Should drone regulations be based on myths and disinformation? (part 2)

Those who fly a drone or RC plane in the UK have the opportunity to take a stand over the ridiculous over-regulation proposed in the UK CAA's CAP2610 "Remote ID" regulations. These proposed changes are far more about control than they are about identifying drones and their operators.
Should UK hobbyists hand over the keys to the hobby without a wimper or should they summon up a fist-full of testicular fortitude and stand their ground -- refusing to bow to the ridiculous over-regulation planned for the hobby?
CAA UK, where is the evidence, where are your facts?
A huge thanks to the many heroes who help me work on behalf of the hobby to inform, support, promote and protect its interests by way of contributions through Patreon:

and via channel memberships:

We must remember it’s a toy and a hobby and as you said they can’t carry the extra weight and kids can’t afford all Thea hobby cost. So may be this should be for commercial drones and over a certain weight. I flew r/c aircraft for years also added cameras and all we needed was a certified plane certificate but not for filming but a weight and size and the only height restrictions were in certain places and yes this was a hobby too

As a modeller for well over 60 years,quietly flying my radio control models along with similar minded friends,I shall continue uninterrupted. We fly in the middle of nowhere and have never had a single complaint,primarily because the nearest habitation is over half mile away. We are not CAA registered and never will be. As to the boys in blue checking up,we haven't seen a police car anywhere near our site in over ten years. We will not bow down to all this bullshit nonsense,where the CAA is desperately trying to control all lower airspace so 'get rich quick' drone companies think they can make a financial killing and sod everyone else. The business model is flawed anyway,because the first commercial drone that falls from the skies with a technical failure and kills or seriously injures an innocent member of the public,will result in their demise pretty smartish. All the consultation in the world,dreamt up by technical illiterate lunatics in the corridors of power,will not result in sensible controls of our hobby,rather they would prefer to crush underfoot any opposition. I believe our national body here in the UK ,has given in to this nonsense,without putting up a serious fight. The whole business of pilot registration and ID's etc is a farce as it's totally unenforceable anyway. Our little group will continue to enjoy ourselves as we always have done. Eventually the whole thing will die the death,as these crass ideas always do.

I'm from Australia, and things here are bizarrely improved. Last year the rule was anything over 250g had to be registered - that was mysteriously paused. Now registration is gone - as long as you are further away than 5.5KM from a controlled airport, you can fly anything up to 1KG. Maybe it's even 2KG. Zero mention of drone ID. Usual rules apply, like distance from people and altitude, but I'm watching everywhere else in the world with much intrigue. I'm curious why Australia has seemed to have relaxed about it all.

Have been flying model aircraft, mainly fixed wing, for over fifty years and will continue to do so. I like yourself have always flown safely and never had an accident that caused harm (I'm ignoring the numerous sliced fingers messing with Cox. 049s in the early days) I will continue as I always have in the UK. until they find me, steal my gear and lock me up. I did visit the CAA consultation online but after spending more of my time than I expected, and very confused, . I decided not to give them my information and details of my hangar contents.My grandkids will continue to fly indestructible and rudimentary air hogs foamies with potatoes for cameras. How I loved the 80’s, where I flew my Robbe Parat up till it was just a blip in the sky. When my 4cc engine ran out of juice, I trimmed it for an optimal glide slope, lay down in the grass and gently guided it down. Longest flight was about 45 minutes. Happy times, really. It must have weighed about 1 kilogram. The Hawk(special order from England) 10 cc was about 3,5 kilos. I never had any accidents. Perhaps I should turn to a joint when I want to get high. Or join a war, I don’t think these operators have remote ID. Indeed, regulation is killing our hobby. How will we be able to have creative invention when we’re ruled by burocracy?

