Dan Patrick and the Danettes react to how well Shohei Ohtani is hitting so far this season and wonder whether or not the Los Angeles Dodgers should consider not letting Shohei Ohtani pitch again once he's healthy enough to and to keep him exclusively as a hitter

Y’all must have forgot what an insane pitcher Ohtani is. 11.4 career K/9, (about the same as Glasnow, who is an absolute stud), career ERA over a half run better than Tyler Glasnow and even a .667 winning percentage for a losing team (yes, wins and losses are pretty irrelevant but it shows how he helps keep even a team that couldn’t provide him run support in games…certainly not to the level the Dodgers could). He’s a threat to win the Cy Young any time he pitches a complete season…he was 4th in 2022 and was a contender last year until he had blister and elbow issues. No way does he not pitch, since he’s arguably the ace of the Dodger’s staff when he pitches. It’s not just “added value”…it’s dominance.

People continue to dismiss his ability because they don't watch him play and baseball is a game that you have to watch a player's every swing or pitch to appreciate (not just looking at stats). For anyone who has actually watch Ohtani playing, we know that Ohtani evolves. He has the ability to change and adjust and so this isn't so much that he is hitting better because he is not pitching. He is hitting better because he is still evolving. Instead of asking if he should quit pitching, I just hope that we get to see Ohtani reaching full potential on both pitching and hitting.

Thank you Ninja for speaking up!!! And Ohtani said it many many times on multiple Japanese TV shows, he always considers himself a pitcher before a hitter. Shohei said he would choose to become a pitcher WITHOUT A DOUBT, because "the game results are way more dependent on pitcher's performance. Of course hitters score, but pitchers can dormant or simply throw the game in a blink. I always want to have more control on the game". As a matter of fact, high school student Shohei met Mr Kuriyama Hideki (former Japanese Ham Fighters GM, and eventually the Japanese National team GM of WBC 2023) who introduced the concept of "2 way player" to him and the rest is history. We all know that Shohei is not a quitter and there's no way he'd throw this original role (pitcher) away. Just let his man play and write his own legacy!

In regards to Ohtani's contract with $680m of it deferred it's only about a $46m a year contract in present day value so that's not too crazy even if he gave up pitching. Also, one factor that is unique to Ohtani is the sponsorship money he brings in as the dodgers have already signed a number of Japanese sponsors because of him. For other players, their salary is only based on their baseball performance mostly, while Ohtani brings in Japanese sponsorship money to the Dodgers too.

Yeah, and if he transitions to an outfield position while still hitting like he's doing, he'll bring even more value than just being a DH. It'll be interesting to see how long he pitches, as I don't think he'll pitch for all 10 years of his contract. As great as he is, I think it's just to much for 10 years. People are obsessed with the war(wins above replacement), which uses a calculation from 2010 that penalizes DH heavily, gives them negative 1.75 war on the season, when recent data should have it as negative 0.93 war for 162 games. Mookie plays shortstop which gets positive 0.45 war, and the fielding he does brings him positive defensive war (0.8 so far).

It also depends on what other pitchers the Dodgers will have on their roster. Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are already locked into the rotation for the long term. They still have a lot of young starting pitchers in Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Bobby Miller, Gavin Stone, and Emmet Sheehan. They are also rumored to be the most probable landing spot for Roki Sasaki. And then there's Ohtani. That's 9 names, all of whom are solid starters, future All-Stars, or established aces. The Dodgers suddenly have *a lot* of viable starting pitchers for the long term, but the problem is that there's not a single lefty among them. Once Kershaw inevitably retires, who are they going to get as the LHP in that rotation? A year ago, we would have said it's Julio Urías, but that's obviously not going to happen now. It's conceivable that the Dodgers will have a six-man rotation that includes Glasnow, Yamamoto, Miller, Ohtani, and Sasaki in the near future, which is terrifying. However, what do they do with the rest of their promising pitching talent, and where do they get a reliable LHP?

