Granger Smith Podcast Ep233: Today, we're diving into a topic that's been a hot button issue for many: should Christian’s curse? Join me as I react to videos and address one of the most commonly asked questions I receive. As someone who's been in the public eye for quite some time, I understand the curiosity surrounding this topic, especially given my history of incorporating curse words into my music. Throughout this video, we'll delve deep into various perspectives, discussing the nuances of cursing as a Christian and the implications it holds.
We'll tackle a range of ideas, including the notions of judgment from both God and others, the significance of the heart according to Jesus, and the struggle between fitting in and staying true to one's faith. From exploring the concept of being perfect to understanding the power dynamics at play when speaking on a public platform, we'll leave no stone unturned. So, whether you're grappling with the idea of cursing as a Christian or simply curious about the debate, this video offers insights, reflections, and maybe even some answers.

Thank you so much for posting this. Jesus delivered me from addiction from alcohol 6 years ago with no desire at all! 🕊️🙌 Hallelujah! But, I struggle with cussing and a hot temper 😢 Not half as much as I used to, but it still comes flying out of left field 🫣 Jesus said it's what comes out of our mouths that defiles is, not what goes in. I pray daily for Him to create in me a new heart, that thirsts after Him. Prayers for all of us who struggle with this 🙏

I sent you a message about a year ago a similar question to you about this topic, truly you have answered this question at the end and I feel the same way, it’s called sanctification! I could not understand how you could preach and still play the character as Earl Dibbles and chew and drink and promote that to ur fans, and then promote Christianity from you own mouth! Thanks for being real and growing just as I am!

What you say comes from your heart..... Lets be real - As Christians we are called to be witnesses. In the world today, those you are witnessing to are not going to pay attention to what you say about God if they know you are one using such language. There's no mix...#inbutnotof#theworld......The devil is still at it as he did when he mixed everything and deceived Eve. GOD help us all🙏

52 yrs ago, as a new wife, I said "shoot". I had never cussed in my life, except for saying "cotton picking". But, when I said shoot, my new husband gently said, "You know honey, when you say that word, you are just replacing it with the other "sh" word. Would you believe it took me a moment to even realize what word he was referring to. I didn't hear cussing at school, at home or church friends, except I must have picked up "shoot" along the way. I feel so blessed God gave me a godly, sanctified husband to encourage me from the beginning of our marriage. We also didn't know the word 'divorce". I've been keeping up with you and Amber since River passed away and watching this journey of transformation and I feel like a proud "Mama". Praying you continue to grow and disciple others...go make disciples! Give Amber a hug from us. From Coweta, OK.

I keep reminding myself that Jesus said that every idle word we speak will be accounted for. Tho' our sins are covered, our rewards are lost, and our testimony soiled. I didn't realize til just last year that 'shoot,' 'darn,' etc., were just abbreviated cuss words, then once I knew I had to be accountable. Bad habits, but they were learned, and can be unlearned 😊

I feel your love and conviction of your heart. Even as Christians we have to be convicted as God works in our life. As I was just getting my breakfast ready, I dropped my measuring cup and thought "darn it" and immediately rebuked myself and apologized to God. I used to say darn it, daggumit, shoot alot, but as I get closer to Jesus and being more faithful in my walk, those words and sayings are being used less. Thank you for sharing a great topic.

As a Christian, I would never want to speak in a way that might cause my brother or sister to stumble. We need to show we can do better. God changes us. The Holy Spirit convicts us of this. Although you can ignore the convictions. I don't feel you should. The Bible tells us to be set apart. Cursing, swearing is how I was when I was living in the world. It has no place for me living a Christian life.

I've watched our Lord work in you with the sanctification process and could see you leaving the music industry long before you did. Actually a few months before announced that you were leaving I was discussing this with someone at church at the end of a service while talking about sanctification. I've learned other ways over the 29 years now of being a Christian of how to express things like the girls said and instead of the way they were talking about it because of my wanting to express in a deep way my love for a friend is to say something like "I love you sooooooooooo much" so they see the emphasis but no swearing or sub words that we all know what it really means. As you said it takes time but it's a matter of our heart psoture and asking God to work on it to remind us when we do so that we stop doing it. Also as you said allowing grace to others who are not at that point yet and praying for them in love and mentoring others as well. By no means am I ever saying I'm perfect or have it all together but so thankful that Jesus has worked and continues to work on my heart and will continue to forever.

Sanctification is definitely a process. We are not perfect and as Jesus pointed out a lot of the time, humility is a critical part of our repentance and sanctification process. We have to be willing to consider that what we think might just be wrong instead of what we often do, which is standard ground and fight for our stance or opinion on an issue. We would be humble and everything and consider it and be constantly self evaluating and repenting, because Christians are definitely not perfect. They are forgiven and with forgiveness and belief and guidance from the spirit in God‘s word. There is some sanctification in our lives, but we will never be perfect and always Need forgiveness but having humility and considering that we might be wrong about something is a good thing and makes us a better person.

