Shouldn't it be common knowledge by now that the soy produced in the Amazon is NOT used for tofu/soy milk but for animal feed? Why does this have to be debunked again and again and again? And why does a farmer get a platform on TV to spread misinformation and portray himself as an animal lover and environmentalist? Great video as always. Boost for the algorithm. 🌱

Another factor is how the meat and dairy industries are subsidized to keep the prices down, if they were not subsidized the prices would rise and people would look for alternatives.

One of the biggest challenges in eliminating dairy from our diets is not consuming all the various supermarket products that have milk in them. I really hate how often I find milk listed in the ingredient information (although eventually you start knowing what you can and cannot buy at the supermarket and it becomes autopilot). Hoping for a near future where milk is no longer such a default ingredient in so many products.

This one time i read a article that sais that soy increases your chance of getting cancer. The article had researched linked below. I opened the research and started reading. the conclusion of the Research was that soy does NOT increase chance of cancer, and so far only showed signs of possible protection against certain cancers. How people can be so retarded i don't know.

@@callumwilliams7439 If you aren't a fan of human rights then sure but if you are then I can't see how you are not obligated as animal rights, like the right to life, freedom from slavery and so on, are a logical extension of human rights. In order to bypass this obligation you would have to come up with a lack of a specific trait or traits that would allow the slaughter and exploitation of non-human animals and rights and freedoms of humans simultaneously.

Eco-nerd here. If you're really concerned about it, you can swap out as much of your staples for locally grown (preferably high yield) stuff as possible. I live in Ontario, so my best choice is oat milk. I make my own coz it's relatively easy and because those paper cartons aren't actually recyclable. I used to only drink almond and cashew milk. My nearest almond source is California, where the agriculture industry is largely responsible for water shortages and mistreatment of migrant workers. Almonds are a particularly thirsty crop (approximately one gallon of water per almond grown), so they shouldn't even be allowed to grow there. Most cashews are grown in Brazil, and we all know how shady and destructive their agriculture industry is, especially since Bolsonaro.

@@nekochadechu I soak soy beans overnight, put into plant milk machine, strain through milk bag or strainer and enjoy. The $70 I spent on milk machine Pays for itself. Homemade soy milk costs me $1 month for soybeans. Only takes about 20 minutes to make 1 liter of milk. I highly recommend it.

I live in germany and get 1 liter of my oat milk wtih oats that are farmed locally for around 90 cents. That's literally around 33% cheaper, than the milk my mother drinks and is better for the planet and you don't have to steal children. That's why I can't take meat eaters serious, especailly here in germany.

i find this extra funny consider how meat heavy our country actually is. like i looked how much meat the average germans consume, and i knew it was much but despite the seemingly rising veganism the average meat consumption per german is around the same as years prior. even as a non vegan i have to admit the reasons to stay non vegan are rather non existent. yet still i'd lie to myself if i'd say i'd plan to go vegan anytime soon.

It's unbelievable that you even have to talk about this. OVER NINETY FIVE PERCENT IS FOR THE POOR ANIMALS' FEED. And the majority of us vegans eat organic, sustainable soy anyways. Carnists just want any excuse to destroy our ethical lifestyle but that'll NEVER HAPPEN. Vegan since 1990 and it is absolutely the best decision I've ever made.

I know it's hard, but you have to be more understanding. The insulting behavior of the vegan community (including myself, admittedly) has actually slowed down the global switch towards veganism. While at the same time, one can watch numerous documentaries showing those same "poor indigenous peoples" how they are being deprived of their lifestyles and persecuted, maltreated, beaten, raped and even murdered for deterrent purposes only to drive them from their ancestral lands. Some very simple arguments against veganism 1) animals may be sentiant but that doesn't mean they have human sentiance 2) us farming animals is helping the species grow thus benefitting the species 3) where humans not cows not chickens where homo sapians and the expansion of out species should be more important then others 4) there are various ways to save the environment without giving up meat/dairy like banning fishing in certain areas to regenerate fishing

If you meant to ask ''how do you know that your stomach hurts from cow's milk" in this strange way it's because they put it in the porridge at kindergartens and in a cocoa drink in schools + my grandma had been putting milk in mashed potatoes. But it's not like people are aware of such term as lactose intolerance in my country, people just don't drink milk that much here, it's mostly used for baking or cold desserts, often in a fermented form

I live on my family's overgrown, uncared for almond orchard in Spain, the trees are never watered and we get plenty of nuts, way more than we can use without selling them (we make our own almond milk).