I would have him pitching more next yr. Whatever they need to do to get him 30 starts. He’s so good as a pitcher he could win the Cy young. IMO he’s the.l best pitcher in the league. He has elite movement and pitch arsenal and can touch 102 mpg when he needs it. The only reason he hasn’t won is because he doesn’t make enough starts. No hitter no matter how good you are is worth 70 mil per yr. He gets that cuz he does both and if he’s the competitor that I believe he is he will pitch until he physically can’t anymore. Also, as a side note, for those that don’t understand his TJ surgery it’s isn’t what you think. His surgery is more of a reinforment surgery not a reconstructive surgery. His ucl is classified as healthy before his procedure. He had a brace implanted to his ucl and its purpose is to strengthen his ucl. A lot of ppl seem to not understand that and think he’s rehabbing a compete tear. Not even close and when he’s heathy he’s going to have his velocity back and will have more shelf life on his ucl. The Dodgers know this as his surgeon is their team dr. They are not paying him 70 mil for his hitting alone and is expected to be a starting pitcher. Idc what anyone says, Shohei logically is the best pitcher in the league and their isn’t a pitcher you would want over him considering his offense and that he ranks among the best and is potential the best on the mound. elite fast ball and elite movement with all the pitches you can ask for, curve, slider, sweeper, cutter, 102 mph and speed to first like no other.

whether anyone knows it or not, Ohtani is going down the path of a Babe Ruth, but he's going to be forced out of the pitching role, simply because the amount of wear/tear on the elbow is too much, too frequently...this is going to be his 2nd to last Tommy John surgery. because Ohtani's strength is so remarkable, the elbow joint simply won't last long enough for him to play as a pitcher.

And let's be honest, their stats likely will not be this good by the end of the season, especially for Mookie. Playing SS season long is going to wear him down and he will have some down times. Shohei on the other hand, had a slow start (on his standard). He does not have a defense duty and he typically transforms into monster in summer. I think it is safe to bet that Shohei will lead the MVP conversation starting in June.

According to blah blah blah. Give where the credit is due. TBH is Ohtani wasnt asian, they wouldve talked about Hall of Fame many years ago already. And these pundits keep saying 700 mil doesnt realize how much income he is bringing into MLB and Dodgers from internationally. Its miles miles apart from any other players in MLB. Dodgers are getting paid well over 700 mil worth just on advertisement, licensing, broadcasting rights 😂

@surfwriter8461
@surfwriter8461 21 день назад
This is a combination of ignorance, silly bias and loose opinions. Ohtani had a slow start to the season and a couple of mini-slumps but still leads the NL or MLB generally in several categories, while also stealing nine bases so far. Mookie Betts was asked who would be on his MLB Mt Rushmore greatest ever, and he named Shohei as one of the four. Some MLB commentators have said at this time Ohtani is the best hitter in the game. And Ohtani has also said he feels at his best when he's both pitching and hitting. His pitching is elite. So all this idle chatter is kind of insulting. As for the Hall of Fame, he's already earned his own room there. Cut the nonsense about longevity, which doesn't apply to a player who is unique and quite likely the best overall athlete to ever play the game. He's already earned his own room in the HoF.

I hate to see another Bo Jackson situation. Ohtani is too valuable to not have a career that goes into double digits years. If he has another operation on his elbow because he tries to come back as a pitching ace, then we are back to saying what could have been if he had just concentrated on hitting.

NO...Ohtani will want to continue pitching (as long as hes effective) and doing his offensive thing. If asked, he'll tell Dodgers hell no (give up pitching...as we stand right now). As usual, Danettes come across as not ever competing in organized sports (not understanding a player's psyche)

The instability that results from a UCL tear is most evident with extremes of range of motion that overhead throwers subject their elbows to. If the elbow isn't out in that extreme position, the instability isn't symptomatic, kind of like when an athlete with a torn ACL can walk normally and tolerate straight ahead activity, but their knee gives out with cutting/twisting. The swing doesn't stress the elbow nearly as much, especially in the right arm of a left-handed hitter, as in Ohtani and Harper's cases.-Matt Snyder
