How about some hard foam plugs that fit in each hole with big red flags attached to them that read, "Remove before flight", seems to work pretty good on aircraft...

Send me a video of installing and removing them.. haha... good idea, but you can't get to the holes

Great insight. I have no reason to do any sort of protection on the intake poets. I'll change my af once my bike starts running like crap.

can you please explain how a completely filthy air filter and/or mouse nest doesn't strangle the engine but a wire grate over the intake does? You make your point about "it's terrible" but it doesn't logically make sense to my caveman brain.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 месяца назад
Yes, there is a difference, that you might not be aware of. First of all, there just has never really been an air filter in a Goldwing that was "filthy" to the point it was restricting the airflow through it. Only dirtbikes ridden in extremely dusty or desert conditions for extreme periods of time get enough dirt on them to cause a restriction that would affect performance. You need to see the air filters in construction machinery.... they get filthy... watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VejLFqWCNZw.htmlsi=o4955VKz_9a1xtNa The dirt you see on that machine filter could have accumulated to that extent in ONE DAY. No one is sticking $200 air filters in a machine every day. You just blow them out and keep on working. You could drive a Goldwing 200,000 miles and it would never, ever, look like that filter. A mouse nest, depending on it's size and scope could be a restriction. But again, not in the way you think. The material is wide fluffy and open. The screens on intake snorkels are a restriction that creates turbulence. This is the difference. Turbulent air has pockets of vacuum/void in it. So it's thousands of tiny pockets of nothing being created and delivered to the intake. If I had the time and engergy, I would set up a dyno test of all of these situations... but nobody would be willing to share the cost and I would just spend a lot of time and money with no return other than people continuing to speculate about what I did wrong or right. It's no-win situation. If I had a mouse nest in my bike, I would get it out. But I would never be concerned about the air filter. But you would also never find screens over my intakes either.

@@Traxxion Thanks for the explanation. I'd also love to see a dyno test comparing the same bike with and without a hardware cloth screen over the intake. It'd be interesting to see the difference.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 месяца назад
@@jeffshootsstuff If I ever did it, I would do all of that kind of stuff. I would just pour dirt on the filter and run it.

If the bike can compensate for a clogged filter, why won’t it compensate for screening over the intake ports?
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 месяца назад
Turbulence is the basic reason. Turbulent air is not "Solid" it has tiny pockets of void/vacuum. Grids at the mouth of the intake make the air in the tubes turbulent. "dirty" is a better word for the filter. I have never seen a clogged filter in my life. I work with some heavy machinery. Especially skid steers and track loaders the move quickly and stir up lots of dust while clearing land. The air filter in them get so dirty they almost fill up the air box... Not with fluff like a mouse nest... real fine dirt packed onto the air filter. You actually have to get the air filter completely covered and packed solid with dirt before you notice a drop in performance. There has never been a Goldwing that experienced that. Watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VejLFqWCNZw.htmlsi=oocrcgFdZzBEQDat

You said when showing the picture of mice in Goldwing that injection system would compensate for that mice. So why would it not compensation for a wire cover. I agree screen door is too tight but i put on screen with 1/4 gaps. Would the injection system compensate for that
@craignixon2180
@craignixon2180 4 месяца назад
I think the problem would be turbulence. Every one of those wires is a vortex generator.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 месяца назад
This response is correct. The snorkels condense and compact air, the grates disrupt and disturb it.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 месяца назад
Disrupted air is less... and fuel injection will compensate for that. But I think the effect is worse with grates than dust.

Would you be open to engineering a vacuum attached to the scope? Would it be as effective as changing the filter?

Your theory is good, but I beg to differ; when you look at the two snorkels and all the air interruptions built around them, such as wire looms panels, etc, then the airflow arriving at the snorkels is already rough and not smooth. So I cannot believe that a gauze filter is going to make that much difference. The modern airboxes are mainly designed for noise reduction and not ultimate performance. I think the only ultimate evidence would be Dyno before and after test, but I cannot imagine anyone going through all the work. My setup is a gauze on the snorkels and K&N filter and it seems to run really well.
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 4 месяца назад
While there is turbulence around the entrance of the snorkels due the objects you mention, the job of the snorkels is to organize and smooth the air going down the snorkel. There is no wire looms inside the snorkel! I would definitely not use a gauze material, unless you know specifically the environment is was created for... impervious to gas fumes, can handle 150+ degrees F without degradation, etc. I suppose the worst that could happen is it gets sucked into airbox. You need to solve your mouse problem, without modifying your motorcycle!
@johnnym6062
@johnnym6062 4 месяца назад
I'm a bit confused. The air coming into the box needs to go through the filter and THEN into the throttle body. The air filter "restricts" the air to some degree. Wouldn't the filter eliminate the "turbulance"? And if the screens reduce the amount of air passing through the filter, wouldn't the computer compensate?

Make the Screens out of the Mesh off the back of your old Air Filter have them on my 2018 and MADE NO difference at all the the Gas Mileage or power !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree don't cover the snorkels. If the mice are that bad, get a dam cat. I am out in the sticks, yes we have lots of critters, but not in my bike.I can't stand a cat but like our President, they do serve a purpose.

I took a length of cotton rope and sprayed it with a spice spray thats designed to keep rodents away naturally so its full of nutmeg and other such smells spicy smells. Then I encircled the bike with it. They won't cross that rope cause i put talc on the floor and they were everywhere else. Garage smells like a turkish brothal but no mice inside the roped bit..

Does anyone suppose there would any value to dropping a couple of moth balls onto the top of the air filter when you get in there to change it? They worked well to keep rodents out from under the seat of a bike I had stored ...

I don't think they are legal any more. Very toxic to humans. I would say you might put them on the floor where the bike touches... front wheel and centerstand...

First off, I'd like to thank those poor moths for their sacrifice... AFAIK, moth balls are legal in Indiana - YMMV. I use moth balls as part of my winter put-away process, and have had good luck with them. During riding season, I rely on glue traps around the inside perimeter of the garage, and usually nab at least one a week.

My 2018 got 1/8" mesh today. And it's staying. The oem filter has even a finer mesh on the back side of the pleats. While the inlet side of the air box does swirl air. It's clear the box acoustics are tuned for low noise and greenie weenie crap. Both tubes seem to be the close to the same length and radius. Or darn close. With one tube mostly external and the rear one internal. I suggest Honda pull their head out of there ass and change the whole POS intake system. Worse damn air filter change in history of the internal combustion engine. All that bullshit for one little tiny greenie weenie sucking under powered 1833 cc throttle body. I looked down in that air filter box. I won't be buying another Goldwing.
