I lived a couple of years in US and now I am in Canada. As an immigrant from mainland China with family/children, I would prefer Canada to raise my kids (safety, free health care, cheaper education) but I do feel US has tons of more career/economical opportunities.
@MyLittleGreenHairdedMermaid
Yep agree, but for those added opportunities for careers and the ability to make more money.... there are a few things Canadians will tend to consider: you have more everyday violence, lack of job security, and healthcare costs a lot in america between paying insurance companies, your deductible and a portion of taxes goes towards healthcare too

I guarantee you it is better to raise your children elsewhere. Then when they are adults they can try to find a job in the us if the usd exchange rate is worth it. Trust me as an Asian American, growing up in the us means it is more likely your kid will hate themselves, their culture and their own people unless they live in an enclave and thats still no guarantee. If you can also have your kids spend time in the mainland as well so they can really be dual cultured. Do not have your children essentially strive to be second class citizens in the west.

The “free” healthcare here is virtually non-existent. If you have a serious health issue, you’re basically on your own, as the ludicrous wait time for almost any intervention will dissolve years of your health span.

I've been living here in Edmonton Canada for 8 years. From Vietnam btw. Honestly, I find the pace in Canada is pretty slow in comparison with America. Most people are really nice but some are very discriminating, especially in small town/rural area. It's pretty boring in Canada, I find. Not many concerts and tours, tournaments, etc. I'm thinking of moving to America for career growth but the violence against Asian community gives me chill...

I'm a completely white washed Chinese person born and raised in a tiny northern town in Alberta, and I think people who think Canada is boring has it wrong. The fact that the weather changes so much makes life interesting and busy. Since summer is short you try and cram all your activities within the small time frame, while in winter where most people find boring, you need to fully embrace it. You must wear warm clothing like base layers, and do winter activities such as hockey, skiidoing, snowboarding, skiing, skating, ice fishing, etc. Winter is also a nice excuse to just be lazy and cozy indoors to watch movies, enjoy your pets, enjoy your home, do your indoor activities such as video games, reading, and painting miniatures even. I am becoming a hunter as well to provide my own meat (hunting season is during fall/winter), which will keep me super busy. Canada obviously has lots of nature, thus you must embrace it and take advantage of it to keep you busy. However, if outdoors activities will never suit you, then Canada is not for you
@TekAngRugbeeProp
@TekAngRugbeeProp Год назад
I am in total agreement with you. It is how you make the best out of what you have. Grew up in Indonesia, but I prefer the weather in Canada. Having the four weathers actually great and helps us to break our lives from just a monoton way. I find that I am normally very active outdoor from Spring to Fall with Rugby and various other things, as you mentioned enjoying the nature via camping and road trips, and when the weather turns colder in the winter, it is a time to rest and stay at home most of the time. In term of food... is there any other better way to enjoy different food if not because of the weather? Hot pots are awesome to warm up the body in the winter and obvious bbq is great in the warmer weather as we can enjoy the outdoor at the same time.
@andywu8151
@andywu8151 Год назад
@@TekAngRugbeeProp In winter, the cuisine I eat does not change besides bbq outdoors. I enjoy hotpot in winter just as much as I do in the summer. I would say people in Canada cook more often than going out in comparison to asian countries, so during the winter, I like to make comfort food like soups. I recommend learning Ukrainian cuisine since it is very homey (borscht, perogies and sausage, cabbage rolls etc), I'm a big fan of soup so I would say I make lots of that and slow cook recipes in the oven. I also like smoking meat more than bbqing which doesn't require me to be outside the whole time. Just a summary I say look into Ukrainian and German food during the winter, I like to buy wild meat as well during the summer and freeze it for the winter. With less activities to do in the winter, you have more time to make full course meals which Ukrainian and German cuisine requires. You can also use the extra time to make slow cook recipes in the oven or in a smoker. Summer you can just grill some meat on the bbq, make a salad, and you're basically done, but in winter you have to put the time in to make the cozy comfort foods. Hope this helps!

