The Proud Family was revived as a new Disney+ series titled The Proud Family Louder and Prouder. From watching the first episode, it wasn't the worst debut of a show, but it did have some concerns.

Fun fact: Before the Disney Channel picked it up as a series, it was pitched in 1998 as a pilot for Nickelodeon and was planned for a 1999 release. During production in 1999, Nickelodeon decided to pass on the series and didn't plan on releasing it as a TV series. After Nickelodeon passed on it, Disney Channel immediately greenlit the series which premiered in 2001.

My biggest complaint with this reboot is the age discrepancy. The reboot clearly states that Penny has just turned 14 (and LaCienega turns 15 towards the end of season 1), but the original show also had Penny as a newly 14 year old. The reboot obviously takes place after the revival, considering the fact that they use modern/updated technology and pop culture references, but most importantly, BeBe and CeCe have clearly aged a few years. So how can Penny and her friends still be 14/15 when her siblings (and presumably everybody else) have aged up?
@sparxstreak02
@sparxstreak02 Год назад
Exactly! The end of the OG Proud Family had Penny turning 16 & getting her license in The Proud Family Movie - we could’ve continued from there for Penny’s last 2 years of high school. Penny & her later boyfriend Kareem also act much more akin to a couple closer to 16 than 14.

I could talk about how this show feels new, but at the same time keeps it's charm from the original, or how it made no sense to age down the characters, but I want to talk about the animation. When I first saw the trailer, I liked how vibrant the show looked, but the characters felt really stiff and lifeless. But when I watched the show, I completely changed my mind. The characters are still very expressive (especially Oscar) and there are times where the animation can actually look really smooth, like the dancing at the end of episode 4.

If a man had told his wife that since she didn't make money, she had to do whatever he told her, that would be quickly called sexist. Why is it treated differently with the genders flipped?
@ceebbees12345
@ceebbees12345 Год назад
Because she's running a business and he isn't, I guess? It's still a pretty bad way to portray a character right at the start. She just seems like she's gonna be playing with her business and ignoring her family, which is a pretty awful thing to do that older movies have criticized fathers over in the past. Even worse thing to do to the Proud Family. That's a touchy subject though, since some families just can't afford to have both or either parents there all the time, they make do somehow, but still. She's there. And in front of the kids saying she's too busy for them. Of course, I also think I'm taking the moment too seriously, I haven't even watched the show. Plus, he could have changed that diaper without running to his wife and telling her to change it.

As someone who watched the original Proud Family I can say this show is enjoyable but there are times where I cringe and times (like the twins being bullied for having gay parents) which sometimes feels forced. Another thing I hate is how they shit on Penny for no reason (like she literally does nothing wrong but is depicted as the bad guy) and how much more they made Oscar unlikable as a character. Other than that, the show is decent.

They put gay and Trans people in the spotlight to make it look cool and the thing to do. Being gay is fine and all but don't shove it down the kids throats. Well you miss a lot by not being familiar with the original series. Michael was always feminine and his dad is the football coach, there was a whole episode about him being called a sissy. So when he shows up in the new series being himself, that's just the payoff. Also, this is a cultural thing, but when Maya says Penny is "superficial" she means that she feels like she's unaware. (Edit to add: Maya is superficially pro Black, she's judging Penny for presumably not being as Black as she is) In every scene Maya is carrying an influencial book by a Black author, is she judgemental? Yes. But Penny's activism tends to start and stop with what immediately effects her. That's what Maya's beef was

TBH the show really leans too far with her at times that its isn't even satire and I genuinely believe they think making a character super woke is "endearing". Like during the friend conference about the dresses....Maya pulling up a literal "Woke Fashion" magazine. I nearly receding into my ass with the 2nd hand cringe. The fact THEY HAD to name it that lol. Like seriously, if her fashion magazine was more on the black-beauty side of things or black-female-pride, I would have been okay with that since that's within character and its something that would be feasible. But a literal "Woke magazine" Good lord XD. Its the show basically equating "black empowered female" = "Woke" which everyone knows woke is basically the buzzword that we all like to avoid using cuz of its mainly negative connotations. And yet the show just uses it thinking its positive. Reason is, I do believe the writers are tonally deaf towards certain things and with how they write their characters. Look at the homeless sub-teacher ep....the previews had the VA and writers hype up the episode and say how much of a good character the sub was and how there's a lesson to learn from it, yada yada. But then you actually watch the episode and go "WTF?!" her getting a new home was so unearned, as fucked as that sounds XD. The message was "You can be as nasty and bitchy as you want to be and you'll still get a handout cuz someone out there will pity you" Like she had NO character development at all lol. The fact that she had the audacity to act like a tyrant at Penny's house after her dang parents opened it up to her, and the show passes it off as "a deserved moment" shows they really don't know much about writing characters in some degrees. Like nah, check your attitude cuz my parents ain't charging you rent. If you can't compose yourself and not act like a complete bossy-britches then stay in your dang run-down car w/microwave XD.

