Video Summary:
"Should I Wear A Weightlifting Belt?" (Pros And Cons)
www.SeanNal.com/articles/train...
Should you wear a lifting belt during your workouts? Is a weightlifting belt necessary?
This is a very common issue that gets brought up on my videos or in the emails that people send to me.
The central purpose of a weightlifting belt is to increase intra-abdominal pressure as a means of improving core stability, which provides additional lower back support and allows you to lift more total weight.
Although there's no black and white answer here, my overall view is that most lifters do not need to use a weightlifting belt the majority of the time.
A lifting belt should only be looked at as one extra tool that certain trainees can make use of in select situations.
In the following situations I definitely wouldn't recommend the use of a lifting belt:
- You're still in the beginning stages of your training career.
- You're training primarily to improve athletic performance.
- You're working with light/moderate loads in higher rep ranges.
In all of these cases, I'd suggest relying solely on your body's own "internal lifting belt" instead, which are the muscles of your core.
To do this, you'll want to make sure to "brace your core" before each rep of your major compound lifts (like the squat, deadlift and overhead press) by drawing a big breath into your belly, locking the air in tightly, and then pushing your stomach outward as you perform the movement. Exhale after each rep and repeat.
When CAN a weightlifting belt be used as part of your workouts?
There are a few situations where it can make sense...
When to use a lifting belt:
- You're an advanced lifter well past the beginning stages.
- You've progressed without a belt to lifting very heavy weights relative to your body weight.
- You've mastered the perfect form on all of your exercises.
- You're using 85% or more of your one rep max on a big compound lift.
If all of the above is true, then a lifting belt can be used to assist you on those all out heavy sets to maximize performance and reduce injury risk.
Aside from that, the only other situation a weightlifting belt can be used is for those with pre-existing lower back injuries if you do find that it helps reduce the pain.
So, is a lifting belt necessary? It's never mandatory, but can be used in certain scenarios here and there when appropriate.

I don't disagree with the video, but if you ever saw me at a commercial gym, and I was wearing a belt, I'd be wearing it the whole time I'm there... No, it wouldn't be cinched up the whole time, only for specific exercises. I wear it kinda loose for storage purposes, otherwise it becomes something else to have to carry around & look after. Believe it or not, stuff will grow legs in a gym, I've had it happen... Of course when I'm at my home gym & I'm not using it, I just hang it up on a door rack. So, just cause one may see a guy wearing a belt the whole time he's at a gym, it doesn't mean he's actually using it for its intended purpose... Just FYI...

+Cadinho I personally am okay with the use of wrist straps as I find that they do improve back training quite a bit, and there's no injury risk to using them. You can incorporate grip work separately if you want to.

Oh gosh... I've been keeping my belt on most of the time... Ten years ago I had a compressed disc and I really like the belt because I feel safe with it. I had a double hernia at the age of three, and I'm super paranoid to get another one because I'm 32 and I still see the scar on my stomach. Gosh am I a gym douche bag? If it is leg day I pretty much keep my belt on the whole time. Shoulder day also... =\ oh gosh okay also for bench press :/

A doubt I always have is the defintion of "noob"/ begginer, "not high weights"... What is considered a high or not high weight to use belt? For a say 88kg person, what would be a deadlift/ squat weight that would be considered already on the high side and worth a belt?

@jannomeeuwessen4886
@jannomeeuwessen4886 Год назад
I only use it when deadlifting (once per 1 or 2 weeks), because I can lift more than 1,5x my body weight, and have lower back discomfort after lifting that heavy (even though my back back is straight)

What's the difference between gaining strength and muscle mass? Like can you build strength and muscle mass in a slight deficit? Or do you HAVE to be in a surplus? Bc they say you can't build muscle without a surplus but can't loose fat without a deficit? Doing both has to be possible
@Sean_Nalewanyj
@Sean_Nalewanyj 8 лет назад
+Anthony D If you're a newbie you can gain muscle in a deficit. More experienced lifters generally won't though.

@Sean_Nalewanyj
@Sean_Nalewanyj 8 лет назад
+Ayub Alom I personally am okay with the use of wrist straps as I find that they do improve back training quite a bit, and there's no injury risk to using them, plus the forearms are smaller muscle groups. You can incorporate grip work separately if you want to.

Totally agreed. My rule is, if you are not a powerlifter or some other competitive strength athlete, you should not be wearing one. I see guys who are like 150lb wearing belts squatting 200lb. Belts are for people trying to put up high numbers like weightlifter and powerlifters. They are not for bodybuilders.

Great vid dude but it begs the question....do you wear a weightlifting belt? Also I've noticed in a few of your vids people saying that you have a relatively small subscriber base and I just wanted to comment on it. 70K is an extremely respectable amount which is growing at a healthy rate! You'd rather have a gradual increase of mature and sincere subscribers than one video going viral and get a bunch of 'dead' subscribers who'll stop watching your videos after a while. Keep up the good work and please don't stop posting these informative videos! There's enough buffoonery on youtube! XD
@Sean_Nalewanyj
@Sean_Nalewanyj 8 лет назад
+Abul Hasnath I've never personally worn a belt even when I was deadlifting 400-500, but at this point in my training I'm not in there trying to max out on anything so it wouldn't even make sense for me. Also, thanks for pointing that out. Getting 70k subs on RU-vid is not an easy task, and my weekly rate of growth is now actually exceeding some of the more popular channels that have 150-200k subs.

How about using a weightlifting belt to reduce core activation during heavy lifts to prevent growth of core muscles when the goal is more about V-taper aesthetics than athletics?
