No one should carry out the hudud punishments without the permission of the ruler. If there is no ruler who rules according to sharee’ah then it is not permissible for the ordinary people to carry out the punishments. Whoever does that is sinning, because carrying out the hudud punishments requires examining the matter and requires shar’i knowledge in order to know the conditions of proof. The ordinary people have no knowledge of such things, and the carrying out of one of the punishments by the ordinary people leads to many evils and the loss of security, whereby people will attack one another and klllll one another or chop off one another’s hands on the grounds that they are carrying out punishments.

So, Muhammad bin Maslama promised him that he would come to him next time. They (Muhammad bin Maslama and his companions came to him as promised and murdered him. Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas: A blind man had a slave-mother who used to abuse the Prophet (ﷺ) and disparage him. He forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night she began to slander the Prophet (ﷺ) and abuse him. So he took a dagger, placed it on her belly, pressed it, and killed her. A child who came between her legs was smeared with the blood that was there. When the morning came, the Prophet (ﷺ) was informed about it. He assembled the people and said: I adjure by Allah the man who has done this action and I adjure him by my right to him that he should stand up. Jumping over the necks of the people and trembling the man stood up. He sat before the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah! I am her master; she used to abuse you and disparage you. I forbade her, but she did not stop, and I rebuked her, but she did not abandon her habit. I have two sons like pearls from her, and she was my companion. Last night she began to abuse and disparage you. So I took a dagger, put it on her belly and pressed it till I killed her. Thereupon the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Oh be witness, no retaliation is payable for her blood.

So let’s clarify what both of these inhumane people just said: When asked if Rushdie should do die for insulting the prophet with his fictional book, one of them essentially said “I support following the rule of law in whatever country you’re in” … which is a slick way of saying “perhaps he should be killed for writing a book, but unfortunately we have to follow our governments’ criminal justice laws and not Sharia law.” Wow. Then they both laughed after Hijab said “they’re gonna get burned up in the hellfire anyway” when referring to someone speaking badly about Islam and insulting their prophet. Two Muslims living under the freedoms given to them by western enlightenment values, speaking about doing barbaric things in the name of their religion. Is this the modern state of Islam that Muslims are proud of?!

Satanic Verses is one of the worst books with regard to Islam, but due to the Muslims, who were ignorant about everything about it, and just rode on emotions irked up by politicians, started condemning Rushdie, and the effect of it was clear. His book, which didn't even deserve to be published because of the childish arguments and references it used, started gaining audience and became a bestseller. As an Indian, I was told by my parents and relatives, that there were rallies against Rushdie, but majority of the protestors didn't knew what they were protesting against, but it was mostly just some politician using Rushdie's book to do appeasement politics. Just like Fahad Bhai mentions, this is how you respond to insult. Burning the Quran is such a big thing, but the kind of response that they showed was needed, and today, Allah made that Quran burner as a way for his message to reach places where it never went.

I always found it peculiar how Muslims rely on religious leaders or even governments for interpretation of the Quran and Sunnah. Therefore those religious leaders have the true power over the people and this explains why there is many different understandings of Islam, why Islam changes throughout history, why Islam has been localized with various cultures and languages. The men in power change or adapt Islam to their interpretation to best suit their needs. Islam isn't really different from any other religion in this manner, if it were 2 billion Muslims would follow the same deen. Think about it if the entire world were Muslim there would still be wars and if the Muslims on Muslims violence in the middle east is any indications there would actually be more wars.

If I go out on the street calling everyone who appears in front of me a son of a bit@#&, what would happen to me? 1. a person would reply to me saying son of a bit@#& it's you! 2. another person would not care 3. someone else would ask if I'm crazy. 4. someone else would punch me and we would get into a fight until the police arrive and brake up the fight and blame the person who attacked me, because every human being has freedom of expression and I was just expressing myself. Again I would go around insulting everyone who appeares in front of me: 5. another person would shake his head and walk away. After 1000 times, 2000 times 10000 times and the police always defending me whenever I got involved in a fight giving me the reason because I was free to express myself.
