Should I Pluck My Dog's Ear Hair?

Ear Plucking | Should you Pluck Dogs Ears?
Ear plucking is a controversial subject among Groomers and Veterinarians.
I treat each Dog on a individual basis. I pluck most curly coated breeds has the hair curls up and grows back into the ear with the exception of senior dogs. Most senior dogs cannot tolerate ear plucking.
Plucking ears may cause a small micro-inflammation in the hair follicles. This small micro-inflammation then weakens the immune system of the ear canal, and that leads to ear infection by organisms already present in the ear however plucking hair from the ears can allow a deep, thorough cleaning of any built-up wax or debris, and allows the canal to breathe, thus keep the canal drier on certain dogs such as the Schnauzer in this video. It’s the warm, dark, moist environment of the hairy ear canal that may contribute to ear infections.
Bottom line? Ear plucking may work very well for certain dogs. If it does, and does not cause the dog much discomfort, then perhaps you have no reason to seek alternative ear maintenance methods. But if the dog undergoes regular ear pluckings and still suffers from chronic ear problems, then it could be time to explore other options. Don’t hesitate to discuss ear plucking and its alternatives with your a vet and your groomer.

Thank you for being a thoughtful groomer. My mini schnauzer got hurt at groomers and hates having her ears plucked. That is why I groom her myself now. And I go gentle and slow.

When I was a groomer I would always remind the owners to make sure, if they bath their dog to (make sure) they dry the hair in and around the ear. When I plucked their hair I would start plucking 1 or 2 hairs at a time. It takes longer but the dogs seem to enjoy it more. I love your blogs! Thank you so much!

I had a poodle for 13 yrs. Later a mixed breed pup from the pound, as we called it years ago, for 17 years. Both dearly loved and still missed. Both I had groomed and groomer plucked their ears. The groomer for my poodle Suzie, was intense. Often she came home bleeding on her face or body. Both dogs had their ears plucked both went deaf, had swollen infected ears in their latter years. Always medicated but the damage was done. 10 years passed and I got a toy Schnoodle, Babi. She lived 12 1/2 years, a darling. Now another Schnoodle, Daisi 1 year now. Both of these pups I don't allow plucking. Both of these pups had & have no ear problems. Babi's hearing was perfect and not one infection. The groomer will sometimes just cut the ear fur shorter. As a dog Mom, I recommended to others, no plucking. Just a note to folks don't be afraid to try different groomers. If you're uncomfortable, so is your pup. There are both caring & stylish ones out there. Not all dogs need shaving everytime. If matted yes. Thankyou for your video. Much appreciated. 😊

Thanks for a great video that's not trying to sell some magic powder and covers the difficult decision of ear plucking. The vet told me to pluck my new puppies ears but it didn't seem to feel right to me. Now I have the information I need to make my own decision that's best for the dog. When the vet is also a partner in the attached groomers business its hard to trust them.

I'm a groomer and I firmly believe that an ear canal cannot properly be cleaned or clean itself with a ton of ear in it. Ear plucking can be painful but not nearly as painful as an ear infection can get! Also most dogs won't be 100% cooperative so I don't agree that you should stop if the dog doesn't like it. Just like with nail trimming and filing especially when they have sensitive feet and joints. You wouldn't or at least I hope you wouldn't choose not to trim the nails because the dog doesn't like it. The pros outweigh the cons. If ears are plucked the proper way, it shouldn't cause an ear infection. I have met way too many dogs with badly infected ears from lack of plucking and ear care. It helps the ears properly clean themselves out and breathe. Especially if they have food allergies or other issues. Also, breeds like schnauzers are supposed to have very closely clipped ears. Having tufts of hair stick out just looks ridiculous when the ears are cropped. Basically the only sure way a dog will let you do their ears and such is if they have been having it done from a very early age. It always tickles and feels weird to a dog that is not used to it. Which is natural because who is okay with having their ears messed with? Proper ear cleaning should be included with any grooming service especially since its not cheap!
@happyjud

Sorry but I disagree about ear plucking. That's exactly why my dogs went deaf and had terribly infected ears. Also, ear cropping and tail docking is outdated. People are not doing that anymore, at least few are.

I have a Portuguese Water Dog and he will scratch his ears like crazy if his ears are not plucked. He gets long, curly matted plugs of hair deep in his ear canal - he is very good at sitting through a plucking at home except at times it is painful so I don’t do it often but not waiting too long where it gets completely blocked in his canal. He will get ear infections if it’s not kept up with.

My dog got a really bad ear infection because my groomer decided she wasn't going to pluck her ears anymore... So I went and bought all the grooming stuff and I groom her myself... I would also like to add that it cost me almost $400.00 dollars to get rid of that ear infection...and let me tell you that is a lot more painful than plucking a bite of hair out each time she's groomed... My dog doesn't react badly at all...and paws is another issue I has with the groomer... Not to mention you pay to have your dog groomed properly and it can be done very easily if your any kind of a pro... You also have to watch for mites and ticks... Leaving that much hair is asking for trouble and could be even worse than my dogs infection.... Not worth the risk!!

Use sulfodene to prevent ear infections. You don't need to pluck the hair out of the dog's ears it hurts. Just cut it short. You'll never have a vet bill. After the dog is groomed put a drop of sulfodene on your finger and wipe it in the ear canal that's all you need to do once a month.