I'm sure folks from biblical times said their versions of it... and what makes a word a cuss, a swear? Because we said so? Someone was like "I don't like the way that sounds, and I'm going to make this invented word and tell everyone that this is not a good word to say" (all these words are invented, and we just associate it because someone god knows when decided to say it was a swear...) You know who said it best... Patrick Star..."they're sentence enhancers." Enjoy!

The abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Why is it a sin to cuss / swear / curse? Sin is a condition of the heart, the mind, and "the inner man" (Romans 7:22), which is manifested in our thoughts, actions and words. When we swear and curse, we are giving evidence of the polluting sin in our hearts that must be confessed and repented of. When we put our faith in Christ, we receive a new nature from God.

Let them know that it bothers you. If they apologize and say they'll try to do better, that's great, and we can help them with that if they'll allow it. I got into an argument about this a couple of weeks ago. Webster adds words every yr due to use by people. And adds/changes definitions to words due to context used. This means words that either didn't exist, or changed meanings. 100 yrs ago, 200 yrs , 300 yrs etc etc, a lot of words said today were never heard of. People have made some words offensive in their own minds. In a world where free speech is attacked daily, why are people concerned and tell people not so say something THEY find offensive but others don't. 🤔

In fact, swearing amounts to verbal abuse - and Jesus had some important things to say about the seriousness of that issue (see Matthew 5:22). Instead, we should speak positive and encouraging words. The apostle Paul says, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Colossians 4:6, ESV).

