We often hear people lament the loss of Dine' culture and language, but inside Ned Hatathli Museum in Dine' College, as curator Nonabah Sam says, everything is here for us. There is a strong sense of being part of a continuing story of a people who have endured through time, rather than the last gasp of the victims of colonization. Nonabah doesn't just envision how to best display the pieces in the museum, she speaks to the pieces, she prays--and these divine conversations permeate the space. And, importantly, the museum is moving back towards a more protective approach to certain pieces and stories in order to preserve their sacredness. This means that well-meaning (and not so well-meaning) non-Natives may experience pushback against their requests to view certain items or hear certain stories. Perhaps for the first time in history, non-Native visitors are being asked what their intention is before having their requests denied. It's part of the complicated process of reclaiming Dine' culture and history. Join us as we continue our tour with Nonabah Sam.