I find it a pretty good reboot, BUT I have major complaints at the same time! *This show had the nerve to take away Oscar’s character development from the movie about giving Penny freedom, that’s bad enough but they make him commit crimes too?! That just crosses too many lines for me! How dare they not make Oscar a better person! *LaCienga hasn’t changed either! They’ve made her even worst! She kicks Penny out of her own group, and clearly has not learned anything at all about being a better person! Penny deserves real friends who won’t stab her in the back constantly like LaCienga does! *I’m glad Dijonay is starting to be a better friend to Penny then she was in in the original show, but it’s that she didn’t move on from being an obnoxious love chaser and she keeps getting people in trouble by posting on her phone. I’ll get over this if there’s ever an episode where Penny has enough of Dijonay outing people like this *My biggest complaint however is the finale! Suga Mama already has her background story in the original show! How she met her husband and how her parents favored her sister over her. I am so mad that they retconned it all like that! We don’t need a new story, especially not one that ruins the story we already have! But overall I find the reboot pretty decent, but they could certain things better (like maybe bring back the Chang Triplets and give them more individuality)

I honestly take some issue with Michael. It seems like the "non-conforming" character always has to be the one to be used to push the envelope for current day standards even if it's at the cost of characterization. Back in the original series he was clearly into fashion, choreography, and non-masculine stuff and had to deal with bullying over it, but was still otherwise a normal kid with an implied crush on Lacieniga. I'm glad he became who he wants to be, but the reboot tries too hard with making him say "boo" and "honey" all the time. They even replaced his silly, comedic personality with sassy sarcasm. I'm not saying gay men like this don't exist, I'm just saying that it's not Micheal. Let him do other things, develop him more, they don't have to make him as "flashy as possible" to make sure the hundredth time that the audience got his sexuality. The Proud Family is a disgrace to the original, they rebooted the entire thing instead of being a sequel series. Penny is 14 again despite turning 16 in the Proud Family movie, not only that but she's still in middle school when she should be in high school by that point.
@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343
Oh it’s definitely louder. Unfortunately without much substance behind what it’s trying to say. While the original was not flawless and had its problems, when it came to serious topics like sexism, hypersexualization of minors, abuse, racism and xenophobia, it had some of the most powerful or meaningful episodes in any kid’s show. Now every time they try to tackle a serious issue, it literally feels as subtle as a canonball to the face.

Like we REALLY needed a short Maya backstory lol. Like we the viewers are piecing together the rollercoaster of her emotions, but it all happens literally in a single ep. Like oh yeah, she all of the sudden likes Penny because she defended her? This implies that she assumed Penny wouldn't defend her in the first place over having 2 dads. Which implies this similar situation happened in the past to warrant her disdain towards "Fake people" Yet we never get it. Like I feel like we could have done without that whole gross-sisters scene and instead switch it to Penny seeing Maya alone at a mall. She runs into old friends and its clear that there's an awkward beef between the 2. Penny overhears the ex-friend saying something like "Oh, you still living with your 2 dads?" Maya gets defensive, and the ex-friends laugh and go away. Penny steps in and defends Maya. Taken aback, Maya mentions how she used to be friends with her, a nice girl. Until she and her brother were adopted (they didn't say when they were adopted so for the hell of it, lets say recently, hence the whole moving part so her dads can have a house large enough for 2 kids), then her best friend at her old school had an issue with that and stopped talking to her. Penny assures her she would never do anything like that. Maya can tell she's telling the truth so then she invites Penny & friends to her place for the Gumbo since she realizes she basically shut herself out to other people. THAT would have been more believable than. Ep 1: I hate Penny Ep 2: I hate Penny Ep 3 (not sure if this is her ep or ep 4): I hate Penny *insert Penny telling her she's an ally and unintentionally triggering her about not having birth parents* I hate Penny *Insert Penny again telling her she's an ally* I'm cool with Penny* .....The heck? I'm really not a fan of this revival compared to the original but I think a lot of my disdain came from this first episode and carried onward. The plot with LaCienega just hit a lot of my own trauma and turmoil from when I was a teenage girl and I was really expecting them to NOT just do the "ew disgusting a woman with facial hair" plot that every other show does. I expect better from this series and thought it would be a good storyline for young girls about how what you perceive to be superficial flaws can be mended if you so choose but it's okay to just be who you are and learn to cope with it. But no. Turned into a really stupid gag and everyone making fun of her and then the hair being removed and all of a sudden she was 'pretty' again. It's 2022. This kind of crap in media is one of the prominent factors in why young girls and women struggle so hard with body image beyond just the typical weight scrutiny we're all under. I hope they improve with time and better their messages because this just ain't it for younger audiences or those of us who grew up with the show.