👍👍 Bruce - It's not just Western countries that are regulating our beloved hobby into the ground, the former Land of Smiles also has draconian rules. If anyone gets caught flying any unregistered UAV, even toy or hobby category, the minimum fine is 100,000 Thai baht (~$3000 USD) ...AND... the threat of 1 year in jail! Any RC flying thingee that has a camera, must be registered, no matter how nano-tiny. And the registration process is a nightmare here in post-2014-illegal-military-coup 'paradise' where that general's rabid anti-technology paranoia and superstition has filtered down and spread like a cancer throughout every government agency here. Hopefully the recently 'unelected' PM will undo some of the former Kim Jong-Un wannabe's damage, but I doubt it. And I've mentioned this before, IMO the FAA is the worst of the worst, because it obviously intends to completely smother our beloved hobby out of existence to make way for lucrative corporate drone traffic that must not be infringed upon by pesky children of all ages enjoying their flying toys in vacant fields and lots. Considering that sad realization, I truly believe that Americans taking a stand against FEDERAL over regulation is simply tilting at windmills as we Americans simply no longer have a voice in government. Anyway, we all appreciate your efforts Bruce. Happy New Year buddy!

They can come up with as many regulations as they want. People will just bypass any arming & takeoff tokens, restrictions, etc. And other hobbyist will just not comply and add this non-sense to their craft and therefor will never comply. Further, if some ill-witted person has malicious intent, they will simply not put a remote-ID module on the drone. So all these regulations just cost tax-payer money, that could be spend otherwise in a more useful way. Amazing how the developed world finds more and more ways to slow innovation and progress through silly regulations, giving other countries a good chance to catch-up and overtake. Sickening, simply sickening. Spend the money on the conversion from fossil fuels to renewables, be better for everyone. Thanks Bruce! Love your videos. Keep chugging mate. You are a true legend! 👍👍

The sheriff just raises a fear campaign prior to the budget vote. Like what the FAA is doing. It's almost impossible to fight - people listen to their fear. Over just about everything else. I completed the CAA consultation. The exercise is very poor and has little evidence of the need for RID. Public bodies need to undertake an Equalities Impact Assessment to show policies do not unfairly discriminate. RID discriminates against people on a low income as the costs linked to this will be a pay wall. We should insist that CAA publish the EIA and get them to justify the unfairness of this.

The issue is not over-regulating drones but holding the government accountable for the millions they waste to implement their stupid regulations! EVERYONE (not just a few drone owners) who is taxed should have a say in how that money is spent! You highlight the fact that ALL flight data is collected and accessible. If the government needs money, they simply sort the data by attitude and fine pilots for any flights above 400ft! That is a huge cash cow!

What astounds me is that you do not hear much from the company's that make and sell RC planes or Multi Rotors. Have they given up? Don't they want to fight and lobby for their survival? Why don't they combine and put out some public awareness campaign's in the main stream media to educate the public that the bureaucrats are killing this safe hobby. Many people I speak to don't know this is happening and feel it is an overreach. These hobby manufacturers and stores will have to change to selling RC cars and Boats and many of them will go out of business.
@xjet

Given that Ukraine claims it will be building a million drones this year, I suspect that all the drone companies have a much bigger market opportunity in becoming suppliers to the military than the recreational user. I doubt they'd sell even a tenth that number each year to hobbyists.
@josephr450
@josephr450 6 месяцев назад
Hello XJet, that may be so but not every manufacturer makes drones that can be used for military purposes and the war will end one day. What do they do after that and what happens to all of the great models of spitfires etc. that we all love to make and fly. What about all of those company's that make bits and pieces? Foamies will be a thing of the past and future children will loose the opportunity to make and fly their own creation as we have done in the past. You mentioned in your video what the UK modelers should do. I will imagine they will be the same as US modelers and just not do very much to protect their freedoms. Most could not be bothered or they will allow the wool to be pulled over their eyes with hollow promises from the regulators. The only way change can be affected is for mass demonstrations where it is covered by main stream media and this topic becomes news on the front pages of the news papers and TV of a night. The hobby needs to make the public aware of the misinformation that is being presented by the regulators and some in the media. Alas, I don't think it will happen. I hope over time I am proven wrong and the hobby does not die as it could. Here in Australia, we are no different, the silence from the hobby is overwhelming and CASA will quietly do the same.

