Andrew Knight is Professor of Animal Welfare and Ethics, and Founding Director of the University of Winchester Centre for Animal Welfare, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Environment and Science at Griffith University, Queensland. An experienced cat and dog veterinarian, he's also a European, American, New Zealand and RCVS -recognised Veterinary Specialist in animal welfare and related fields. He has around 150 academic and 80 popular publications, and an extensive series of RU-vid videos and several websites (including www.sustainabl...), on plant-based companion animal diets, climate change and the livestock sector, invasive animal research, educational animal use, humane clinical and surgical skills training, and other animal welfare issues. He regularly works with animal welfare charities to advocate for animals, and is frequently interviewed by the media. He has received over 20 awards and research grants for this work.
The environmental impacts of pet food (e.g., land use, water use, fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gas production, pesticide and fertilizer use, and impacts on biodiversity loss), are globally significant. The proportion of ‘food’ animals used in pet food is also significant. All of these impacts are set to rise, due to increasing pet ownership worldwide, and the changing social status of companion animals. However, alternative pet foods based on novel protein sources such as plants and seaweed, insects, yeast, fungi and laboratory grown meat products, are rapidly developing. Vegan pet foods are most developed. These use plant, mineral and synthetic sources to ensure all necessary nutrients are included. In 2020 I surveyed 4,060 dog or cat guardians to investigate determinants of pet food purchasing decisions, as well as health, behavioural and other outcomes on different diets. I also surveyed 29 manufacturers to determine whether nutritional soundness and quality control of plant-based pet foods differed from those of meat-based diets. Results from these and other studies indicate that the healthiest and least hazardous pet foods may be nutritionally sound vegan diets. Detailed analysis of feeding behaviour indicates dogs and cats generally find such diets as palatable as conventional diets. And manufacturers of plant-based pet foods generally appear to adhere to equivalent or better quality control standards. The potential environmental and animal welfare benefits of plant-based and alternative pet foods are significant. Their use is already rapidly increasing, and significant expansion of this sector is expected in the future.

In the interests of full disclosure, I am vegan, so I am incentivised to believe that it is well demonstrated that cats and dogs can go vegan without any health downsides. However, I'm not quite convinced by the study in the video. Knight said that some of the stats for the raw meat diet could be explained by the fact that owners who subscribe to it are going to say they take their pet to the vet less frequently by virtue of their already being less likely to listen to a vet, as the raw meat diet is frowned on by many vets. I take that point, but could that not equally be applied to those who feed their dogs vegan diets? I was utterly puzzled when he didn't say the same goes for them, or explain why it might be different. Especially given that he started the talk by quoting someone who said that they consider putting a cat on a vegan diet tantamount to illegal animal abuse. People who are vegan and have their dogs on a vegan diet may well not take their dog to a vet if they think they might get reported for abuse or negligence. And besides all that, a lot seems to rely on what is essentially self-reporting on the part of the owners, and vegans are incentivised to deny any negative health claims because people so often use it as a charge against them. In the case of humans, I believe that is done unfairly, as we have demonstrated that humans get on absolutely fine without meat (I'm doing it right now!). But in the case of cats and dogs? I just don't know!

A good point. Studies show those feeding raw meat diets are more likely to get their info from non-veterinary sources. They are much more likely not to neuter their animals, contrary to routine veterinary healthcare advice. They were also about twice as likely, not to visit vets at all in the last year, contrary to routine advice to visit once annually for annual vaccinations/health checkups. There are no such studies indicating those feeding vegan diets are less likely to comply with veterinary advice, and they are more likely to neuter animals than other groups, and a large proportion are not failing to visit vets one time within the previous year, all of which indicate they're more likely to comply with vet advice, and don't share the same reluctance to visit vets. (One vet visit in the prior year, indicates compliance with routine advice to visit once annually for annual vaccinations/health checkups. Two or more visits may indicate an ongoing health problem.)

One critical point, however - I'm not sure I heard you mention a need to supplement with long chain omega-3 fatty acids (DHA, EPA) - I know in humans we can convert the shorter chain, plant based ALA into the long chain omega-3s, but the conversion rate even for us is very meager - about 2-5% I believe, and I would guess it's far less in cats, which would have far higher long chain omega-3's in their natural diets, and negligible ALA which isn't found in high levels in animal tissues: perhaps cats lack the enzymes to convert ALA, I don't know. But DHA/EPA can be supplemented either with the cheaper fish oils, or the more expensive, and less available vegan source (derived from algae) which is produced in far lower volumes not adequate to meet the high demand that a popular conversion of cats and dogs to vegan diets would necessarily entail. We'll need new production methods for this vegan DHA/EPA which may take decades to develop as far as I know (which is not very far).

To the people commenting on cat diets may i suggest you take a look at the actual ingredients in commercially manufactured cat food. Only the very expensive cat food is high in animal protein the more popular Felix, Whiskas , Sheba etc contain much less and include vegetable protein to bulk it out. Felix ingredients Meat and Animal Derivatives* (14% of which Chicken 8%), Vegetable Protein Extracts, Fish and Fish Derivatives, Minerals, Various Sugars, *Chunks: 44% Meat and Animal Derivatives.

