I heartily concur ! I too had never heard of this TV Western till coming across it here at RU-vid. I looked it up online & found out it ran in syndication for two seasons (1959-1961). Always liked Scott Brady & his brother, fellow actor Lawrence Tierney.

A lot of these movies are just great. I do like most of them. Brings back memories.

Slade was usually the big ladies' man. He carried more big guns than just the one in the opening credits. He really knew how to pull all the triggers with the gals. Surprised he didn't take it to at least third base with that hot little number played by Sue Ann Langdon. Vavavaroom ! Also loved the 1950's style 77-Sunset Strip jazz music applied in a 19th century western town setting.

The TV Western "The Deputy" (which ran for those same two seasons: '59-'61) also had a jazzy soundtrack that made liberal use of the electric guitar. I looked up the background of those two programs online & found out the same studio (Revue) produced both shows. So the producers obviously shared the same person responsible for the music.

@@jubalcalif9100 Good observation. Check out The Tall Man, another goofy series and, as I recall, one that used jazzy electric guitar twangs in the theme, at least. That series disappointed me. Most of the talent and plots were mediocre. It'd be interesting to see if Tall Man was in that same production company portfolio.

Anybody notice this is a Western scored with "Peter Gunn"-style "crime jazz" music?
@songanddanceman100

Haha! And you have defined a genre or Jazz - "Crime Jazz"! Oh - too late. Someone already did. But you nailed it for 'Old West Crime Jazz'!! :)

***** Apparently, the idea was that this was supposed to be a detective show in western clothes, rather than a conventional western. Composer Gerald Fried suggested using private-eye jazz, and Revue's musical supervisor Stanley Wilson and series producer Nat Holt went along with the idea. (Revue and its parent company MCA later bought Universal Pictures, and Revue became Universal Television.)

I certainly noticed it ! Very unusual for a TV Western ! Though I recenlty watched an episode of "Shotgun Slade" (which aired the same two seasons as "The Deputy") here at RU-vid & it had the same type of jazzy score with the liberal use of an electric guitar. They were both produced by the same studio (Revue) but had different musical directors.

These TV westerns were all the rage around 1960. I don't know why. I remember an image of SGSlade walking down the exterior stairs on a boarding house or some place. That image has stuck witgh me for miore than 50 years. Gonna look for it.

I don't recall claiming the phrase "crime jazz" as original; I quoted it because it's already a recognizable term. But I have to give you the credit for "old west crime jazz," perfect!

Jeff Missinne I didn't know you DIDN'T invent the phrase until I was in the middle of my post and then went to Wiki! I'll accept the credit for "Old West Crime Jazz"! Thx!

Geeze, have wardrobe make the crippled gunslinger's right sleeve extra long. It would at least give the illusion that there wasn't a hand under that leather cup.

Music is bizarre for a western.just doesn't fit.sounds like something from Peter gunn or a B-Movie noir film.
