Death Row Kids (2005): From 2005-2010, more juvenile offenders were killed in Texas than in the rest of the world combined. America continues to defend its right to execute children.

I don't care what age you are, if you commit an adult crime, you need to be ready to pay an adult price. Being sorry AFTER you take someone's life is worth the words. You KNEW what might happen, and you took your chances, and lost....too bad...

When I was about 6 years old, my niece asked me to go to the candy/toy store. What I didnt know, she wanted to steal chewing gum. After she left the store and we were standing outside, she told me she had stolen chewing gum and how she wanted to share the gum with me. I refused to have a taste of her chewing gum, as else I would feel like we had stolen it together. She tried to trick me into becoming shop lifter.... It can go like that, especially with young people.

I'm 43 now and I'm not the same person I was at 17/18. I don't think the same way, my behaviour is different. If I could go back I'd do many things differently....I guess you mature as you get older. Now would I have killed someone at aged 18...never!! But I didnt have the same upbringing as these two men. I didnt have the same environment, friends or maybe violent families. I think these two men have really changed there lives, I think their lives should be used to inspire the youth. We sit with the same problem today, even worse. Kids are still killing on the streets. Point is: if you keep doing what you've always done, expect the same result. Is there not a better way with dealing with kids in situasions like these or do we just simply not care enough to bring about great change in the world?
@resourcedragon

The people reading this probably didn't kill anyone back when they were 16 or 17 or 18 but most of us did things when we were on the cusp of adulthood that we wouldn't do as mature adults. (According to the experts, the brain isn't fully mature until about 25.) So, sure, they "know right from wrong" from a young age, but they don't realise that they are going down a path that will lead them into doing something really wrong until it's too late.

I just searched Oswaldo Soriano on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and found out that he is not longer on death row... He is now serving a life sentence and is eligible for parole in 2027. As I was watching the video I was praying for him and for the victim's family too. And I know that just like me many people were praying for all of them too. I have mixed feelings on the death penalty. Not for children tho! I feel each and every case is different. (Nobody should ever take a life) I feel tho, there are circumstances where people do deserve another chance tho. I just feel every single case should be looked at. There are cold blooded serial killers and YES give them the death penalty. Child killers, if you kill a child, if someone rapes a child, tortures, ect. ( and only if it is a case that is proven 101%) the death penalty should be enforced.

I know Oswaldo Soriano. He is now on the French Robertson Unit (TDCJ) in Abilene, Texas. Here is a man that does feel remorse, tormented by the death he caused. Sure, it can be argued that Oswaldo did then and there shoot the man. The clerk did try to grab the gun and Oswaldo did squeeze the trigger--twice, actually. It was a spontaneous reaction of uncontrolled nervousness. It doesn't mean that Oswaldo is not guilty. But it does mitigate the offense somewhat. Hindsight is 20/20. If Oswaldo could talk to that lost soul he once was--the drug addict, roaming the streets, the child with no guidance and no father figure, he would advise him of the cause and effects, that taking the gun and pointing it at the clerk, would have. At 17, Oswaldo's life was destroyed for committing an offense and causing the death of an innocent man.

Yeah ok if he was remorseful he would tell the truth. Do you think people really believe that nonsense that his friend gave him the gun and he said what am I supposed to do with this ? Oswaldo is full of shit my friend . I'm surprised they allowed him to get life in prison instead of death.

You can be butt-hurt all you want everyone has their own beliefs, it doesn’t make it right or wrong, he’s only giving his opinion/beliefs on the matter, just like you. BTW the 17 Y/O convicted for killing the store clerk, he believes he shouldn’t be executed because it was accident. It wasn’t an accident he was a willing participant in a robbery, it wasn’t a accident he held the gun. At any point he could’ve said “NO” and walked away. Wouldn’t it be interesting if we knew the opinions of the direct, deceased victims? I just think it’d be a great study if we could base punishment on the decision of the direct victim, indirect victims (loved ones left behind on either side), and circumstances. Obviously this isn’t possible for the most part, but what if we all had to regularly vote on what consequences we’d like to happen for various crimes against ourselves (a default would be set if not done). Plus it might be a jolt of reality to contemplate your own mortality and the consequences of your actions if you chose to commit these crimes.Of course a person’s personal choice wouldn’t be publicly known unless they said it, for obvious reasons. Even with this though: when would someone be considered mature/stable enough to vote or make this decision for themself? If we cap fighting in a war or voting for the local mayor at 18, then how can we argue 17 + 16yr olds fully understand the law and deserve the full extent of it? If they fully understand the laws then why can’t they vote on them or have any direct say/effect on them by voting for those law makers, politicians, or even the sheriff? Just interested in people’s thoughts. I’ve been cooped up in this bed a lot longer than this recent pandemic, and could use the potential reading.

Some of which are either have a mental problems, or were under the age to really have any understanding of what they have done, or the hurt they cause to the families they have affected. I totally agree with you...they are children and some could be rehabilitated over time...America spends 85billion dollars a year on prisons so the threat of a death sentence obviously doesn't work...more money should be spent on the youths before they get to this stage...education is key to the youngsters and the money should be spent on mentoring these kids when they are in school or at youth clubs..if they do end up in prison educate them teach them a trade so when they are released they can earn a decent wage and maybe stay on the straight and narrow....here in England we abolished the death penalty in the 60s crime is bad especially with the youngsters but again they need to be educated while they are in prison instead of releasing them back on the streets with no formal education and so they go straight back to crime...something really needs to be done to help these kids...