I think it is so hard for people to accept the truth, because that would mean you have to admit what you did was immoral all this time, even though you considered yourself to be all for animals to be treated well and for a healthy environment. My wife and I have gone vegetarian a year ago and are now making the step to veganism. We realized that our eating habits were wrong, and it's okay to admit that. Thank you for your work! i love this video and it really helps me confirm why i decided to do what i am doing 8 months in from veganuary. HOWEVER, from having discussions (sometimes arguments) with people in my social and professional lift, it would be remiss if i didn't say that i know people will still watch this and say that "yeah but vegan milk is so expensive". as if they suddenly care about working class people... but tbf they do have a point!! so we need to make sure our response is "so what you're saying is you agree that in every other metric plant-based milks are preferable over diary, and our government needs to subsidise plant based-milks in the same way they are subsidising dairy milk?". now that we have this knowledge, let's make sure we're not going to be done-over by one-line quips... the bane of every vegan's existence. and not to stan Ed too hard but read his 30 non-vegan excuses if you haven't yet ;)

In the UK you can buy cartons of 1L plant milk for around £0.90 at Aldi. The offer has been expanding over the last couple of years and they now have soy, almond, oat and coconut milk. As long as there is demand, big supermarkets will start to offer generic versions of plant based milk at affordable prices. It's just a matter of time for many countries.

@@angelaso8411 Yes, in Canada plant milks are about the same price as dairy (~$4 / 2L) at the grocery store. But most coffee shops here still charge $0.50-0.80 more for non-dairy milks, which is unfortunate and unfair.

@dannyr429 Miyoko does it a bit more to my taste than violife every time. They go pretty intense in the fermentation but to me that’s great because I often use these products as bases for other things that need to be diluted with other ingredients. Miyoko’s cream cheese can be a base for everything and makes a great crumbly cheese for salads & the oat, navy, and garbanzo cheese shreds are so melty and good. A lot of their products are really good but I wish they would make a really stretchy rice based product. One that really does what homogenized dairy does for the famous Pizza Slut stuffed crust pan pizza where you pick it up and it just follows you.

2 problems are that 1) typically materials such as these in info shows or breakfast tv get from seconds to several minutes, checking everything would generate too much cost, and the aim of such shows is not information really, but entertainment, so it's just not worth it; 2) the people appearing in such materials, like that farmer or chefs cooking live usually "sponsor" for the show. And if someone's paying you money, it's rather expected that you don't go after them...

“Cows milk is worse in every single way” not taste. The majority of people don’t care about morals when it comes to something so important like taste. Taste is everything to people, and although I drink plant milk I know milk’s taste is another world and I completely get why the situation is like this. Same for meat and eggs. Somebody finds a way to fight this with a proper taste competition and it will all end like nothing but till now animal’s industry taste is winning by a large margin. It’s obvious that they’re just making excuses and trying to find ethical justifications to justify why they’re doing such crazy things, and you can easily expose every single one of them being completely right and them being obviously wrong, but in the end what really matters is taste, that’s where I think the focus should go.

Really? I've always hated the taste of raw milk and it was only made tolerable with additions like coffee or chocolate. The only reason some alternatives like cheese are weird to me is because I was too used to the previous flavour and not necessarily because it was better.

No? maybe some horse or dog milk? ignore the obvious problems that would come with extracting these mammals milk, afterall, these animals are not as gentle and placid as the well natured cow. Thank you Ed! You've been inspirational to me becoming a veganic farmer. 4 years ago now I started growing garlic as a hobby that could boost my self employed income. The first years were tough, opening land, cover cropping, sorry a** crops.. 4 years later and still no animal manures, i've expanded into growing vegetables because of the pandemic. Local support is amazing, I don't truck anything in and even my irrigation is supplied by A/C run off from a business nextdoor and rain. Power company tree trimmers now know to dump wood chips for me to compost(took years to secure this). As a 4th year vegan myself, although I still work hard it honestly doesn't feel harder than it was 4 years ago, even doing more, and next year I may even be able to employ people. You "forgot" to mention a main problem of drinking soya milk: it causes arthritis. My mother drank soya milk and had to take pills because she got joints pain. Then she changed to oat milk and now she's ok and no longer has to take the pills against hyperacidity.

Bio oat milk in my country is cheaper than bio cows milk. I didn't like oat milk in the beginning, but I adapted to the taste in a year and now I really love using it for cornflakes and barley coffee :) It's the best option from all alternatives when it comes to the impact on the environment. (Another tipp: great alternative to normal coffee is barley coffee, since it doesn't need as much water and is better for environment too. If you are looking for caffeine, then green tea might be a great solution, it's even healthier.)
