The question of whether Christians should watch horror movies has a pretty clear divide within the Christian community. But is it "bad" for any Christian to watch horror movies? The answer isn't as straightforward as it may seem...

I always grew up with a strong mentality so honestly nothing really bothers me when watching any kind of movies. But I also want to make it clear that i believe in god and he's the reason why im confident and feel like nothing will take over me because my tough skin and my believe in god won't let anything take over

Thank you for showing truth and not just putting a blanket statement over the genre. I'm a youth pastor and I enjoy horror movies. I agree that it should be about your personal convictions and how the Holy Spirit leads you. There are too many Christian outlets that take extreme views or make movies sound like there are demons in everything. Thank you for bringing truth and not just your own personal bias.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Drake! We definitely believe in equipping young believers to make wise, godly choices vs. giving them a list of dos and do-nots. That kind of discipleship leads to legalism, fear, and anxiety--and teens have enough of that to deal with already!

"spoiler allert" i watched a series named "lock and key" its about some kids finding keys in their new home and it unlocks different things like give you the abillity to travel in time, teleport with the help of a door etc, they find out that the keys is forged with a demon souls and they realise that nothing good comes from the abillities the keys offer and decide to get rid of all the keys. its very similar to sin in our lives, sin can be "good" in short term but in the end hurt us or others. and the series shows that so clear that i felt it was a christian message in the end of the story. im glad that i saw that show.

As a Christian. The exorcist is the best horror movie about faith in god because it’s not about the demonic Regan . Its about father Damien karras , we see him as he feels guilty of his mother dying then to see him restore his faith in god when he sacrificed his life . Then Chris MacNeil turns from being a atheist turned believer. This is a movie also about good(father Karras , Regan , Chris and Father Merrin) vs The Evil(Pazuzu) and the good won. William Peter blatty has stated he cringes when he heard horror because it’s apart of his Faith in god Trilogy(Exorcist , ninth configuration and legion) . The director said that the exorcist is about the mystery of faith . The omen maybe a dark movie but it straight up takes inspiration from The book of revaluation

I’m a Goth and a Christian and I love horror movies. The horror and fantasy genre are my favorite fiction genres. My favorite kind of horror and fantasy is dark fantasy. I feel like it depends on how much someone can handle. A lot of people are sensitive to gore etc. but not all. If they can’t handle horror then they shouldn’t watch.

@412teens
@412teens 3 года назад
I am so sorry that you've been getting bullied for being Goth. That is terrible and something that others, especially Christians who should really know better than to bully people, should not be doing. They don't see your heart or know you; they're judging you based solely on what they see on the outside. God searches the heart (1 Chronicles 28:9), and the heart is what we should seek to understand before judging someone by how they choose to dress or by the interests they choose to nurture. You cannot make them see who you are, but if you can remind yourself of who you are--your inner self, the person God created uniquely and wonderfully--they cannot break you. Praying for you today, Vincent, that God will bring you peace and strength in the midst of these times. Thank you for the advice. I haven’t gotten bullied for it recently I was wondering what to do in case i get picked on for being Goth again. Also I became a big Harry Potter fan recently. @412teens
@412teens 3 года назад
@@vincentfox9267 Great question! There's definitely a camp of Christians who are anti-Harry Potter. And honestly, at this point, if someone has decided that they don't like Harry Potter or they think it's evil, that is their own personal conviction and one you may not be able to influence. Whether a Christian chooses to watch Harry Potter is a matter of personal conviction since it is one of those things kind of like horror movies. It might be fine for some but detrimental for others. The best we can do when other Christians have differing personal convictions from our own is to pay them the kind of respect that we would like them to give back to us (Luke 6:31). p.s. We actually have an article on 412teens about Harry Potter! 412teens.org/qna/are-movies-like-Harry-Potter-okay-for-Christians.php

I’ve read an article about vampire and occult entertainment and it says that being selective about we watch/listen to has nothing to do with legalism but wisdom and that our lives are much stricter when grace and not law is in control and that claiming that god doesn’t care about what we watch/listen to is a justification of wrong doing and that to suggest that what we watch/listen to is not important to god is to alter his word. Is this true or false and please explain why. The author also quotes 2 Timothy 19:21.
@412teens
@412teens 2 года назад
It is true that God DOES care what we allow into our minds, as Colossians 3:17 says, "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." At the same time, God also wants us to make good choices for ourselves based on how the Holy Spirit guides us (John 16:13). What we watch is not a matter of "saved or not saved," but rather a matter of personal conviction between each person and God. (See Romans 14.) Also, 2 Timothy 19:21 does not exist, so I'm not sure what passage they were referring to. 🤔

I recently watched The VVitch. And as a Christian, I gotta say, that is definitely not the kind of movie I would watch more than once. The acting and writing is brilliant, and the dialect they use is beautiful. But exposing yourself to so much twisted media can be extremely unhealthy. So I just don’t think about it, plain and simple. I watch something, and if I feel like it’s too much, I will immediately focus on something positive. I focus on nature, the warm sun, the positive qualities of good people, etc The horror genre in general is okay in small doses. After all, it’s only entertainment, but like almost anything else, it can hurt you like drugs. Fiction cannot hurt you unless you allow it.