It just seems this show is for pushing the main worldly agenda rather than discussing what teenagers actually go through when growing up in America, such as bullying, etc. Now, it's like watching a cartoon adult show, and it contains a lot of content I would NOT have consumed had it been in the first one { which is WAAAAAY better than the reboot }. See this was an interesting review from the perspective of someone who hasn't seen the original show. As someone who has seen the original show, I personally really enjoyed the first episode and didn't have many issues with it, but that's just because I got alot of joy from seeing these old characters in a new enhanced setting. Plus as far as they style itself goes, honestly yeah first round go it's hard to get used to but once you do you can really come to appreciate it. From your outsider perspective though, it's interesting to see the issues the episode was and how sort of overwhelming it felt as a new viewer of the proud family. Cause you just have all these characters shoved in and you aren't really sure who they are and how they're supposed to bounce off each other. Either way this was a neat video and it's interesting to hear about the episode from another perspective. (Also to hear you say you like Dijonay made me laugh, she's the worst man. Michael on the other hand, deffo favorite among the cast)

I admit to watching this show growing up, but I will state that it was...okay. I was more into Cartoon Network. Ed Edd n Eddy was my favorite show, followed by Grim Adventures. If nothing was on there, I'd turn to Nickelodeon. If nothing was on there, I'd turn to Disney. Even so, there were still shows I preferred to Proud Family. Most of all was Dave the Barbarian. I like fantasy. I like the humor. And my name is Dave. The main reason I even bothered watching Proud Family was that I was just beginning puberty and the main characters were girls. Really, that's it. Watching the show today, I see it as being rather corny and a bit bland. I can understand why certain people enjoyed it, but for me, it was an "If nothing better was on" type of show. I mean, let's face it. Cartoons that are meant to teach kids lessons or values are known for being dull. Save for a few exceptions. And to be honest, if someone listed as their favorite shows the same ones I listed, or ones with a similar (or weirder) type of humor, I doubt Proud Family would be on top of their list. Though, I will say that I'm not thrilled with the new show. The old one was bland, but involved positive (if not simplistic) lessons and encounters with real social issues. The current show is turning out to be very woke and ideologically based. Even to the point where it's willing to forget the positive lessons from the previous show. For example, in an episode where a celebrity boy comes to school some time before a dance, all the girls fawn over him. He asks out Zoey, the nerdy white girl. The other girls begin saying that "He only dates white girls", and end up bullying and gaslighting their friend into giving up a great opportunity. The guy doesn't even get to speak for himself. Throughout the episode, the girls bully their friend and start a vicious rumor, and the episode doesn't call them out on it. It just uses "Colorism" as an excuse. I won't lie and say the show isn't more entertaining. But it has definitely become toxic. I mean, the original writers can do what they want with their own show, but it makes me think they're jerks.

Give the fact that you came into this without any prior knowledge of TPF you did an excellent job! Unbiased, yet honest about a few flaws but all in all I was surprised that a younger white male came to the conclusions you did. I'm 37 and a kid at heart (obviously, I'm watching a Proud Family review 😂) I'm just so relieved that your generation is light-years ahead of ours and generations prior. It makes me happy to know that the ones of my daughters generation (13) are so much more understanding and willing to even watch a cartoon with a predominantly black cast and give it "FAIR" criticism (I tend to agree with 90%of your take) I'm just appreciative because there are so many ways you could have went and trashed it because you didn't relate or have any nostalgic ties to the show.