Yes. I have a ShihTzu. Before my vet started pulling hair out of his ears, I started recognizing he(Sammy) has allergies. So, now he is prone to infections because his ears get itchy ans he starts rubbing his ear on anything to make it feel better. So, from what I discovered is, clean out 5he hair on outside and keep inside clean. He stays on Zyrtek allergy meds.

There is a powder to use to do this. It will clean the outside and the hair easily pulls out without hurting the dog. My vet uses it. He showed me how to do it. I would never do it without using this powder. Ears can get infected with dirt wax et cetra.

Thank you , this is such an informative video. I have my first minature poodle and the ear hair is starting to get bad at 13 weeks old. Not smelling too bad but I know trouble is brewing and she's got another week and a half until she goes to the groomer. I'm going to try the combing the ear hair out straight before going to plucking

My dogs are maltipoos; they are half siblings with different fathers, and six months apart, and are both 7 years old. They have never had any ear infections or any issues. The girl seems to take after her maltese mother and has straighter hair and not much hair in her ears. The boy is more like his poodle father and has tons of thick curly hair in and around his ears. The groomer will pluck his ears but I will reach in with clean hands and pull out the hair. He seems to enjoy it and just lays there. I will pull out these fuzzy hairs from the inside of his ear. This is okay right? He has never had problems and it keeps the hair from bunching up in his ears. His sister also cleans his ears for him as well as cleaning his whole face. She won't let her brother groom her so she licks her paws and wipes her face just like a cat! It's quite adorable!

Hey I’ve got an Australian Labradoodle with a fleece coat and I’m not sure if I should pluck his ear hair. He loves to dig and gets a bit of dirt in his ears so they get a bit dirty sometimes. They also seem to get greasy (im not sure if it’s wax). What should I do?

What are the advantages of plucking versus shaving/scissoring? I have a senior American Cocker Spaniel that I mostly groom myself. I use clippers for the long hairs and scissor the interior.
@LoveofGrooming
@LoveofGrooming 6 лет назад
Shaving is less painful than plucking if the hair is in too tight. I never pluck senior dogs ears as they are too sensitive and it can cause them to have a seizure. I find that Cockers do not have many hairs in the ear opening and most of the hair is around the ear opening so shaving is best. Plucking can cause follicle damage or ear infection or red skin which will make the dog shake it's head or scratch it's ears which is why shaving is better and more humane

My mini schnauzer has ears like your mini you have in the video. TOO much hair!! I try to pluck some out, but shave mostly. She scratches ears and edge of mouth daily. Can't figure out the cause :( . No infections. Tally is 12 and never liked grooming. I had another schnauzer 4 years older and she never had issues (or too much ear hair and no barking!)

I shave my dog ears hair. He is schnauzer mix. He had ear mite and the vet told me to pluck, but I shave them. He love being shave there, he will lay down as long as it takes to clean the entire ear. He know that it feels good after the shaving. And I am also sensitive enough to know what he like and dislike. Grooming him is very easy..

Allowing the hair to curl up into a ball in the ear demonstrates neglect. The best solution for those people is to use sulfodene periodically to eliminate infections. The hair acts as a wick allowing the excess ear wax two oose out of the ear. It is best to cut it short.

Hi, it would depend on how much hair is in the canal and if the hair is preventing the medication from going inside the ear. Also if the ear is very sore, it's painful to pluck when infected. If the medication is getting into the canal then I would not pluck. Plucking may possibly irritate the ear more.

key words "New Groomer" You will see as you groom for a while. Each dog is an individual with different ear hair. Be careful not too pluck too much or aggressively to cause an infection. Happy Grooming

It's technique not to do with the age of the dog. Grooming powder should be used to enable a better grip of the hair and it's small twist and pull movement.

Great Video ,so sad that people let their dogs Ear Hygiene get so bad, the dogs with the full ears that are red and sore must hurt so much. I have 3 longhaired Lhasa Apso's which I keep their coats long, I have kept their ears and Eyes clean and tidy from them being pups , Any hair growing in and around the Eat Canal I cut away and clean the ear with recommended ear oil for dogs , I also wash and dry around their eyes every day with water and a drop of baby shampoo or recommended dogs face shampoo / face Spa for dogs to cut down tear stain I keep the fur very short around the eyes and make sure their beautiful 4cm eye lashes don't curl inwards and prick their eyes .,

I also used to own Groom and breed Old English Sheepdogs , A lady asked me to groom and clip the coat of her Old English as she had no longer the funds for a professional groomer which was expensive in The Netherlands at that time , Over the course of 4 weeks we removed 3 Large dustbin bags full of stinking ear hair from that poor dogs inner ear's ,so that he was eventually able to be treated for months and months of painful Ear infection ,head shaking and head scratching .

If the ear hair comes out easily and causes no pain then it can be plucked. Sometimes plucking causes infection. If the hair is tight inside the ear and causes pain then in my own opinion do not pluck as plucking hair that is tightly rooted while cause damage to the hair follicles which may lead to an ear infection and cause unnecessary pain to the dog. It's an individual case to pluck or not.

Not necessarily as mentioned in my video. Some dogs ears do not need to be plucked. It's a case by case basis, each dog is an individual and the ears need to be accessed. Some dogs ear hair is so tight that it's torture to pluck and causes follicle damage. Some dogs get infections from plucking while others get infections from not plucking. I have been to many seminars about the canine ear and spoke with my personal vet about ear plucking. Maybe where she lives ear plucking as not been studied enough. Go on some Grooming Facebook page and ask and you will see explanations. I mentioned in my video of pros and cons.
