The story mentioned with the real-time instructions is Manna by Marshall Brain. It is available for free online for his website and takes well under an hour to read. I highly recommend it; it is a fun read and also quite thought-provoking and prescient (was written in '03). I first encountered it a decade ago and I'm about to start reading it for the third time now right as soon as I hit "comment".

Our mortgages are always fixed, it's up to you to choose for how long the interest is fixed. 3 years, 5, 10, and if you're lucky, it can be the entire mortgage lifetime. But yeah, many speculators went on shorter fixes becauss they deemed 1% interest too high. Just incredible

yo, law student here. the general consensus is that ai only really disrupts the onboarding process at law firms, intake bullshit. while an ai could parse through documents, lawyers are a skeptical bunch and prefer a pair of human eyes. almost every judge i’ve spoken to also immediately knows when someone uses ai to draft their remarks or an opinion too, so i don’t think that’s an angle to be concerned about either. for now, ai isn’t smart enough to really fuck with the field too much, but it could definitely make some things less tedious

Struggle cultivates culture. I am not going to say that the current situation is perfect but stagnation can be scarier. I very much doubt a world free from 8 hour workdays would instead lead to a world full of more artistic expression and meaning. People often find purpose in being able to provide to society and their community. It's not really a preventable situation at this point so we'll see how it plays out but I do not think it will be good for the average person's mental health.

@@BarginsGalore AI by definition (in the context where it's contrasted with AGI) cannot perform complex, novel problem solving. Face it with a problem it cannot _directly_ translate into a problem it learned the answer for during training, and it will perform terribly. And that's the point. _Problem_ _solvers_ will always be in need before AGI -- which, much like humans, can solve novel problems -- comes. Programmers will have the easiest time transitioning into these kinds of positions, since their bachelor's literally consists mostly of algoritm theory (solutions to problems, in layman's terms). They will be working _with_ AI, but they won't get replaced by it. Of course, if a person is in the industry just for the money, with no passion for problem solving itself, they might get replaced even by AI.

I think, genuinely, that AI learning models will be trained off the work of corporate ghost writers who are basically shackled to a desk nine to five producing corpo literature that is copyright free because the wagie-author is hammering it out 10k words a day like fanfic authors do. It’s gonna create an industry that degrades authors even further than the smutfic niche market already does. It’s gonna suck for artists, and it’s gonna start with authors. There will be no indie authors anymore, just software as a service ebook apps that autogenerate stories based off the subscribers prompts and then reads them off using AI voices of human voice actor wagies. Our creativity is literally going to be bottled for corporate profits. It’s not hard, AI is already doing it, it just needs visionary corporate oversight to really tighten the screws and make artists scream like that machine in monsters inc. Art is so dead, it’s gonna be industrialized past any point of return.
