This is a great video. I’ve been a company driver for 3 years. I purchased a truck this year and started my own authority. I kept my company job while I aged my authority now I’m getting ready to hit the road 🎉 Your financial advice is similar to The Dave Ramsey Plan 👍

I'm 21 and my father has t cell lymphoma. I spent most of my time from the age of 17 taking care of him. He's made it clear to me that he doesn't want me to throw my life away. I think trucking is probably my best option with my GED. I thought about welding but I don't think I have enough math skill for that. I'm hoping to do OTR for a few years to be able to buy some land and build a tiny house. Then pivot to a local company. I think it'll also be good because my father was a Trucker in the late 80s Early 90s. Thanks for the advice. I genuinely appreciate it because I feel so lost.

thats why I didnt bother going to college. did pre calc semester and was like "yup I dont wana do this til im in my grave". Calculus is such a soulless life ending thing to do day to day. The hardest thing in trucking is knowing ur trailer is properly attached and backing up. You can do this

What math skill? most welders can barely spell their name. LOL they have fitters to do all the math. Most companies i have worked for in the oil and gas industry welders only weld.

Man i really needed this because most of the videos on this platform ive been seeing is full of people saying theres not enough money in the trucking buisness and its all indentured slavery blah blah blah. This video just reminded me that my goals are my gas and it all depends on my effort.(im 24 starting PAM transport😬 in february and i too want to be retired and finacially free atleast by my 40s these warehouse and retail jobs feel too dead end and im too smart to keep doing deadend crap!)

I served in the army before trucking. I’m 9 months solo and my pay is better than the army but for the amount of work it’s trash tbh. But the money goes farther than a normal job since you live in the truck so your expenses are lower. If you’re gonna do it make every dollar count. Follow the Dave Ramsey advice. The first 6 months or so I was taking home anywhere from $200-$600 per week. The first 3 I was in training and the second 3 I was solo but still learning. After that I started getting cpm raises, I got per diem, and the experience and knowledge started to show. Now I’m taking home about $900 per week on average. Imo the pay is still trash but it’s a starter company so after my contract I’m out. I paid off my credit cards, paid off my truck, got 6k saved in an HYSA, and halfway through paying off my car.

Now I’m just saying my opinion as a OTR for only 3 years out of California then I said no! You average about 1400 dollars a week for 70 hours a week on the clock, but add another 20 hours that are not on the clock, for things that you end up doing to make sure the load gets delivered on time or taking care of the Truck like cleaning it! Because you don’t get paid for things like that! So the pay breaks down to about 15.50 a hour! Minimum wage is 16 dollars a hour in California! So you are not even making minimum wage! And a McDonald’s burger flipper makes 20 a hour! You get home for 36 hours every 10 to 14 days! Which you spend 1/2 of it sleeping/ laundry/ grocery shopping for your next trip out! If you don’t find a spot to park your truck by 3.30pm you’re pretty much screwed! You will end up sooner or later in a snow storm no matter what they say and end up putting on snow chains freezing your butt off and hopefully your sleeper cabs heater works properly! When you’re done for the day driving and you are 1000 miles away from home you can’t go anywhere because you’re stuck with the Truck and load! You will end up in wind storms, and if your smart pull over as fast as you can! Other truckers especially foreigners throw their garbage out everywhere! Drivers coming onto the freeway squeezing by you on the right in the break down lane cutting you off while you weigh 80,000 lbs. Make sure you do your pre-trip ever morning because some other truck drive may be mad at the company your working for and did something to the Truck while you where asleep! Like pull the 5th wheel pin, cut your air line, or pull the Tandem pin! And then there is getting into the shippers that you have never been to before, even with trucker google maps, your going down the road and all of a sudden no trucks allowed, and you can’t turn around! Then the shippers like Budweiser and Coke always trying to sneak a few extra 1000 lbs onto to load, putting you over weight, then having to tell them take some of it off because it’s over weight, and them trying to tell you no that’s what the BOL says so you call your dispatcher and tell them what’s going on and they try to tell you just burn off some fuel before you go over the scales! Do you refuse the load! What do these people care they are not the ones getting the ticket and negative points on your driving record! So then Your dispatch gets mad and sends you 100 miles the opposite way to another shipper! WTF! 🤬 STICK A FORK IN ME I AM DONE!

Simple answer yes do it. Especially if you are young. Good money, you get to travel and see different parts of the country, and be your own boss. Dont listen to the haters yes it can be hard but every job is difficult in some way. If you can deal with being alone for long periods then you will be golden it beats office work and retail drama anyday.

I've been in it for 9 years. If you don't have any kids and especially if you don't have a place to stay yes get in it for a few years. Make sure you eat out of an electric skillet don't eat in the truck stops restaurants. Get a crock pot buy your food someplace cheap. Save every bit of your money and do something with it. Have a goal before you even get in the truck like you want to pay cash for a manufactured home on an acre. Make it count don't get stuck out here man. I just stepped out of my truck to buy some dark chocolate and the evening this late afternoon was so beautiful in Kansas something we never get to experience. Yeah I made $2,600 this week, but it costed me my whole life and my soul and time away from my kid. Next week it'll be less because the loads in the pay periods don't always fall the way you like. So next week like maybe 13 or 1400. Maybe 15. The more experienced you are the more you make because they don't have to spend as much insurance to have you. If you have a kid less than teens less than teens late teens don't do this. If you have a boyfriend a girlfriend or a spouse be careful.

I'm not an o/o but worked for a local job for many years then I moved and took a couple local which sucked in pay then did a regional and would spend all week staying at truck stops doing 3 loads a week. Sometimes they'd send me somewhere where there's no truck stops that have any parking ever so I'd have to pay 15 dollars a day to park.

If you take a break, it will be a lot harder to get back in. That gap in employment history will scare off most decent companies. But I would bet the real average is still around 700 per week bring home and having to be gone always. the lifestyle sux unless your a loner and dont like spending time with family and friends. I went back to CNC Machining making 30$ per hour and playing golf, fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends daily. life is to short to spend time babysitting a truck.

@Magaeatsboogers still made more than that at Amazon (warehouse worker, not a truck driver (yet)). Anyone driving for less than $1k per week either isn't putting in miles, or is being taken advantage of

Why you give people the wrong info????? Maaaan in 2024 200-300 trucking company every week close their door and go bankrupt because we have over capacity in the industry, Please be realistic and get your number from the official authority, any one can go to FMCSA website and find the truth, by doing videos like this you pushing people to a wrong way

A lot of dudes trying to make money on RU-vid by exaggerating. Pretty soon all of these guys coming into the industry from other countries will be driving for free just so they can live in the truck 😂😂

It really comes down to this….are you in your 20s working some bullshit job making no money? If so…go get your CDL…if you actually have a job that pays you $50k or more a year don’t get your CDL….simple as that lol
