Honestly as I get closer to God I don't listen to secular music nor watch much TV because it doesn't have anything for me. It doesn't edify nor feed me.

Listening to skilled musicians sing and play feeds me tremendously. Music, and the talent to play and sing it well comes from God, even if they aren't necessarily singing about Him.

Well that’s good for you if you are living a happy life. This really isn’t a solid argument for it. Paintings don’t really edify me, they don’t give me the secret to life. I just fee better when I look at it. Yet everyone has art in their house. It doesn’t do a lot. It’s just there.

@@calebgibson55 Yeah and that's his point.....it's just superficial and not edifying your spirit/your relationship with God. God comes first, everything else is secondary. It's not sin to enjoy these things but to focus on it primarily is not going to help you grow as a follower of Christ. That would be living a worldly life and Christians are called to live above that. Like you said.....it's just there. It's just a thing, nothing more.

Theres clearly a difference, my old "secular" music turns my feelings of all I once felt back to that, and while its permissible its far from edifying. I simply love biblical based songs that turn my thoughts to the incredible beauty of Christ that cause a flow of praise, joy, reminders, that cause my heart to continually bow to Him.

That is wonderful. Seriously. Whatever it takes to maximize your relationship with God or assuage your soul. I condemn nobody, and never belittle any music that praises my Lord. Having said that, I personally find most (not all) contemporary Christian music to be banal, vanilla, pre-packaged, limited and unimaginative. I love hard rock and metal (and other kinds as well). I love thrash metal especially, but not some of the black stuff. But, the stuff I listen to feeds my soul. Bottom line, it is so nice to read your sweet spirit, but I shamelessly enjoy the music I enjoy, and I am a believer.

As I mature in my walk with the Lord, I really start to notice one thing that Leonard Ravenhill once said. Ravenhill didn't go to seminary; he prayed and studied the Bible for 16 hours everyday. He said one time, that men leave seminary with a swollen head and a shrunken heart. When asked the question about secular music, Dr. Derek Thomas goes off on a tangent like the question was so intellectual and it deserved an intellectual response... Look, any music which doesn't honor God or glorify God (which is called secular music) is exactly that. I used to listen to pop music like everyone else until I no longer wanted to be like everyone else. We are set aside. We aren't supposed to be like everyone else. I wanted to saturate my life with Christ and Christ only.

Exactly. Music contains and conveys messages. It's NOT neutral. It either promotes the values of the world or the values of God. It glorifies the kingdom of darkness or the kingdom of light! Many Christians struggle with this question. Many secular musicians are immensely talented. Secular music can be very entertaining. There are many secular songs that have catchy melodies, thoughtful insights, and positive messages. In determining whether or not to listen to secular music, there are three primary factors to consider: 1) the purpose of music, 2) the style of music, and 3) the content of the lyrics.

What is the effect it is having on the individual as well? Don’t listen to something that stumbles you. Don’t judge someone for listening to something that doesn’t stumble them. @@Truthin15 I agree, but we can not disregard the fact that art is essentially objective while carrying qualitative differences which can be deemed subjective . I am a Christian, and have been a professional musician for over 40 years. The only music I like is heavy metal. I would never want heavy metal in a worship service, because in heavy metal, it's ALL about the technical abilities of the musicians, not about the words. I don't know the words to a single heavy metal song, and neither do most heavy metal fans. In worship, the music itself should be simple, with three-chords and a straight-forward 4/4 beat (the kind of music I despise) so that the message comes through without the technical abilities of the musician taking the spotlight. I play heavy metal because, as a musician, no other music is as challenging and skill-building. When I play at church, I play as I did when I was a beginner, so that I draw no attention to myself. It's not about me, it's about Jesus.

I think we should look at the Song of Solomon (or the Song of Songs) for this matter. This love poetry is in the bible itself and yes, it can be interpreted as an allegory, but the words, phrases, and symbolisms used are mainly poetic and romantic. My opinion on this matter is that it really depends on the lyrics of the secular music. If it's promoting sin and godlessness, then by all means, don't listen to it; but if the song's theme is about a pure romantic love, friendship, brotherhood, justice, etc., then you may enjoy this form of art. If it doesn't have lyrics like the classical music, if God may be glorified in it through your appreciation to the wonderful art of music, then we may enjoy it, too.

