Should the Maldives be creating new land?

As climate change leads to sea level rise, low-lying island nations like the Maldives are facing an existential threat. One solution is to 'reclaim' land by relocating sediment from the ocean floor. This can provide more space for development and increase resilience to rising oceans. But many are concerned about the environmental and social impacts of such projects. In this film we explore the process, the impacts and the uncertainties around this race to adapt.

The problem with this sort of land reclamation project is that these geo-engineered lands will have to be supplemented for decades. The tide won't just stop just because sand from the sea-bed has been excavated. Not sure if there is any AI simulation for geo-engineering feats like these as the question of newly reclaimed lands' erosion resistance is a major factor for settlements. And as she pointed-out, there's huge effects on marine life in the area due to this. These changes then affecting the weather and perhaps even the climate. But realistically, when it comes to marine life or human life, human life will obviously be preferred.

Maybe try going Dutch style. Live below sea level, dig out bowls and build dikes from the excavated sediment. Use windpower to pump the seawater out of the bowl. Hope that nature can never overcome your many failure points. Maximize the land usage immediately and monetize monetize monetize

Utilizing Carbon Black or other Carbon Negative (in theory, LCA’s needed etc) material for “Land Reclamation” could be an interesting option. ESPECIALLY in cases where it is related to Sea Level Rise rather than Petrostate Pet Projects etc. Granted production may need to be scaled up, protocols made, and long term studies needed.

Challenge means this! Hopefully, it may become a model, recreating harmony kept over millions of years. Also, the use of land should be well considered, avoiding inharmonious ways.

How does tourism affect this issue as well? More land on the price of nature? These people are nuts. I'll never go there.

On the bright side of things, perhaps acidification, decrease in crucial marine life, decrease of Carbonate ions, will lead to more problems to be tackled such that this type of geo-engineering feat is made sustainable. Decrease in marine food for starters, then perhaps change in surface and sub surface ion concentrations leading to color changes. Atleast, they can then increase their salt-exports by then.

That's really bad idea! Recently I have been learning from resistance group in my country because government are being careless about nature and people protections. sand is so fine and have no cohesion which pose a threat to construction engineering. every hurricane season we suffer the consequences of wrong development, especially those that remove our natural barriers at ours beaches (and others places). specifically, I'm talking about Puerto Rico. take a look how hurricane Maria (category 5) destroyed a lot of properties around the coast and the beaches couldn't be self restored.

Reefs are critical to the biodiversity of our oceans and maintaining wild populations of fish/inverts/etc. You don't want to live on a version of Earth where the ocean is void of marine life, acidic, dirty, and swamped with algae. Growing and propagating saltwater coral and fish is not trivial and the majority of species will be lost.

@@trader2137 Are you really serious? Without corals and mangroves there isn't habitats for sealife. What would people eat? And if you do not care about the nature, then why you would go to place like Maldives in the first place? Go to desert city like Dubai, it is already full of "fancy hotels".