So who exactly feeds their carnivore pet a vegan diet ? People who are into veganism / saving the planet. Surely those people are going to promote the diet when questioned about it ? What about animals that became very ill or even died from a vegan diet - they will not show up in the questionnaires or in sample groups . I have been on forums discussing this topic and they are full pet owners advising each other on vegan diets. There are also many comments about animals that became very ill or even died. Funny that Andrew ignores this but mentions how owners who feed their pets raw meat tend to get bad advice from the internet. Most people who are passionate about the benefits from specific diets get their info from other believers on the internet - sometimes with fatal consequences.

My cat refuses to comply to testing, experimenting with different foods - vegan or not. He simply refuses to eat. How can I allow him not to eat for two or more days? A cat's kidneys will shut down in two days if he does not eat. Does the cat commit suicide? It is very difficult to watch as kitty refuses to eat what is put out for him.

80 billion land animals killed every year to feed us and our pets, 90% of which are intensively farmed: barren environments, cramped, having tails cut off and castrated WITHOUT ANAESTHETIC OR PAIN KILLERS. Then they are slaughtered by being electrocuted and having their throats slits. Given they are as intelligent, aware, sensitive and emotional as the young child that you have or that you were, how can this be justified, particularly as the conversion rate for plant calories to meat calories is about 8 to 1, and that 80% of farmland is for meat or feedstock for animals? We have a food crisis: millions die of malnutrition every year. If we weren't so greedy for meat then food prices would crash and no-one would have to starve. Meanwhile, we bread so many cats and dogs for money while at the same time many millions fester in animal shelters, and many millions are euthenised or abandoned every year. And to top it all off, we kill off species - make them extinct - at a rate of 5 every hour, and have done for decades. That's right. And we've also destroyed the whole of nature, which was one perfectly balanced system, the only perfect thing on Earth, and we have with it destroyed all our children's futures, and for what? For nature depleted dystopias full of nothing but wage slaves in their factories, shops, offices and private dwellings? To create societies where the top 1% own more wealth then the bottom half of the society? Is it for this that we wreak such suffering on the whole of nature and increasingly, on humanity as a whole? Wake the fuck up people. It's an abomination to eat meat with abandon and without a very bad conscience. At most meat should be eaten very sparingly. It's inexcusable to do otherwise, and one day we will see our civilization as every bit as barberous and cruel as we see the very worst tyrannies of today and of yesterday. Making cats and dogs vegan is a secondary issue, but certainly we should be feeding them more healthy, nutritionally balanced alternatives, including insects, lab grown meat and excellent vegetarian alternatives, with a bias towards fish, eggs and chicken insofar as we are feeding them farm produced meat.

One only needs to analyze the GI tract of felines, canines, humans and herbivores. Felines have zero capacity to process carbohydrate or cellulose. As a result they are obligate carnivores. Canines and humans have similar GI systems, and are optimized for perhaps 90 percent meat intake, and have a very limited capacity to digest carbohydrates. This is basic biology. Any attempt to convert Cats or dogs to a vegan diet is the very definition of insanity.

A vegan diet is a subsitence diet or starvation diet and to make it even remotely work you have to eat a very diverse amount of food. A human can survive on eggs and water but there is not one plant a human can remotely survive on. Dogs are omnivores but survive like their close cousins wolves on mostly meat and scavenging. Cats are obligate carnivores to feed them a vegan diet is like feeding them slow poison. Humans are far closer digestively to carnivores than herbivores and there is no veganvore fact is it was humans through hybridization and genetic modufycarion we even have the fruit and vegs we have today. If you think our pets can live a full healthy life on a 70% grain based high heat processed doggie fast food diet ask yourself why our pets fed these commercial diets get oral health issues, diabetes, cancers and largely all die long before 20. Humans our pets and our domestic livestock are the only animals on the planet eating grain seperate from the whole plant and then not only do we not eat the whole plant we strip the fiber from the grain and seeds leaving us with pure sugar and oil. Then we wonder why we and our pets get metabolically dysfunctional. Flooding our digestive System with pure sugar and oil bypassing the full natural digestive process is common sense a recipe for metabolic disaster. Hence why i largely quit eating sugar, grain, starch and high glycemic fruit opting for a diet foundation based on meat, fish, eggs and low starch vegs. Im not the same weight i was in my 20s at 56, no longer pre diabetic or no more high blood pressure or any script pills. My dog is 3 never brush his teeth and his teeth are spectacular clean, clean breath, no allergies, healthy.i even have a short video showing his teeth. Veganism is a politically pushed disaster for our pets and for omnivore humans.

You shouldn't eat just one plant on a vegan diet. Who says that's what a vegan diet is? A healthy, balanced whole food plant based diet is extremely beneficial for human health and longevity. A human on eggs and water would be extremely unhealthy lmao wtf kind of point is this. You take away 4 foods from the millions available, it's not suddenly a starvation diet lmao.
