same time. I hope it might happen just at my company.

Hi James, you got me a bit confused by stating initially that the ipscc would always be the larger value, and then contradicting yourself by stating the ipfc would always be the larger value. I understand the higher resistance caused by smaller csa cable, but the contradictions got me muddled up. Thanks though, for the video.

Hi, Thank you for your comment. The short circuit current (Isc) will be higher than the fault current (Ipf). However, when recording the Pfc on an electrical certificate, there is only one box to enter the Pfc, and we are required to enter the higher of the 2 readings. So even though the box on the certificate is labeled Pfc, we would test both fault current and short circuit current and enter the highest value (which would be the short circuit current). I hope this helps. Kind regards James