For one they needed to find the difference between cursing and saying a bad word, or a socially non-accepted word. Actually, cursing is calling a curse upon someone or is leaning over into the realm of witchcraft potentially. Honestly, I’m surprised people still ask these questions, of course it’s not a good thing to do and if you’re out there, telling people you’re a Christian, and therefore representing God and his word and you’re supposed to be in his image, reflecting his glory then of course it’s not a good idea, depending on how you do it, it can be a sin, but either way it’s unnecessary. We are forgiven for our sins so it’s not like if you Slip up and drop an F bomb that your losing your salvation but the truth is, it’s just a bad idea and my guinea other sin, if we’re filled with the spirit, I’m wanting to glorify God then it’s probably something we should strive to avoid, and should want to avoid. Those of us who’ve lived in the world have bad habits, and sometimes things come out of our males that shouldn’t and thoughts come into our heads that shouldn’t, but if you’re truly Christian, you should be somewhat repulsed by sin naturally. And those who choose to intentionally sin in anyway Rejecting God and defying him directly. All that aside when you call yourself a Christian representing God, and I think it’s a good idea to act that way not just with cussing, but everything we do and how we treat people. God‘s word, and his commands said to love your neighbor as yourself, but Jesus took it to a new level and told us we are to love each other as he loves us. That’s why we should consider everything we do carefully and pay attention, we shouldn’t cower to everybody who claims to be offended by us, but at the same time we should make a sincere effort to not legitimately be offensive Towards others, if they’re overly sensitive and get triggered by your Christianity or your beliefs, that’s one thing, but if you’re out there, just being a jerk and being rude and defensive, then that’s on you not them, though it may not be a command from God that you shall not do everything, It’s not a black-and-white situation where a line is drawn and everything on one side of the line is perfect and holy and everything on the other is evil. Yeah if you get hit by a car and you let out an unpleasant word to It’s not a big deal if you’re running around, dropping the F bomb And being rude or even intentionally offensive to people, and you’re doing something bad, and at some levels, it can definitely be sinful. It is what it is, there are a lot of things that are allowed, but can be taken too far. Drinking for one say we can’t drink, but it strongly warned about drinking excessively, a lot of Christians love to just pull up a case of beer on the weekend and get ridiculously drunk. I think it’s OK because Jesus made wine out of water and they say the Bible says it’s OK, people like to do what they want and ignore a lot of what God teaches us, and expects from us, and not everything is hard written rule, but sure, a true Christian you’re trying to glorify God we should think about everything we do, and when Jesus command us to love one another as he loves us, we should consider whether or not what we’re doing is disrespectful to others. If you wouldn’t do it in front of your mom or grandma then why is it OK to do in front of other people? It’s not a doer don’t situation or your condemn to hell if you drop an F bomb but at the same time you’re supposed to be glorifying God and you should consider if it’s really necessary or if you’re just putting yourself first and not caring. It’s for everybody to decide for themselves, but if you’re walking around and dropping F bombs with cannon beer in your hand, all the time, don’t be surprised if people judge you and the form a certain opinion and it’s cool if you don’t care, but remember that you’re supposed to be glorifying God and if you’re running around saying I’m a Christian And say you’re representing God and then you act like a jerk in your kind of projecting your careless behavior on all Christians and God. In the 10 Commandments, we interpreted as, or it’s translated, as you shall not take the Lord‘s name in vain, more accurately some interpreted as to misuse the Lords name, if you go back to the original before the translations, those words also carry a context of representation as in you calling yourself a Christian and then acting inappropriately and projecting the image of your behavior on God it’s not just talking about saying a certain word or phrase with his name in it it’s talking about you miss using inappropriately using his name or misrepresenting it. So if you were on national TV going on saying I’m a representative of Christianity and of God are you going to act differently or are you just gonna go up there with a beer can and drop F bombs? It is what it is and everybody can decide for themselves because nobody’s gonna, just follow rules of what we say about it, but I think people should read God’s word and consider these things when they make these choices. Whatever they be, because they’re unsaved people out there. We’re gonna hear you say you’re a Christian and look at the things you do, and if they see you as rude or whatever it’s going to affect how they see God and his word and Christianity and General because you are representing it. I don’t think it’s a sin that will condemn you to hell unless you’re directly using God‘s name but not everything is about salvation and not being saved. It may not continue to hell but you may be condemning somebody else to help because if somebody thinks you’re a loser and a jerk because of the way you act and judges God and Christianity based on your actions, then I think that will probably be on you, specially when it comes to our place in rewards in heaven, after Jesus returns. We will all be judged, and we will be forgiven for our sins, but we will still be judged on our actions and what we did, and didn’t do. It’s not a simple answer that fits every situation but personally I think it’s pretty bad idea and we should try not to. Think about it this way. If you’re standing out in your backyard and God showed up to talk to you, with your language and actions be any different? And if so, why? Person I think what it really comes down to is how it affects other people. God‘s been around for a long time, no cussing or words that come out of your mouth are really going to be surprising or shocking to him at all, but in my mind, it comes down to, how what you’re saying is affecting other people and if you’re out there using names trying to hurt people or you’re just being vulgar or intentionally offensive or unintentionally, and how your representing God and Christianity to others, especially non-believers. If you’re just being a loudmouth foul mouth, jerk, and defending people in general Yet calling yourself a Christian, you may be turning people off the Christianity because you’re representing it and you’re representing God and I think that’s something pretty serious to consider. When they were talking about replacement words or pseudo words. It was a good point, because though you’re not saying it, you’re still sort of saying it, you walked up to a girl and made a rude sexual comment to her and vulgar, it’s easy to say that is inappropriate and that is something bad, but if you locked up and made a comment with nicer words, but still had the same implication, it’s still the same thing. And then you’re arguing about which is worse, but even having the argument, that one is worse than the other means that both are bad, just embarrass degrees, that sort of like it’s OK to send just a little bit or saying well my son is in as bad as Hitler sin, so That justifies it?, There’s either good or bad there’s holier unholy there’s appropriate and inappropriate and whether it’s not as bad or not means it’s still bad. I’m definitely guilty of this but when we’re being honest, it’s still kind of the same thing it’s kind of like using innuendo or double entendre, it’s a different word, but it still carries the same meaning or significance to some extent. This was a good video, we often just build habits or attitudes when we’re new Christians and never think about them again. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there have been Christians for a long time or a lot more mature, but are still making mistakes because of habitual behavior . When I reread the Bible often realize that some of my conceptions and understanding of it when I read it before wrong and I missed things or I got them wrong completely and I think it’s a good idea to re-examine these things even the little questions from time to time and kind of reevaluate Where we stand on things and how we act. I feel a lot differently about these things now than I did 20 years ago and I think it’s good to just kind of reevaluate everything knowing what we know now and applying what we’ve learned because I think a lot of times we just sort of getting the habit of blowing things off and not really thinking about them or considering them And we do things habitually without really thinking, but we’ve changed, and it’s probably good practice to go back and reconsider these things and not just be set in our ways just because that’s the way we’ve always done it.

Cussing and speaking of faith makes you lukewarm and be spewed out of the mouth of God. The tongue is the last thing to be tamed I have been in church 12yrs and in ministry 9yrs and I was filthy and I worked hard and quit cussing

Does any man have the right to decide whether someone is a Christian or righteous? I always figured God and God alone would decide that. I figured it was up to me to decide what is right and what is wrong read my Bible and repent to the Lord for my sins.

Personally, I get easily offended by curse words. And I'm positive that Jesus gets even more offended by them. So, no it's unacceptable to speak that way. Especially for the believer❤❤

As Granger expounded in the video, it's about cursing, cussing, and profanity. Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. We have a call to make our speech better than the world's.

Who "Deemed'' certain works curse words? and why do we give these words so much power? and why is middle finger FU? serious question just curious.

God, God hates swearing, as for middle finger- it is non verbal cursing, I don't know the history much, you can google it, but it's bad, obviously not as bad as speaking it though.

You don't have to cuss in order to win people for Jesus. You can say " yes I have cussed and struggled" I mean I could tell people I've struggled with lust verses pulling up only fans and saying oh man she's hot.

I cursed many years ago, but I changed when I accepted Jesus in my heart and didn't want to disrespect my Lord. I don't believe you can lead someone to Jesus by speaking as they do because you're not showing them the truth about who you are in Christ and who Christ is.
