It’s always difficult to critique someone’s work, especially when you think about what is the potential motivation of sending them to you. Maybe it's an idea if people said in their letters, whether they feel comfortable with some constructive criticism (and the way you do it is both constructive and very respectful). If you ask them regularly to mention it in their letters, it might work.

Ted, you are one of the most thoughtful youtubers I know! You misstep in the kind of suggestions you made today seem to me as likely as the Queen stealing harps in heaven! Moreover, you didn't address the creative qualities other than praising them. You only talked about modes of presentation. And standing to one's art is an advice almost every artist could use from time to time! Some people are blessed with the gift of knowing how to lift up people through the right words. You are one of them. Use it!

One of my favourite podcasts used to be when Tony & Chelsea would do live photo reviews. Hearing their input about such a wide range of work each week gave me so many insights into particular genres and styles of photography, and into their particular preferences as photographers; it became so easy to take or leave their critiques but also to understand why they were making them, and helped me formulate my own tastes. It's a space that's been sorely lacking, and I feel like you critiquing submissions here opens those conversations back up in the best way. Never apologize for your critiques! lolol

Constructive suggestions (note the specific word choice!) I find, as a viewer seeking to learn, very helpful. You already do the right thing, using what my wife calls the "praise sandwich" -- praise, constructive encouragement, praise -- so keep doing that. If it had been a book of mine for which you were suggesting improvements, I would love that. So, yeah, a tasteful, occasional insertion of constructive suggestion can be a positive and widely beneficial thing!

There are a few good reasons to have your work critiqued. But the problem with the critique is that it is usually little more than an imposition from a mentor imagining how he or she would have done it. Possibly the only critiques worth mentioning are technical aspects - exposure, a problem developing the film, values, etc. Composition ability is usually picked up over time by studying images by the masters and copy them until you notice something new is coming out. Your unique style.

I would love more critiques, I think most of us that watch your channel trust you enough to know you would never say something needlessly mean or something that's not constructive. Sometimes I feel almost like I've plateaued in my creativity and in my photos, and I know it's a normal thing everyone feels at some point, and sometimes seeing someone with similar ideas or a similar workflow getting corrected in positive ways is very beneficial and opens you up to seeing things you didn't before, getting you past the plateau.

Hi Ted, Mail-time videos are among my favourites! I think the little suggestions you are making are quite valuable. Everyone is different when it comes to receiving criticism. When the criticism is constructive and comes from a desire to help, I think it is cool and helpful. At least, I would take it that way. Who knows, I may send you something someday... maybe even soon 🙂

A little well thought out constructive criticism never hurts much, it might sting at first but is of benefit to a true student in the long run. Especially advice on things like publishing your first zine. There are a few folks here that really fail at constructive criticism and have sent a precedent that makes their private FB groups borderline toxic to anyone who isn't in absolute lock step on gear, composition and processing.

Critique? No. No one should “critique” another’s work. My uncle, a professional photographer, critiqued one of my photos. Said is was too dark. The photo is of an old power plant across a river as the sun was setting behind it. Obviously the power plant was silhouetted, which was what I was going for, and is in my top 3 of favorites. Giving advice on how to do better is completely different. Understanding what the photographer was going for, and giving advice on how to take that same image better would be far more acceptable than not understanding and saying how to take the image you would want. Each of us is different. We all like to take pictures that we find interesting, and what we find interesting differs from person to person. You might want to be able to see the texture of the brick in the building, when I am taking a picture of a sunset with a building silhouetted in the foreground.

I think it would be the best thing that you could give to your youtube followers. In my honest opinion, it is the only thing, that is not freely accessible for a vast majority of youtube users. And for you - maybe it would be nice to be back in teaching for a while :D

If you get advice, get it from photographers whose work you admire. If you give advice be honest and brutal. People are too used to being cuddled. If they were being brutally honest with themselves they would see 99% of the photos they took are garbage.