For the UMPTEENTH time, as could have been EASILY determined (as I DID) during the hype over the 2015 Christmas Drone Apocalypse in the US (which, of course, never materialized) by researching online what they were ACTUALLY worried about, "the ridiculous over-regulation" is a cover their arses attempt ("But, we did everything we could!) to prevent the INTENTIONAL misuse of cheap FPV drones, that misuse being displayed in droves in various modern military conflicts. Pointing out that RC aircraft are perfectly safe when not intentionally used as guided weapons ENTIRELY misses the point.

Hi, really enjoyed both videos. My only point is whether we should be making a distinction between hobbyists and 'others' By fracturing the the use of drones into different subsections I fear you may weaken support. I have seen this first hand in the UK when the Govt seeks to restrict something and all the various users jump into their respective camps and the weakened resistance is crushed by the legislation. I don't fly as a hobby but as a commercial operator.

Reading between the line of the latest BMFA edicts, it would seem that all RC flying from UK gardens, fields, even private grass airstrips are to be sacrificed and CAA approved BMFA affiliated 'Club' sites promoted. Many flier groups in the SW of UK number 10 or fewer members and they look like losing out also. A slow resistance is gradually growing, but how effective it will be awaits to be seen.

Yes, the hobby must not be confined to RC prisons (grassy fields in the middle of nowhere) or we lose our public profile and the flow of new blood into the hobby simply stops.

The UK governmental control and over reach extends far and wide. EV smart charges call home and ask.... Can we charge this? They already have EV legislation ready to go that says... Only OEMs can change the spec of the car. All sorts of heating will soon become illegal to use. We have lost so many freedoms in the UK in the last 20 years. Its the slow boiling frog. Bit by bit.. Its getting warmer.

Just before "Drones",... there was a burgeoning business in aerial photography . R/c heli's were being used to take pictures and film for gladly paying customers, and big screen filmmakers, real estate agents, -anyone who needed an aerial shot. . It was far cheaper than having to hire a real heli pilot and copter,which would cost thousands of $$. Now every man and his dog can do it - for a small investment. This has put those businesses on a back foot in regards to potential income. Businesses making income pay taxes. Hobbyists, drone pilots /operators dont have to charge hire anyone you can do it for your self . See the problem? Thats maybe ONE of the reasons they want us gone or force us to pay one way or another for the lack of taxes we generate by not getting a "professional" tax paying drone operator to do it for us!. Thats right , the Govts just want us to pay one way or another , for getting our own free shots. The "powers that be" want to tax you for having an aerial camera.

I'm in the USA. Today's laws will only get revised to worse laws. I haven't bought a remote ID module because I know that the current laws are only temporary and experimental. If I cave in and spend a hundred dollars, it will shortly be made obsolete. This hobby is hard enough to keep up with all the new technology. The other thing that bothers me is that registration leads to confiscation or imprisonment. Is it really worth it? You really need to count the costs.

In my case... I don't care too much about consequences. What are they going to do to me that age and Parkinson's isn't already doing? :-) I figure we only have a limited time to enjoy ourselves on this planet so as long as we're not harming others then we should "go for it". Sadly, others may not have this luxury.

@xjet When it goes into full effect here, I think that they're going to take a half dozen people and make examples out of them. I could be wrong. I hope that I am wrong. Our government is a wreck right now. I agree with your views on this. I'm probably going to focus on the part of the hobby that doesn't involve interactions with a thuggocracy.

excellent! And how safe are commercial drones, "air taxis" & "flying cars"? Those vehicles aren't safe at all and what about the environment? We got still birds, bats and insects and nobody can actually want a sky full of heavy drones and other big vehicles flying below 400 ft over their property and family.

