IMHO; In house lawyer Pros: Less competitive Better hours Less stressful Generally better atmosphere but you're always an employee. Cons: Less challenging Restricted career/salary progression Law firm will not recruit you after you leave in house. It's relatively easy to go in house (most lawyers go in house in a company that was their client when they worked in a law firm) but it's not easy to go from in house to law firm Primary focus for a company where you are in house, means they won't focus particularly on the legal department, compared to a law firm, where it IS a legal department. If you're a fresh graduate out of law school and have the options open to you, I would definitely advise working in a law firm first and then, after 5-10 years, move in house (if ever - if you really want the safety) [or just open your own firm]. But everybody is different.

Hi! if you work in a law firm for a few years, and then go in - house, can you expect to make more $$ than someone who goes straight to in house after graduation? Like 6 - figures? And do most in house lawyers you know work 40 hours/wk? Thanks !!

As a lawyer in GA, starting out by I only made $55k and currently make only $65k going into my third years of practice. Most in house jobs start off at six figures so starting out in house I would recommend rather than niching right out of law school. When you niche right out of law school, it’s hard to make a lateral move later because you only know one area of law. This video was very bomb though! Thank you! Trying to transition into in house counsel now

Perhaps the New York law market is a lot different than the Chicago market I practice in, but I think your statement on relative pay is too black and white. A lot depends on the size of the company and the size of the firm you are comparing. Comparing like size company and firm, I'd agree with you. But a corporate lawyer working for IBM is generally going to make more than a firm lawyer working at at 4 person firm assuming similar years of practice.

Hi Brittany! 2 questions: what is the best time to leave the law firm and go in house ? 3 years? 4 years? Also - if you work in a law firm for a few years, and then go in - house, can you expect to make more $$ than someone who goes straight to in house after graduation? Thanks !!
@BrittanyTran
@BrittanyTran 3 года назад
I would say probably 3 or 4 years but it depends on how much experience you are getting and how many years of experience the job you want to apply to is asking for. Usually I see that for entry level in house positions if it's a junior level (not the general counsel etc.) it's probably at least 4 or 5 years of experience. Yes, you would most likely make more money if you worked at a law firm first because you will have more leverage and they know you are making a lot so they will likely give you a higher offer. Versus someone like me who went in house right away they know you're more "desperate" and willing to take a lower salary.

it really depends on what kind of job you get. it's hard to go in house right away so if you have to start off like I did doing a legal assistant position it could be $60k?

they can but it's pretty rare. I am not sure about Shell but I assume larger companies like Shell would have in house counsel and if they deal with immigration issues they would hire in house counsel. However, I feel like most companies use outside counsel for immigration so you would have to work at a law firm.
@mila_read

@@BrittanyTran I agree - immigration can be part of an employment lawyer's responsibilities but it's extremely rare that a business would have to have a dedicated immigration attorney.

What type of work you do in house, is it like reviewing contact & agreement, just wondering is it a complicated job for fresh graduate with no experience?
@BrittanyTran

yes reviewing contracts mostly and then dealing with employee issues or other things that the company needs help with. I'll have a video all about it! it's not that complicated but it could be difficult for a fresh grad because you have no experience.

Is it possible to be a civil litigator for a big law firm and switch to in house? Or how likely is that?
@BrittanyTran
@BrittanyTran 3 года назад
yes it is - it might be a bit harder if the skills and knowledge are not as transferrable to an in house role but it also depends on what in house role you are applying for. there might be litigation focused roles in house.

not unless the company is being sued for something and they want to watch outside counsel or if they will handle the case in house. or if they are in house counsel that deals with litigation then they might, but usually you hire outside counsel to do that.

Hi Rubel, It does happen - less so into marketing perhaps, but lots of examples of lawyers going into commercial roles within large multinationals (e.g. sales, country CEO, commercial director). Accenture's CEO is a lawyer (their former General Counsel). Often it's lawyers who support sales that choose transition into sales related commercial roles as they already take active part in negotiations and drafting contracts with company clients.
