i’m a transgender man (FtM) and in the process of getting a hysterectomy this year. periods and risk of pregnancy will be gone, alleviating that source of anxiety and dysphoria. thanks for the short yet informative video. great research for those looking into if this is right for them i’ll be keeping my ovaries as suggested by doctors and other transgender folks because they will continue to produce the estrogen my body will need. everyone needs estrogen and testosterone; the appropriate balance between hormones is different for everyone. nature should be taken into consideration, not ignored. without my ovaries, my body likely wouldn’t produce an appropriate amount of estrogen for itself. i’d probably need to take estrogen supplements alongside my testosterone injections for years. plus, i’ll get to keep my eggs if i do decide to do something with them!

Hey I'm a bit curious about your experience, but if I ask anything intrusive or uncomfortable you don't have to answer. I'm also trans (FTN). I do not want to be pregnant ever, and my period is unpleasant and dysphoric for me. I don't want to take testosterone though (I've heard that it stops menstruation but I don't really want a beard or a voice drop). Can I actually get a hysterectomy for these reasons? My mom says that no one would do it on me and that it would cause problems. I just really don't want to bleed anymore but I don't know if I'd be allowed to get a hysterectomy. If it's cool, I'd like to hear about your experience with your doctor and how it's been for you. Thanks in advance by the way, even if you don't end up answering, the comment you left gives me a bit of hope for the future.

@floofmoth hey, no worries! i actually really love answering these kinds of questions! :] the #1 option to stop periods permanently is to have a hysterectomy. there are other surgical options but they're usually only performed to treat disease or disorders. some birth control methods could work, but the effects of any given type vary from person to person. what stopped my periods was when i started estrogen blockers before going on testosterone. it was a once-a-month injection into the muscle of my butt. i was able to administer the shots at home because my mother's a nurse. the same medication, lupron, is also used to treat cancer and other diseases. it has other effects that you'll have to talk to your doctor about. i know that what i say may or may not be helpful, but i encourage you to keep researching and i really hope you find what's right for you!

@@roboninjas I super appreciate this, I currently take birth control but I'm supposed to stop taking it every three months to have a period. I honestly think a hysterectomy is the best option for me so I'll keep my hopes up for that. I just hear stories about doctors wanting to do them on people because "they're young and could still have kids" and I worry I'll encounter that. Though if you were able to get one as a trans person I guess that bodes well for me. Thank you so much for the reply, I feel a little bit more hopeful!

@@floofmoth I feel compelled to share a little bit of my hysterectomy experience. I absolutely LOVE having no periods; my cramping and discomfort . . . GONE. The only time I cramp now is when I have to poo. Even my anxiety/depression has all but ceased to exist. I never gave having kids much thought, but I could choose to have them eventually if I met the right person. . .but that choice was taken from me by a cancer diagnosis (endometrial adenocarcinoma). It's a devastating feeling to be robbed of something like that. I know that not everyone will feel that way and your hysterectomy will be voluntary, but I am also experiencing some side effects that you mentioned you didn't want. I will be 6 months post op May 15th and I have noticed a significant voice drop, especially in my singing range. I also have noticed some under chin hair that I want to get lasered off eventually. I just wanted you to be aware that those things can happen and to really REALLY do the research on potential long lasting side effects. Incontinence is a potential side effect also; thank God I didn't have that. I wish you the best of luck and hope this info helps you in some way.

@@Obsidiana_99 Thank you so so much for sharing, that information really helps. While personally I think being pregnant would be a horrible experience for me, i can't imagine how hard it must be to lose that if it was something you were considering. On a positive note, I turned 18 this year and was able to get a referral to an OBGYN where I can discuss what the best decision for me is and figure out what the process is. Having this info really helps me know things to ask about and I really appreciate you sharing your experience.

I heard once you have a hysterectomy, even if they keep your ovaries, you tend to go into menopause because the ovaries die. Some of the blood flow to them is affected.