Canadian here. Also I’m a white woman married to an Asian man. By far, I think it’s better for Asian men to live here in my opinion. Canada as a whole is more open to people from all over the world, and everyone knows that “being Canadian” can mean many different things. I was born and raised and still live in Toronto and I am used to diverse environments. It’s good because my husband and I can get Korean food and western food (or any food!) any time we want, and to give you a personal testimony, I have relatives that live north of Toronto and they love my husband’s Galbi jjim (Korean braised short ribs)! But of course, going to any country requires research and a lot of work, it’s essentially a game of trade offs and things you value the most. I wish anyone making that journey the best of luck, because it’s not easy! Have a great day guys 👍🏻😊

My maternal grandfather asked this question over 60 years ago. He started his search in NYC and didn't find it all that great to raise a family. He fell onto Toronto and started roots here. Our taxation and lack of opportunity in certain sectors (usually in finance, entertainment, and medical) has pushed a lot of them to the US. We definitely have a much quieter life up here; we aren't attention seekers, violent crime is definitely lower, quality of life is higher (also meaning more expensive sometimes), and things generally don't go nuclear political so easily causing those deep divides in American society. I'm homegrown Torontonian but with a mother and wife who are Hong Kongers, living in an area that is primarily Indian and Middle Easterners...and I feel i can ask either of my neighbors to look after the house if I go away for a couple weeks. It was the same in my old neighborhood that was a lot of Italians and Latinos. I'm more Conservative while they lean more towards Socialism and Liberalism, but we can still borrow a cup of sugar and look out for the neighbors father who has a heart condition.

Correct on both points. Plenty of studies show that taxes are the same in both countries, once all usage and service fees are included. As for diversity, Canada is proportionally more diverse. Also, it is more widely recognized that everyone is not too far removed from an immigrant parent or grandparent.

@@brucemacneil I too have worked in both countries. Specifically, I worked in Redmond for three years, and compared the taxes in both countries. Agree with the hosts, more stability here with higher lows and lower highs and that's just fine with me. The bottomline is what you are looking for. Both countries have their own goods and bads as you described. The bottomline is what you concluded: money vs life/balance. If you hear what Nigel Ng said in his past few podcasts comparing USA vs UK vs Asia, it really at the end of the day comes down to what you are looking for and make the best out of it. Personally, I care more about life balance and social security where I don't have to work all my life to enjoy it later. I came from Indonesia, where it is all about hussle and bussle, but I don't really enjoy it. I love the quieter life where I can really enjoy the littlest things in life that I find in Canada. Also, Toronto is too busy for me and hence I live an hour away from it. Although I do go to Toronto for the diverse foods there.

I went to a high school where black kids would jump a random Asian kid every week for fun. However they didn’t know anything about South East Asians and soon a war began. It made it on the newspapers. With that said, the racism here is barely noticeable. You might get a comment here and there. Like when I worked as loss prevention, this random 6’4” white man came up to me just to tell me I was a small Asian. When I’m out in public, no one really dares to do anything unless they are thugs. At that point, Asians have made quite a reputation here that people do think twice about trying anything. I would say it’s reasonably comfy. I imagine other rural places like Canada would be worse

Immigrant who lived till mid20s in Toronto and now living in the US... to simplify, if ur somewhat ambitious and want to strive for best quality of life, US is the place to be. If you want maybe just above decent lifestyle, Canada may be a good fit for you. Canada on average might be clean, safe and good quality of life, but will not grant you any improvement. For more details.. for those who think that Toronto specifically has lower cost of living is definitely wrong. First of all, there's definitely higher supply of workforce and not enough demand for jobs, which leads to lower pay in comparison to qualification (due to market size, openness to international talent, etc). On top of that, due to international wealthy buyer ruining the house market with 100% cash purchases, the prices for property and rent have been sky-rocketting. I'd imagine Vancouver to be the same. the quality of life generally spoken here is only guaranteed if you were a immigrant family that moved in during the 90s/early 00s (just like me). As a side-note about asian GUYS potentially moving to Toronto specifically.. it's a small community out there, so the dating culture can become really awkward. Also, I feel like there's more opportunity in New York for example to engage in relationships.