I feel the answer to this question lies in Romans 14:14-23. There are those who feel freedom, by the Spirit, to praise in accordance to one style or another. There are those who are not free to express themselves, in the Spirit, by that same means. One style, or labeling, may lead one to praise while that same style may even seem demonic or of the enemy. For one, who may feel a "maturity" (using the language focusing on foods in Romans 14:14-23) in contemporary worship music - "Christian" music, another may not like all the instruments and it may draw them away from God in their hearts. I believe the real division occurs between that which is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and is indwelled by the Spirit, compared to man's attempt to use words and rhythms and instruments that they feel emotionally draws them into praise. A secular song, without any cursing or focus on the carnal, may lead one into a state of worship. But the real focus of Romans 14:14-23 is the edification of all in a corporate setting of worship or fellowship. If it builds up all in Christ, then it is beneficial to all in Christ. If a brother or sister stumbles, because of their lack of maturity in acceptance of another's level of faith or style of music (as Paul was using a believer's approval in eating all versus a new convert from Judaism, into Christianity, used to the old requirements of the law still fresh in the flesh of that believer), then it is detrimental to that new believer's walk. We are all at different stages of our faith. As I have grown deeper in my own walk, and stepping away from the world, I see more of the carnal in "Christian" music and different expressions by different artists. I have actually drawn away from music and do not require the music for praise like I used to. Prayer, and the Word, draws me into a worshipful state and I am overwhelmed at the presence of God around and in me. The Holy Spirit fills me with awe and wonder of the Father and Jesus Christ. It's just changed for me over the years.

You are free in your blood bought liberty to listen to music that you want to. If it directly is restricted by God in Scripture, it is best to part ways with it, but if it’s just something to bob your head to and you marvel at how God is so good that he not only saved you, but He ordained you to live in a time where you’d be able to listen to Earth Wind and Fire. Some may be convicted that it’s sin foe them. They have no biblical authority to declare its sin for you. When you listen, be aware that God Himself is the one who provides every good thing: every sip of coffee, every sunset, every good song. Let that be the place where you listen from, with that in mind. A weaker brother may stumble with something, it doesn’t mean it’s sin for you. But just make sure to not use Gods grace as a license to sin.

For many certain songs I often hear an amazing parallel between what people sing about in regard to Love and Relationship with one who has Come to Know the LORD ..some songs sound like a person is singing about Christ when in fact they are not. I find it amazing to hear at times. I do listen to some music between sermons on long walks that helps in Pondering and Musing (chewing) on what I'm hearing from SermonAudio ..and these songs, though not 'sacred' often have Meaning regardless. It's not so much how 'they intended it to mean' but how I take it. The LORD's Grace is on and with all, so who knows -- we can hear Him Speak through various means even if others are not aware of it - in that way they are Serving His People and they are not even aware of it. The B52s for example have many songs that could 'almost' be taken as 'Christian' yet they are not -- it's baffling and amazing to hear ...even like a song by Whitney Houston , 'How will I know if He really loves Me?"...I listened to it over and over again and it's as if she is singing about THe LORD..the lyrics totally work..songs by the B52s like 'Communicate"...other songs are just silly and fun...The LORD knows...I do stray totally from heavy metal now ...the heavy metal groups like Metallica and Megadeath...well, Dave mustaine seems to be more than well acquainted with EVIL..he seems to admit it, though claims to have been converted...nonetheless, I ditched all heavy metal in one day (including Aerosmith who is especially evil)

G'day, gentlemen! At 2:25, there is a comment about not wanting opera in the church service. This was the same restriction J.S. Bach was given when he was writing music for church services back in the 1700's. He did not write any operas, however his St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion were just as dramatic and impactful as any opera, perhaps more so since they dealt with the Passion of our Lord. Bach dedicated all of his compositions Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory of God alone), the focus and goal of his music. The cantata and oratorio are acceptable media for the writings in Scripture.