I am 100% against the death penalty. The victims families and loved ones are going to suffer for years and years, but the murderer is going to suffer for only minutes. It is also proven to be no deterrent whatsoever to other potential murderers. My belief is for a daily torture routine, you know, toes being crushed, cigarette lighters being held against various parts of the bodies, sparklers being inserted in the eye of the penis and then lit, that type of thing. I think televising it would send a message and make it much more of a deterrent. I am sure this would satisfy all those out there who are against the death penalty who do not believe in taking a life away. Those who do believe in the death penalty would be happy there was some degree of vengeance muted out, and that the culprit was suffering just as much as the victims families. This would be a win win solution, and satisfy everyone.

Plus, People executed today were convicted in a time when different lower standards were used to put people to death, also remember, the Jury is who decides what happens, so a biased jury is a garanteed death sentence. All of this has to be challenged. The point of appeals is to try to catch the innocent or improperly convicted, and save them from dying. Do those guilty of the most awful murders abuse it to stay alive for as long as possible? Sure. But there have been MANY exonerations and resentencing as a result of appeals. That to me was the most horrific case I'd ever heard of. Then the Chris Watts murders where he murdered his pregnant wife and two small children. For me child killers are the worst. Someone who would take anyone's life is horrible but to kill an innocent baby or child that changed me and the way I viewed death row. Now as far as child offenders for me I'd have to weigh the circumstances heavily before making a desicion because they are kids themselves but I do know in my heart I could not put them back out into society. I was on both sides of law in my youth , I know peer pressure was strong in my case and I followed along to the grace of god there go I , I always think that way , but the age of reason isn’t age it’s knowledge and wisdom. Scientists can create theories but living it is experiencing the reason.

let's assume that osvaldo really didnt intentionally kill the guy in the shop, but just panicked and killed him. why cant he be redeemable? if he credibly shows that he changed in prison, why not give him a 2nd chace? and dont tell me "the victim didnt get one either". actually, many didnt even have a 1st chance, considering how they grew up. also, why doesnt anybody ask, why there is so much more violent crime in america, compared to all other western countries? here in munich, germany, we have maybe 1 murder a month, in philadelphia, same size, 1 a day.

I was surprised to find out kids could receive the death penalty. They definitily deserve jail, but the death penalty seems way to harsh.

Oswaldo is lying!!! That clerk was an elderly man and he was shot TWICE. This was no accident. The fact he continues to lie proves he still has no remorse or accountability.

That's pretty much always because they hire somebody to do it for them. And then all they have is a conspiracy to commit murder charge or solicitation charge which is rarely punished with the death penalty.

If someone is absolutely 100% guilty of murder they should be put to death within 30 days of being sentenced

Kenneth Moaratty So they get less ability to appeal their conviction and or sentence than somebody contesting a speeding ticket? You seriously think there are never any miscarriages of justice? It’s been estimated that approximately 1 in every 25 people convicted in the US is actually innocent of the crime they are charged with. Personally, I think it is better to spare 25 people from death than to execute 24 murderers and one innocent man. But hey, you Americans are a weird bunch. You’re not particularly anti crime but you’re really pro punishment. The rest of the civilised world moved on from the idea of retribution but you’re still stuck in the nineteenth century.

PT 0:25 / 25:56 "Should Kids Be Put On Death Row? " No one should! I can't believe this still happens in the 21st century. A medieval journey, at its worst. It's just ridiculous that people even invoke the bible to justify this atrocity. Humans can be a scary species. My country was pioneer in the process of abolition of capital punishment. No executions have been carried out since 1846. I'm so proud of that!

Lawrence Jacobs got a retrial and got sentenced to life. On October 6, 2020, the 24th Judicial District Court in Louisiana held a Miller re-sentencing hearing in State of Louisiana v. Lawrence Jacobs, to determine Mr. Jacobs’ eligibility for parole. Jacobs was 16 when he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Describing the expert testimony of CLBB Associate Managing Director Dr. Robert Kinscherff as “the most helpful evidence” in the case, the court found that Jacobs’ offense had the features of transient immaturity and that Jacobs had demonstrated a capacity for embracing a positive way of life. The Court ruled that Jacobs was immediately eligible for parole. See the court’s opinion in this case here:

The kid who shot the Clerk, is it on film that it happened like he said, that the Clerk lounged at Him and the Gun went off? Hes still guilty of murder but not "intent" to murder for he was being told what to do by another person? But if he got involved with the other guy, to commit a crime, and things went wrong, your still guilty, even of intent because you voluntarily agreed to do a crime, it dont matter if something happened unplanned, your still guilty of every crime committed during the crime you agreed to do? As far as using age as a defense, well some kids grow up in tough neighborhoods, and they know what is right and what is wrong? If you jump into a car to go to a fight and someone in the car shoots someone, you are guilty of murder also even though you didn't shot anyone?
