Great comparison! I'd appreciate an updated version of this comparison once every single year, so I don't need to reevaluate my tools constantly. :)

Thx much glad you enjoyed it! All these software tools constantly change and I have more than 1,000 videos on my channel so it really depends on time and if it makes sense for me.

Thank you very much for this video. Unlike some others, you seem to go to some effort to be objective, reasonable, and fair, and I for one truly appreciate that. I have seen both versions of this video. As soon as I saw the kdenlive interface, I got excited, because years ago, before I REFUSED to keep using Windows, I used the Sony video editor and the interface was very similar. Since then I'd gotten out of video editing altogether, but now I am getting back to it with my daughter and I needed something for Ubuntu. But then in this video, when you talked about adding voice over and subtitles, that closed the deal right there. I can't even imagine not having those two tools. Thank you for saving me a lot of time testing, experimenting, and choosing.

I am a beginner. I would like to get a better understanding of how powerful or what the limits of this software are in order to determine whether it is the right one for me. So, could you drop the link of any professionally edited video in Shotcut, please? Thank you so much. 😃😃😃

I've been struggling with a few limitations of Shotcut that are just too frustrating for me to continue using it. Currently (May 2021), rearranging video tracks is impossible in Shotcut without editing the XML project file manually in a text editor. As well as this, it was impossible for me to copy keyframe properties from one section of a clip to another. Also, Shotcut is just painfully slow on low-end hardware (although I need to investigate proxy clips). I feel like it has some significant issues with it's rendering pipeline (maybe they're rendering bottom-up rather than top-down)

Yup I see what you're saying and thankfully we do have many great video editing options out there.

My experience with these editors so far has been: Openshot--looks like a gigantic mess of icons and sliders that mean nothing to me and overall is visually hard to interpret. Tried taking a batch of files and placing on timeline, they came in on top of each other and backwards (last file first, first file last), unlike Kdenlive and Shotcut which lined them up all neatly in order. Too hard, click out. Kdenlive--best user interface, most intuitive menus and options and such, easiest to jump into, but frequent render crashes and gigantic output and transcode of imported file sizes. Without the render problems so far it seems like it'd be no contest. Shotcut--somewhat like Kdenlive, but where in the world are all the features and options that are so easy to find in Kdenlive? And what in the world do the icons in the upper right corner of parts of the window mean? Who came up with this user interface and what in the world were they thinking? Of the three, Kdenlive so far has me spending the least amount of time figuring out how to use the program, and the most actually editing something. But then when I want to render, it may or may not work, and if it does work, the file is gargantuan, far beyond anything I've used before. Shotcut's "best" option for transcode is like half the size of Kden live, and Kdenlive's "intermediate" option yields a file bigger than its "lossless" option! What??? So basically I want to use Kdenlive, because it seems easy, but then I get stuck, so I have to try something else, so I am now looking at Shotcut as the contender. (Also tried Videopad, since I was already using Photostage for some things and they seem to basically be two different packages with the same core, but its limitations outweigh the potential benefits.)

Great summary and points! I do find myself using Kdenlive the most as things are more intuitive and familiar for me.

I have been enjoying your series on Shotcut, but which VDO editor works well with putting text on 3D 180 VDO? I found a vdo using Shotcut but there has to be a better way. Thank you

Thx much! I'd recommend trying out Davinci Resolve if you can (Windows, Mac versions work best) for more advanced features.

Having an exporting issue with Shotcut. Running the latest version on Windows 10 (64) but my projects seem to be exporting in a 4:3 resolution, just playing in a square box in the center of my computer screen...any thoughts?
@GeekoutdoorsBrand
@GeekoutdoorsBrand 3 года назад
Hmmm Lunar not entirely sure but did you check resolution on export settings and is this happening on all projects? And if so, I don;t know as I haven't experienced this myself.
@lunardawnimages6838
@lunardawnimages6838 3 года назад
@@GeekoutdoorsBrand Thanks so much for responding...it only seems to happen with footage shot from my mobile, not with DSLR footage. I assumed I was using default settings on exports but looking closer the settings are as follows...MP4 with a resolution of 1920x1080, aspect ratio 16:9, 25.000 fps, deinterlacer-YADIF, interpolation-bilinear and parallel processing checked. I hope I have given the right info...and that I've got something wrong as this problem just recently surfaced. Love your channel and the content!

Everybody's use case especially when it comes to hardware so I'd recommend installing and trying them since it's free and see if it works for you.

Hi, I'm a new SUB here on your channel. I've tried almost every editor & I would say I am in the middle range of skill level & purpose of use, where most of my videos are quite simple to intermediate videos, the percentage of me creating videos that are more intermediate-advanced is not that high. So originally I used Sonic Foundry Vegas (yes before it was Sony & Magix). I've since used Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve (very quick stint), the basic editors like Imovie & Win Movie Maker, to the newer quick editors Movavi Video Editor, Filmora & I even used Adobe Premier (another quick stint). I'm sure I've tried a few other ones but I won't list them here. So the reason for my comment is two things: (1) Can you pretty please do a review on Vegas and (2) Which editor do you think is the closest to Vegas and has the closest workflow, usability and features to Vegas? I am also a Mac user so that's another hurdle for me. The timeline and workflow of Vegas are where I excel the highest & fastest as I am also an Acid Pro & Soundforge user. The timeline of Acid Pro (Audio Editor) & Vegas is exactly the same & I've been using this for 20+ years. One feature I like about Vegas is when you drop the media video, it keeps the video & audio together and not split it up like on Davinci Resolve & Final Cut. I really can't stand that lol (I know a lot of you like that or are used to it). Much appreciated in advance thanks bro! Keep up the great work! FYI - I will give Kdenlive a go though :)

You're welcome Errol! Unfortunately I've not used Sony Vegas (now Magix) and I don't use a Mac I use Linux Mint.

Keeping video and audio together should be achieved by group/ungroup functionality in any editor. Let me know which editor you eventually decided on. I like the interface of Kdenlive.

How to move a whole video track above or below another track in kvinlive?

If I recall, you're not currently able to move tracks in Kdenlive. Although Shotcut has made an update to do this and I made a video below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UY9HKqgOJhc.html