Just as we live in this world but, not of it (Romans 12:2) there is a distinction in music as it should be in our lifestyle as Christians. This world is not our home, we are just passing through. (Philippians 3:20). Satan was once in heaven praising God but, he wanted to be God and fell (Luke 10:18) from Heaven. He is now the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2) satan is the god of this world. If the music is not glorifying God it is secular. If the music is not drawing you closer to God then it is ungodly. I would also say that listening to secular music shows your depth in God. When you have been truly changed on the inside, you wouldn't want to hear anyting but Christian music. If the music is not exhorting or edifying it's not Christian music. While there is a lot of music" masquerading" as Christian music your spirit man should (if you're sensitive to the Spirit) will tell you that that is a counterfeit. Above all else, pray and ask God to show you. Lyrics and sound, don't be confused is a dead give away. Satan knew what praising God was about, he was there. He now influences the world, why not music. If you want to go up higher in Christ, get rid of the musical garbage going in; you will feel the difference. Is the music feeding the flesh or the spirit? Being born again we are a new creations in Christ. We should want to put away that old lifestyle and embrace the new. (2nd Corinthians 5:17). All the different genres of music that we are hearing on this Earth, will not be heard in Heaven... Only the music that glorifies God. He is a holy God.

First I'd like to thank Ligonier Ministries for all these videos. They are an essential part of my education in my Christian faith. Regarding the question of secular music I would have to ask what music? Does the music one listens to inspire their higher feelings or merely speak to their baser instincts. And in the realm of Christian music, is the presentation in accord with Christian values of modesty and chasteness. I once attended a Sunday service where a band performed truly terrible amplified rock music, with supposed Christian lyrics, where the guitar player did continual pelvic gyrations worthy of Elvis. I would also say that the congregation singing hymn together is an important and integral part of the Church experience. All of us raising our voices to God (no matter how badly out of tune) is important. A musical warm-up act is not.

And to be clear, I’m speaking of it being used as a tool to help “set the mood”. As for “secular” music, I believe it depends. Some music is secular in the sense that it’s not inherently “Christian” in it’s lyrical nature, but it’s also not promoting anything sinful. Some songs express stories, emotions, experiences and are simply informative in nature rather than persuasive.

Christian music is music directed to God for God's glory. Its praising and worshiping God in spirit and in truth. Joh 4:23 A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers. There is an evil spirit that can make you feel ashamed of the older music, there for people like to fit in with the rock and roll which will make the rock and roll people identify with you in music listening, There's a lot of churches that like to wipe out the older music all together ,And go with the newer style. That sounds more like rock and roll, and you must wonder if there is an evil spirit behind that, If there isn't why would people not just listen to both, As soon as you go with the older music people will laugh at you and mock you and ridicule you,The reason is because it's too Godly .Because Satan likes to make you feel ashamed of doing something good, That's just the way I feel about it, As soon as it sounds more like a rock and roll nobody will make fun of you because you meet them halfway at their side, however I do think it should be the other way around.

Are they sitting in Christian chairs? When they admire the classical genre of naval paintings, do they make sure the boats all have a cross? That said, it is a factor, and some art is hostile to virtue and even to Christianity itself. The main distinction is whether secular music is simply anything not christian, or music that in some way explicitly expresses secular views or values.

Music can glorify God; just like eating, sleeping, drinking, and whatever (non-sinful) activities we do can be done to the glory of God, even mundane things. But of course, if a song ventures into sinful territory, it’s clearly sinful. And there’s nothing inherently sinful about a tune (that I’m aware of); if a Christian makes a tune, and a pagan makes the same tune, does it become sinful now because a pagan made it? What about if a song is made in the same style as songs in the world? Obviously certain hymns and stuff borrowed from the musical styles of their times; for example, guitars and violins didn’t always exist, yet we use them in many songs we play, even in church. Martin Luther was no musician as far as I know, yet he took the popular songs and tunes of his day, and repurposed them with rich, theological lyrics. Most people would still play these songs in their church, like “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” (who doesn’t like that one?), and we have no problem with them. Another example would be the difference between the Psalms and the hymns we have today. While I’m sure the style and tunes of the Psalms didn’t sound like our songs and hymns today, does that make them sinful? Of course not. So if a sound isn’t inherently sinful, and words aren’t always sinful, are songs that aren’t necessarily intended to be sung during corporate worship sinful? Well, not always. The thing that could be sinful would be the lyrics, which is true of (as I understand it) most popular secular music. So we should avoid them when their lyrics are actually sinful. But in situations where there may be a stylistic difference, or the words are about (non-sinful) things, I think we have the freedom to listen to them. I love listening to classical and some instrumental songs from video games while I study, and it’s just music I love listening to. It makes my work/study time a little more enjoyable and there’s nothing sinful about “Summer” by Vivaldi, for example. It’s just art that I can use to glorify God (whether I always succeed in glorifying Him in all that I do is a different question of course 😅).