Unfortunately, I can't say I'm surprised, Bruce. That's why governments need to have limitations, even on what they can regulate! And we don't have it. So, honestly, I don't even know how to fight it. The only thing I've seen working is when people just ignored the law and it ended up not being enforced... But it's not exactly our case, is it? Anyway, let's see what happens. But, either way, that's why I bought a cheap rc car and 4 oil shocks to fit in it to do FPV. 😕 Anyway... Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Here in the UK I am aware that one of the two clubs available to me has seemingly closed. I used to belong to it 12 years back and it had a membership well in excess of 50. The other club with a similar membership seems very quite on it's FB page. Although you may think the membership numbers are low this is a very sparsely populated part of the UK. I gave up several years back as I could see the writing on the wall way before that and I've been aero modelling since 1956. This is but a very small part of the overall plan of total control, impoverishment and subjugation of humanity. I've never worn a tin foil hat. Look around you and see the bigger picture (they don't want us to have cars and personal mobility/freedom but to live in smart cities/ 15 min zones etc We've already got this in the UK). Just thought I'd add that I don't have a 'smart phone' (they identify, track and trace you even when TURNED OFF) so I and many others will be excluded from the hobby.

Bruce, the CAA U.K. keep on citing security issues. It’s not part of their remit. We have various security services/ agencies who deal with security. The only security the CAA should be dealing with is the security of their own computer systems. Tis a load of bollocks to be honest. If introduced, then me as a drone flier is actually going to be less secure as any criminal type could download an app on their phone, locate me and come and take my expensive equipment off me. Will I have a case against the CAA for loss/ damages should this happen ?

I don't fly like a lunatic or disobey flight rules, but this whole idea that the Hobby will die is a bunch of nonsense. Remote ID is a bunch of nonsense. It's Drama, Much Ado about nothing. The lawmakers can put out as many laws as they want. People ultimately decide how they want to fly. There's nothing a politician or lawmaker can do about it, and in reality no one really cares. Enforcement of it is a joke. There's only a threat to the Hobby if the hobbyists' surrender.

From Australia. Been flying rc planes helis and these days mainly drones for about 12 years. Im retired and besides watching the endless supply of light aircraft crash videos flying drones (we need a less negative name) is my main interest and one of the few things that gets me out of the house. Plus we have Parks Victoria make regulations to outlaw all drones. I have just about given up (big cheer from CASA). It is non worth the stress.

There's been local protests near me about the errection of some new housing estates. I've been warning of this for years and *nobody* would listen. And now it's too late. I really hope we can push back the tide on this but my experience has been, like in the above that people *will not* take action until it's too late. And then they'll claim ignorance. I don’t know why the CAA keep harping on about “security “ It’s surely not part of their remit ? Please publish these “security risks” or at least some examples of these risks.

Well, after 3hrs filling in the consultation document (including reading the relevant sections of the CAA document) I was not too surprised to find a few loaded questions regarding security and RID, very easy to inadvertantly agree with it. Clearly, the whole Remote Identity aspect is a done deal, as said by many people, the first consultation was ignored and both it and this second 'consultation' a box ticking exercise. Why do they refer to it as a consultation as the very definition of the word does not apply? None Compliance will be the only way forward! I found it amusing that RID will also be required for Control Line Models (tethered flight) I hate George Orwell, he wrote a Fiction current Western Governments see as a Manual for the way forward in Governing the Populace

Funny how the book that Bruce cites at the start of the video touches this exact subject. The protagonist asks someone what the best recreational activity would be, and the answer is "whatever needs the most complicated and costly gadgets, so that the most contribution to the economy is achieved". Well, at that time, Internet wasn't a thing yet, and today's answer would probably also mention that those costly gadgets should enable a trackable online presence mandated by the almighty Ford. Which is exactly what those Remote ID modules with cellular data plans and GPS modules are.
