It sounds like "GoodHonestVillain" is confused about history as far as the United States is concerned. It's been (astutely) argued that slavery was PART of the underpinning of the Revolutionary war. The proverbial writing was on the wall & is all the more evident when the UK outright banned slavery in 1834. Even before 1834, the Royal Navy would stop slave ships in the Atlantic & take the people back to ports in West Africa, think the Amistad case of 1839. The translator was freed by the Royal Navy & assisted the Mende people. The American congress passed a law PROHIBITING the importation of slaves because of the aggression of the Royal Navy attacking slave ships.
