YES!!! Christians SHOULD read the Apocrypha. Here's why...
Hello, everyone. Pastor G here, and welcome to Biblical Elucidations, where we shine light on the scriptures to show truths that once seen, cannot be unseen. Let us have a look; it is in the Holy Book!
Did you know that two-thirds of Christians already include the Apocrypha in their biblical canon? That's correct-both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches see these texts as essential to the Bible. Even if the Protestant tradition does not consider them canonical, they are extremely valuable to read. According to Martin Luther, "Apocrypha: these books are not held equal to the Sacred Scriptures and yet are useful and good to read."
So, why read the Apocrypha? Because the New Testament writers themselves read these works! Understanding what they read allows us to better understand how they interpreted scripture and how it influenced their compositions. These texts shaped their beliefs, theological ideas, and interpretations.
Insights on Righteousness and Covenant:
Righteousness and Covenant Insights:
- Wisdom of Solomon 1:15 - "For righteousness is immortal."
- Sirach 18:20 - "Before judgment examine thyself, and in the day of visitation thou shalt find mercy."
- Wisdom of Solomon 18:22 - "So he overcame the destroyer, not with strength of body, nor force of arms, but with a word subdued he him that punished, alleging the oaths and covenants made with the fathers."
- Sirach 44:11-12 - "With their seed shall continually remain a good inheritance: and their children are within the covenant. Their seed standeth fast, and their children for their sakes."
These writings enrich our understanding of New Testament references to righteousness and covenant, linking us to eternal life and God's promises to the patriarchs.
Embrace Diversity Within Christianity: Recognizing that these writings are used in other branches of Christianity promotes a more inclusive view of biblical studies. Contrary to common opinion, the Bible isn't just for Protestants.
Discover Historical and Theological Insights: The Apocrypha has a wealth of information that ties us to the early church's world and enriches our comprehension of Scripture.
Remember that this channel is called 'Biblical Elucidation', not 'Denomination Elucidation'. I want to expose the full scope of biblical wisdom. Reading the Apocrypha honors the depth and breadth of our common Christian heritage.

Thank you. The information you gain by watching this channel will surely start some interesting conversations around the dinner table. But always remember that your study is to show yourself approved unto God, as a workmen that has no need to be ashamed and is able to rightly divide the word of truth.

Excellent commentary! I really appreciated the insightful references to Martin Luther's views on the Apocrypha. The points about how these books influenced the beliefs and writings of the New Testament authors, as well as the enriched understanding of concepts like righteousness and covenant, were particularly enlightening. The excerpts you shared from Luther's preface were also fascinating - his recognition of the Apocrypha as "useful and good to read" despite not being considered canonically equal to Scripture. This video has definitely piqued my interest in exploring these texts more deeply to broaden my biblical knowledge.

Thank you so much for watching and engaging! Many Bible readers are unaware of the many resources we have available to us that quickly debunk MOST if not all of the misinformation and fallacies that continue to spread. Thats why I like to share exactly what Luther said in his own writings! I have another video coming soon that will deal with whether or not Luther thought the Apocrypha was inspired or not…

This goes in reverse, too. The Protestant Apocrypha has II Esdras, which is a real gem, and it gives a window on how people felt after 70 AD, or maybe during the bar Kokhba rebellion. Roman Catholics would do well to consider it. Orthodox has III Maccabees, which is the best biblical book about fencing the altar. The Syrians have several more Psalms, all good and much of it found in Qumran. What is retained in each collection says a lot about the community, and it's among the best things from those communities.

I highly suggest you read the complete Apocrypha. You will understand God’s good and perfect will better. I don’t want to sit here and be Pedantic about something most people don’t understand yet. But I suggest you know the twelve mysteries of God written in the 66 books of the Bible. 1 Corinthians 4:1-2. If you call yourself a Steward of Jesus Christ. You must know the twelve mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in a steward that a man be found faithful.

I agree so much. However, I feel like there needs to be a caveat presented among the church...this isn't "secret" or "hidden" or "forbidden" knowledge. And honestly, books like Tobit and Judith, are well...downright boring. There's no redemption arcs or human drama that the Bible is known for...just righteous people being righteous. Secondly, Paul and the other New Testament writers wrote VASTLY GREATER things by using the Apocrypha/DeuteroCanonicals/Preferred Term You Like. For example, Wisdom of Solomon 7 talks about how Wisdom does all of these wonderful things, which Paul rebuts in 1 Corinthians 13 regarding love that we hear ad nauseum at weddings. With that added flavor, it brings new meaning to the original scripture.

The Apocryphal better known as the Deuterocanonical books were always considered scriptures. Until the reformers removed them

Thank you for watching and engaging. I appreciate you and I completely agree with you about the Apocryphal books. However the reformers did not remove them.

@@gclmedia good morning! I would invite you to look into Early Catholic Church council like the Council or Rome where the cannon of Scripture was decided. They settled of 73 book which where re-examined throughout future church councils and we’re all reaffirmed Compare that to the reformers when they settled on their Bible (King James) and you will see when these books were removed. Apocryphal as they call it means “Hidden”, but their nothing hidden about these books since they were always in the Bible since it was first composed.

You are so right! I cannot forget about my Coptic and Assyrian Brothers and Sisters. They both have incredibly rich histories and have preserved ancient traditions and liturgies that contribute significantly to the diversity within our Christian faith to be forgotten or overlooked. I most often mention the Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism to kind of categorize but never to minimize the others! Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

before i started reading the bible, i read enoch, enoch has connection in the bible, when i started reading the bible, i felt a curiosity to read the apocrypha, i am thinking now that was the holy spirit. now i cannot have a bible without the apocrypha, the sad thing is most english bibles with apocrypha have missing verses in them, the cepher as far as i see is probably the best to have, bit bulky though. right now i am using the thomas nelson kjv with apocrypha, nice bible, but the apocrypha has typos in it.. of course lol

@@gclmedia look into the gospel of Nicodemus, I am very convinced it is an actual gospel because scripture backs it up, in mat 27:19 when pilots wife tell him to have nothing with this just man, that is found in Nicodemus chapter 2 near the beginning, the book even mentions jannas and jambres found in 2 Timothy and even jasher. There are other bible references I just don't remember then atm. That is an interesting read, Satan also gets replaced with Adam, near the end of the book, which is backed up by John 12: 31 and John 14:30 when Jesus proclaims that the ruler of this world will be cast out, because when Jesus died and went to shoel to claim his people and locked up Satan, it was all apart of God's plan to save us.
