Should Homework be Banned? | Is Homework Beneficial? | Should students have homework?

As a Brit, I thought it was insane when I learned that US school children have 8 hour school days and are _still_ expected to do 1-3 hours of homework every day. How can you *_not_* fit everything a kid needs to learn in an 8 hour school day?!

The Scandinavians have little homework and tests but they always score on the top 5 in the world. I think that homework should be light but central to what was taught so that students don't forget the info.

Yes it should, kids need an escape... they need to adventure and life is more than text books... and those who don't do homework aren't dumber... Homework should be for those who need extra practice

If the work cannot be done whilst at the school, then it should not be given. Home is for home time, school is for school time. Homework superimposes itself on all aspects of the students life. Teach kids what they need to know, give the work they must complete AT SCHOOL. Make the days an hour longer if needed, but when a kid goes home, that's his/her space to be, ya know, a kid.

Since leaving school I haven't needed to write a complex paper, read a book, do any calculus, do anything with science, or need to know the history of anything I was taught... and the stuff I needed to know like finance, career, taxes, bank accounts, paying bills, living in a technological changing environment, I was not taught any of this

I believe homework both has downside and it’s benefits. Downside tend to outweigh the benefits tho

They say school prepares you for the real world. Then the real world says you should never bring your work home with you. Homework is equivalent to mandatory overtime. It's just not healthy to overclock the brain. Let school be for school. Let home be for life.

Great video Dan .. My opinion is I think we need to focus on the teaching the students more then testing the students. We need to focus on what we’re teaching . Accounting , Business, Science, home skills.. Things that will benefit you in life . So much stuff taught is a waste . Just my opinion .

Since leaving school I didn't need to know 95% of what I was taught, most of it was errored like history or will be outdated like science and is cherry picked like English and Language arts and literature, and mathematics was not essential compared to what was taught

Cramming more information down my throat and giving me work to do can take a child and cut their ability to focus or want to grow, we can't even process what we just learned, we're on to the next lesson before we learned the last one

It depends on the subject you teach, if it’s categorized as a skill, like a language learning, then homework is substantial But if the subject is classified as knowledge, like history or geography, then it can be an extra burden on students with out really benefiting them

I’m a teacher of 3rd graders. I prefer students to do work in class. But I have 26 students. Students are behind, due to COVID. So when parents can help their child, with using a limited time at home, I like that. Reading and studying math facts can be done at home under 20 minutes a day.

School is an overwhelming problem to kids and why do you think we hate learning so much... it is overbearing... many schools want you to do school 8 hours a day and then homework for 4 more hours... teachers layer on huge tests and projects and you never know when they'll overlap...

It feels more like busy work even in college the only homework I've really deemed as beneficial to get done is scripting assignments and boy are they stressful to get in on time. I much more prefer studying on my own time and picking the subject that I want to focus on for that day I usually try to study about 6 hours a day a lot better than just doing homework and feeling nothing else needs to be complete.

Homework help you prioritize and manage your time. Even if you don't want to go to college and pursue a trade it will benefit the person.

If the maturing still developing children are full time students why do homework? Do you really want to force full time work and some more time up and NONPAID but supposedly the forced attendance...and the forced education labor.... that's not acceptable to adults who are also supposedly granted worker rights and protections. Yet freedom or liberty isn't valued when freedom of speech to not accept the forced nonpaid labor that requires greater than 40 + hours of work...it includes preparation time. Travel time. Cleaning sorting proving to family .. .not a lazy failure. It taxes the developing brain and body and prevents its recovery from the stressors. It also requires greater food, water, nutrients. I dont agree with the popular popular methods. It's about controlling and supposed owning others deemed property or 'subjects'.

I understand the purpose of homework. But the schools give too much of it. In my opinion. If you are in Kindergarten to second grade, homework should take no longer than fifteen minutes. Third through fifth, no longer than a half hour. Sixth through eighth grade, no longer than forty five minutes. Older than eighth grade, no longer than one hour. Maybe ninety minutes if you're a senior. Longer than ninety minutes is too much no matter what grade you're in. 👍

YEP DEFINITELY I HATE HOMEWORK

Learning is different from normal work. If people don’t like word homework call them exercises lol. Once you learn something new you need to get the chance to apply them. And take home exercises are a way to do that. Reasonable amount of testing and homework, gives positive feedback. It allows kids to know if they truly understand the concepts being taught. Many Asian countries have school kids that beat their American counterparts in almost all academic categories. And it no surprise that Asian school kids have a lot more homework and tests. It’s true that academic success isn’t everything in life, but America is producing less scientists, engineers and PhDs. Just look at the proportion of Asians working at major tech companies.

when i saw the thumbnail.. i said no.. ive learned a lot from homeworks back in my younger years.. i remember opening my notes for the first time and answered my papers.. they gave me knowledge which i still remember to this day..

Personaly i think homework should be banned. Because i stress out a lot from it most of my headaches cones from stress and most of the stress is from homework so im against home work it gives me to much stress and no time to have fun with friends that are either online or outdoors.

Homeworks should be banned, the students should rather use the time at home to study not to write homeworks. The homeworks should replaced by weekly tests at the end of the school week based on what they were taught all week to track the progress of the students.

the useless stuff in high school so far which is almost everything has done nothing but make me feel suicidal, and i do not come from a family with money so i have no time to enjoy myself, i have to spend all my time practicing work just to barely get ok grades, deal with homework ontop of normal studying, and deal with working a job.

Homework is good, but not if it takes the average student 2 hours to complete it. My 1st grader is sent home with about an hour of homework a day, some days 2 hours. To me that's punishment. Teachers need to understand that our children have a life after-school, sports, music, clubs and most importantly a Mom and Dad who want to spend quality time together. Teachers should teach academics in, and parents should teach life skills and morality in the home.

I'd be interested in what the results were in those counties where homework was banned for Elementary School kids. As a parent, I have to say, I do appreciate knowing the curriculum. Maybe a solution could be to lengthen the school day instead? I feel like we were doing way more time in school when I was a kid. These days it seems like any excuse they have to close the school they will. There's not a single month in the calendar where there is school every day. It's usually riddled with random half days and days off, usually for the benefit of the teachers. I guess what I'm saying in my long-winded way is that this is probably a more complex problem than just ban homework or don't ban homework. I tend to think an individual approach is probably best. It depends on the homework your doing, I'm not against it, but I am concerned of what they are teaching these days and times. There were teachers who were forcing children to study the concepts that were some true and false at the same time, studying is the most sufficient for students who are striving for knowledge and truth. The students should study on there own, do there own research and take notes, that what I call mastery learning, students should pave there way in life which there curiosity and gain experience with studying.

My opinion: School shouldn't take that much time of a teenager life (not only in homework)

I’ve basically wasted 11 years and soon I will waste another for what? Having my face covered by a book at home when I could be exploring and hanging out with friends which surprisingly I have never done that. I was always the inside person doing homework and I don’t want that anymore 😤

I great teacher will teach the students without having to give them homework if she teaches correctly in the classroom, but many teachers spent their time doing personal things during class, pluss babysitting students.

If I wanted homework I would just be homeschooled and who said anything about discipline there is no discipline in homework only stress and no sleep and it's because the school system is to lazy to teacher speaking about discipline the school system should be more responsible for the students and not stress them out
