Dec.03 -- Kynikos Founder & President Jim Chanos says people are doing really dumb things with their money, driving up share prices of companies based on narratives that are too good to be true. He also discusses his "painful" short in Tesla Inc. before the electric vehicle maker is added to the S&P 500, as well as his bet against IBM, which is his highest conviction short. He adds the Biden administration will not be anti-markets. Chanos speaks exclusively with Scarlet Fu on “Bloomberg Front Row.”

My basic take is that Tesla is a tremendous company, but perhaps someone overvalued. My beef with Chanos is that he’s been making completely bogus claims about Tesla for years. It’s one thing to say the company is overvalued, it’s another thing to go below the belt and talk about executive turnover, “competition is coming”, and all the other tropes that have been completely discredited. I actually agree with a lot of what Chanos said about certain areas of the marketing being overvalued. Just think he’s been really off base about Tesla.
@antonystringfellow5152
@antonystringfellow5152 3 года назад
@@xyzzy4567 I agree with Chanos about TSLA being overvalued. I think it's been overvalued for at least the past 12 months. A great company with probably a very bright future - just overpriced imo. The main risks with shorting a company like TSLA are, a) Short-term stock prices are largely based on faith, b) Growth stocks grow so the longer you hold the short, the more likely you'll end up being on the wrong side of the trade. Any shorting is very risky as you can lose many times you're stake but there's a HUGE difference between shorting a company that's committing fraud or who's market is shrinking and shorting a growth stock that you think is simply overpriced.
@violarulez
@violarulez 3 года назад
if only he had waited until now to take his position, maybe he would have a chance. although it's possible their eventual profits will catch up to the extreme overvaluation right now. tesla seems so dominant now, but also, barely any people drive electric vehicles, it is a nascent industry.... think of what we'll see in ten years. so I think it is a mistake to see tesla's continued dominance as a given. My issue really is that you have to be a contrarian POS to go out of your way to boldly take this position when so many other companies are clearly more likely to fail, or have CEOs without a proven track record, etc.
@skadistyr8449
@skadistyr8449 3 года назад
@@violarulez I think the main problem here is, that other companies catched up. Audi E-Tron, Porsche Taycan are attacking the Model S, then there are Hyundai Ionic/ Kona / ID 3. All these cars are cheaper than a Model 3. ATM, there is no direct competitor to the model 3, but this market is small. Why compete with the best technology, when you can beat the "best" technology in all other (price-) fields. My opinion on Tesla is, that the space that it can occupy is to small for its market evaluation. The market it hast is worth max. 30 billion dollars. I forgot the model Y, ah yes, there are Volvo XC40, Polestar, BMW IX3, Hyundai Ionic 5. And all of these are great cars. One comment towards Audi/Porsche vs. Tesla. The Tesla has the better performance, but the german cars are on another quality level. If I spend 100k, some flaws with Tesla cars are not acceptable. But, I would also not spend 100k on a car...

It must be understood that valuations are RELATIVE and should not be looked at in a vacuum. When equities are overvalued according to commonly-used metrics, it does not mean a correction is imminent. People are not going to take cash out of equities to shove under their mattresses. If the risk/return on other asset classes is relatively less attractive than that of equities, stocks will continue to do well. It is all about the relative risk premium spread. Even if equities are overvalued, a large spread will keep money in the stock market until the spread lessens.
@fendermon
@fendermon 3 года назад
Interesting post Mark. What is a risk premium spread? Thanks.
@marka7903
@marka7903 3 года назад
@@fendermon Hi fendermon. Consider risk premia for a moment. Risk premia is the risk (measured as volatility - since there is no other way) and average return function of each asset class. The asset classes with lower risk premia, such as short-dates treasuries, offer a lower average return. While assets like equities, which have much higher volatility and payout a higher average return over time, have a higher risk premia by their nature. The relative risk premium "spread" is the difference in the risk premia between the asset classes. If the spread between, say for instance bonds and equities, becomes quite small, you will see an outflow from equities and an inflow into bonds, as investors can almost achieve the same returns for a much lower level of risk. The opposite can also happen - the spread can be so wide that even though equities are overvalued, the risk/return profile on equities might be far more attractive

True. Solar City was about to go bankrupt before Elon did a bailout. And even though Solar City has only been a liability for Tesla, so far both Solar City and Tesla shareholders have been rewarded, so they didn’t complain and this late in the game have no basis to complain. They all had time to gain 1000% and get out. It will be interesting to see if the right people are put in place to get the market back in balance. Offer 5 year 10% APR CDs like back in the late 80s and see how much stupid money moves out of TSLA and into safety. It’s absolutely crazy how many are willing to risk losing all their savings just because there is a temporary period were interest earned is slightly less than inflation. Covid, unemployment, foreclosures, medical bills. It’s all about to get crazy as we enter the deep cold winter and people will be gathered inside crowded placed. Who will keep buying luxury cars when nobody has extra money? Governments are starting to push the welfare burden onto those who have small investments like a rental house, and allowing tenants not to pay without fear of eviction. Chanos knows Tesla is still not stable. Even Elon knows it. Once VW, Ford and a few others kill the ZEV credit market, Tesla is back to losing money each quarter again. Only now they have loses spread out among more factories. Many TSLA holders will be posting “Buying the dip, this is a great sale”, while actually selling some hoping the new Robinhood investors are still buying.

Even when the financial markets go tits up again in say 2022/3 he’ll have some private stash of millions to pay for his Bentley and golf club memberships. It’s how the world works and WSB are taking these big guys down now but just wait, sure enough, apart from a handful of lads who actually made money on GME the regular folk like someone’s granny and you and I will loose our shirts. Remember Dec 2017 and Bitcoin ......

This is why I think he is not a good hedge fund manager. He should have given up on shorting Tesla along time ago but he is too stubborn and is still shorting Tesla.