God's Word helps us choose what is morally acceptable and reject what is a form of evil. Psalm 119:9 asks: "How can a young man keep his way pure?" The answer: "By guarding it according to your word." Also, the psalmist wrote, "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11). As far as Psalm 101, it would be wise to study any Bible verses you are looking at in context. That means that you need to understand what the author was saying as a part of the whole chapter/book. The Bible was not meant to be read like a collection of fortune cookies--with unrelated snippets that can be used however you wish. The Bible is an entire entity that God asks us to examine properly. More on reading the Bible in context here: 412teens.org/qna/what-does-it-mean-to-read-the-Bible-in-context.php

There's a very simple way to find out if something is a sin or not, and we actually made a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IHs0FqYpH6k.html

There are actually videos on RU-vid that say superhero’s (some videos even talk about Star Wars, Disney, despicable me,etc) are satanic because they are “false gods”,have subliminal/satanic/anti Christian/atheist/agnostic/ungodly imagery/details/morals,are rich (like Batman and Ironman ),have supernatural/occult powers (ok that ones kind of understandable actually),have protagonists that sin and/or are villains,are based off of unclean animals(like Spider-Man and also Batman),the villains (coincidentally)symbolizes god and the hero’s s (also coincidentally) symbolize satan and/or followers of satan and/or fallen angels and/or the villain is the creator of the universe and/or is depicted as a cruel and heartless tyrant and/or god,Jesus and all the biblical events are wiped clean from history and/or are based off of pagan gods and mythology and are based off of or have aspects taken from different religions (for example: marvel studios: eternals) and basically a bunch of other ridiculous reasons. Are they really telling the truth or are they just (unknowingly) making ridiculous reasons by (also unknowingly) taking scripture way too seriously then it should be taken?
@412teens
@412teens 2 года назад
Whenever someone makes blanket statements that a whole genre of media is "satanic," it is wise to question that. For something to be "satanic," it would need to be truly evil or directly related to Satanism. Is it possible for Satan to USE something that is not directly satanic? Yes, of course. But that doesn't mean that we have to fall for any of his lies or schemes. As the apostle Paul said, "God did not give us a Spirit of timidity, but a Spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:7). We should not allow ourselves to be controlled not by our old sinful nature, but rather by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). He helps us in our weakness (v.26), which gives us the strength to stand firm in the face of temptation. The Holy Spirit also guides us in truth (John 16:13), so we can use our spiritual discernment about which kinds of movies we watch and what we allow to influence us. If something is influencing us negatively, then we would want to skip out on that.

@@412teens what would something have to be in order to be truly evil and/or directly related to satanism?
@412teens
@412teens 2 года назад
As we said, we have the Holy Spirit to discern good from evil. Some things the Bible is very clear are sin for us to practice in our lives. When it comes to "gray areas," we should not try to make those calls apart from the Holy Spirit because we can easily get sucked into a legalistic checklist on what is allowed and not-allowed.

I’ve watch a video about occultism,witchcraft,magic,questionable and controversial beliefs and philosophical themes evident in fictional media and it says that we should not use the it’s just fiction,it’s not real,these specific versions only come form non demonic forces,it’s imaginary and part of the creators imaginations,it’s just entertainment,your being over spiritual,etc arguments as excuses and justifications whenever we feel convicted towards them and then quotes 2timothy 4:3 and then says that the beliefs of their creators are a refutation to the arguments I mentioned earlier (for example: the marvel villain galactus is inspired and based off of god and George Lucas admits Star Wars is a thin basis for theology and that parts of it are derived from the Bible therefore it is not just fiction and that it is what their creators genuinely believe in their own hearts) and that those arguments and statements come from a place with a lack of knowledge and that according to Luke 12:48 god won’t judge us for what we don’t know and that once you know these things you will be judged because you no longer unaware of what those creators believe and that 1 cor 6:12 actually means just because something isnt a sin dosent mean you should do it (even though he says that doesn’t mean you can’t do it again) and that those who know the in depth background of fictional media but still mark it all up to just being fiction will be judged harder than those who are just simply casual viewers and no clue that some comic pioneers (writers,artist and creators) have openly said some clear blasphemy mistakes over the years and that even though it’s a matter of personal conviction and it is your choice to enjoy those things we will still be judged for what we know. This is such an individual thing. We cannot say "this movie is fine" and "this movie is not" in universal terms. For some people, watching Scream or Halloween might simply serve as entertainment. For others, it might invite irrational fears into their hearts. This is why it's so important to use our spiritual discernment when we make these kinds of decisions about what entertainment we allow into our minds. I am a Christian, and love traditional horror movies(meaning virtually anything up til about 2005, or so). In today's culture, it's kind of hard to say. Today's culture is nihilistic, and stunted, and perverse...and I'm not even talking about the horror films...Back before, even things like horror films and soap operas and other things that people criticized as immoral...had a MUCH stronger moral compass than anything made in recent years. I don't know how any Christian, or anybody of just reasonable taste, could watch most of the contemporary filth, be it horror, comedy, drama, sci-fi, or whatever....

While some of the best horror movies I've seen are Christian in nature (The Exorcist, The Conjuring, Dracula Untold, The Nun), one of THE WORST horror movies I've seen was also Christian, Paranormal: The Truth Shall Set You Free. Bad filmmaking, atrocious acting, super predictable, laughably unrealistic in its attempt at edginess ("...do that thing you do to make babies..."), etc. Just something to think on.

If its demonic or paranormal I believe its sinful or at the least posion for the human mind. Any horror that depicts extreme gore, decapitation is also detestable in the eyes of God because movies glorify this unadulterated violence. One also has to think of the warped minds that come up with the materials that the masses watch as entertainment. Like Paul said, that which is noble, holy, pure and good think of that and keep those things in your mind. God has not given us a spirit of fear, and many times this is what these horror movies try to elicit.