Personally I disagree with any questions or statements about whether Christians should or should not do things, obvious sin excepted. I have heard people say things like Christians should not get Insurance. When someone suggested this to me I replied that without insurance there would be no Business, and they just shrugged their shoulders. Like the question of eating or not eating meat, we are to make our own decisions according to our own conscience and before the Lord. Obviously if a song contains anti-Christian lyrics the believer will be sinning to listen to it. But secular music in itself is not something that one Christian can tell another one that he shouldn't listen to it. The word 'should' is a word that needs to be handled with care.

*Music is programming, and programming with intelligible lyrics, whether now or in the future, is even more of an influence.* We have to guard our hearts and minds in Christ. While everything (to an extent) is permissible, not everything is edifying--or good for oneself for that matter--whether towards yourself or towards others, especially the body of/bretheren in Christ.

I wouldn't say you should hear any music, as with many things in life, there are things that are convenient and others that aren't. Then, there is a matter of conscience and my conscience may go different than somebody else's, we all have different backgrounds, culture influence, family trades and so on. The thing is how you "measure" music, what do you consider? I'd say some things: meaning of the words, concept of beauty and aesthetics, uniqueness, christian values, use of the music, technical effort, I'd even say what richness does it bring to the development of music as a human activity, considering that God gave mankind the gift of making, playing and enjoying music and developing a craft, a knowledge. To me good music or a good song makes me marvel on the posibility that God gave man to create something meaningful, or beautiful or just suprising and creative, just as the posibilities God gave men to develop science and technology for example.

I would say that music is a very strong emotional vehicle. With a lyrical additive.. Words have power.. So, the old adage comes to mind."Garbage in, garbage out".. At the end of the day, if it doesn't honor, or edify God. It's a true waste of a believers time to listen..

I'm simply dumbfounded. This is terrible advice from trusted leaders. It's as though they side-stepped the question, because most of them have made idols of secular music. "Oh, I regret selling those records." You should have burned or destroyed them, instead you enabled someone else to bathe in ungodly sonicscapes. I see many "young rulers" in this panel and comment section who will not destroy these idols. Please, if it doesn't glorify Christ, don't listen to it. Heed my warning.

Marty Garcia, you don't realize the insult you pay to God in refusing His gifts of great music given to us often by unbelievers. Do you not know that 75% of the great American popular songs written, approximately, between 1910 and 1965 were written by brilliant writers who were Jewish, and not believers in Christ? Many others were written by non Jews who were also non Christians. Why should we refuse to bask in these marvelous gifts which God has given to us?

I would be careful, in this instance, concerning the man who sold his old records. Now, yes, if the music was absolutely ungodly, etc. it should be burned or broken and trashed. Especially as opposed to being sold or given away, which would only contaminate someone else, with their blood on the original owner's hands, so to speak. But, the fact is, in this man's case, although he did not specify, but he could have very well had some Classical music records that were of Godly composers like J. S. Bach or G. F. Handel (who composed "The Messiah"). What his counselor should have done is to TAKE THE TIME to sit down with him and his record collection and sorted out the good from the bad. But, see, that takes time, which some do not want to commit to in helping the Brethren in their walk with the LORD. So, just blindly tossing them all out without sorting them was foolish advice and counsel.

@@JayWC3333 , I guess things like fact, history, and logic mean more to some people than to others. I know that pietism is destructive. It always includes some sort of serious refusal of good gifts of God because they don't come from the "right" sources.

Many people ask is listening to music a sin? Should Christians only listen to gospel music? Is secular music bad? Can Christians listen to rap, rock, country, pop, r&b, techno, etc. Music is extremely powerful and it can have a huge effect on how you live your life. There is no denying that music can influence you in a negative or positive way. This is a tough topic that even I have struggled with. 25 Important Bible Verses About Music Although the main purpose of music is to worship God, Scripture does not restrict believers to only listening to Christian music. The problem is that most secular music is satanic and they promote things that God hates. Secular music is very catchy and they have the best melodies. My flesh would rather listen to secular music. When I first got saved I was still listening to music that talks about shooting people, drugs, woman, etc.
