Christy and Alonso are unusually mixed on "Shortcomings." Longtime actor Randall Park makes his feature directorial debut with this indie comedy based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine. Justin H. Min stars as the miserable manager of an arthouse movie theater who begins to explore his romantic interests when his longtime girlfriend (Ally Maki) moves to New York for a few months. Co-starring Sherry Cola, Debby Ryan, Tavi Gevinson,Jacob Batalon and Sonoya Mizuno. In theaters now.

Big fan of the graphic novel and Adrian Tomine. Appreciate Christy acknowledging the story’s specificity. As a San Francisco Japanese American, this was such a fun watch. Not all movies are made for you, and that’s ok. But this one felt made for me and it felt great

It's not enough for the point of the movie to have the central character be loathsome. The trick is to have said character be both loathsome and yet compelling enough for you to want to follow him. If the loathsome central character is somebody you don't want to spend a lot of time following, then the movie ain't working Every movie has a "point". The question is whether said "point" is executed well. It's not automatically enough just for said "point" to be clear.

4:22 "Or maybe it's because I've been this guy to some extent or other." Word Alonso, I feel you.

I loved the movie. I watched it a few times already. I thought that Ben had more layers than just being overly critical and insecure. Beneath these flaws, there are some characteristics of him that make me not hate him completely. Like the way he cares for his best friend Alice, or when he shows his vulnerabilities to her, or his struggles with not knowing what to do with his passion for cinema. I love that the movie made the characters relatable by portraying each main character with flaws and awkwardness in a very genuine way. It made them more believable and human. The subtleties of showing his insecurities about being an Asian but not in touch with Japanese heritage enough (not speaking the language or mistakenly saying “internment camp” and corrected by his Korean American friend) added a depth to Ben’s character.

Thanks for the review. I’ve been hearing mix things about this since it screened at Sundance. Might not see it in theatres but will try to check it out on VOD.

I saw this movie and although there was not really anything unique about the film, it's a fine film. I can't really recommend people to go watch this film immediately, but I can recommend people check it out once it's available on streaming.

Alonso, if the point of the movie was to have you dislike him and it seemed to do a great job based on what you said then there you have it.

I don't know... I don't like movies with unlikable protagonist. I'm not sure I can get over that hump. But otherwise, I want to support Asian American creators. Why did they make him so unlikable?

Because it’s realistic, I think their are a decent amount of younger eastern and southern asian young men with similar mind sets.

Agree with Alonzo. Reminded me so much of “Greenberg”. Miserable, astringent protagonist. Wouldn’t want to see it again but respect the attempt on some level. Would prefer a movie about the Alice character.

I just watched the trailer. I agree with Alonzo. Seems like he's being a d-bag for the sake of a plot point instead of being a genuine person with issues, but I haven't actually seen it so what do i know.

I enjoyed it enough, but I feel like I've seen it a lot. Just like Alonzo everytime I started to get behind this guy he does something to make his character unlikable.
